Remarks: 

It’s a rare opportunity these days for us to handle a vintage Minimoog, so not a clone or re-issue but the real deal, and we are very pleased to be able to offer this late production version of vintage Minimoog (serial number 11549). 

Background:

Our client purchased this Minimoog new from a music retailer in Carlisle on 28th January 1980 – we have the original sales receipt, although will not publish this as it contains personal data, but it will be provided to the buyer of this Moog. The provenance is therefore perfect for this 43+ year old Minimoog, and the serial number being #11549 places it towards the end the production runs from Moog, so offered the final evolution in terms of the architecture. 

Our client had assembled a modest & much valued vintage synth collection over the years, all of which we have the honour for selling for him as he has made the difficult decision to let these instruments pass to new owners. The Minimoog has been cherished, played & enjoyed only ever at home, during his 43 years of ownership.

Servicing:

As mentioned in the introduction, this Minimoog went through a complete professional service by Jim McKenna Singing Cat Services in May 2023, as part of the pre-sale diligence in getting it ready for sale and in top operational condition for the new owner. Condition:

You can decide by looking at the pictures below on how to measure this but we’d rate it as a very good all original survivor machine, so no overt restoration to the wood cabinet and all original controls with no modifications. As we are moving towards half a century on the age of many of these vintage Minimoog, the value of them being completely factory stock would have more appeal that highly restored examples.

The cabinet has a lovely aged patina and the main control surfaces are all in superb condition. There is an insert missing from one of the control knobs on the VCO 3 Waveform,  and some of the other knobs inserts have oxidised a little, but new replacement parts can still be easily purchased on line should you wish t address these minor blemishes. The aluminium chassis and surround are all in great shape, and all look perfectly in keeping for an original Moog synthesizer from the late 1970s.

Dud to its age and originality, we feel these vintage instruments should not be over restored, but if you prefer to have the wood cabinet fully refurbished then please contact us about this as we can get a quotation from Kent at KSR to have this carried out.  The treatments to the cabinet usually require the original varnish and stain to be removed, the wood rubbed down to remove as much of the signs of wear, and then restrained and waxed to finish. The results are very good, beautiful, but not everybody likes this kind of restoration anymore, so let us know if this is something you would like to consider and we’ll gather a quote.

You may notice from the photos that one of the waveform selector knobs is missing its silver insert, this came out recently and wasn’t available to us at time of photographing the Moog for this sales listing. We do have a new replacement knob for this, so it will be fitted to the Minimoog at point of sale, with no charge of course.

Health-Check:

As this Minimoog was recently serviced in May this year, the synth does not need any further attention, but as part of our post-sale process, we will ask Kent Spong at KSR to carry out a health-check on the Moog once the sale has completed.  This will add a couple of weeks to the post-sale timeline.

This Minimoog can run either EU220V or US110V (switchable) and has a UK type plug fitted to the power chord.

Remarks: This Roland Juno 60, JSQ-60 and Boss KM-60 were purchased by our client brand new (from our Client’s memory) around 1983 from a music shop based in Chelmsford, and all three items have only ever been used in the home.  The cosmetic condition is outstanding for all three machines, pristine and almost (if not) as-new condition. These are usable vintage instruments, so they have intrinsic value as such but the condition of this collection more than qualifies as something a collector would cherish.

We are going to try and sell this collection as a bundle for two reasons; 

Firstly as they were all bought together and have been used together for 40 years, so it would be ideal to not split them up if possible.

Secondly, as these actually all make excellent partners in terms of operating and mixing, especially with that stunning condition analogue keyboard mixer, the KM-60

The Juno 60

The design of the Juno 60 has to be one of the best Roland ever produced in terms of simplicity of sound design and warmth of character. The Juno 60 has been a ‘go-to’ synth for working musicians wanting that vintage sound for quite a while now.  It kind of defies logic that a DCO synth could deliver such a lush and musical tone, and it won the hearts and minds of all synthesists who’d had the opportunity to own or play one. 

This is, we feel, the cleanest all original example we have had through our business, with the buttons and keys so clean and white, it’s like looking at a brand new machine. Included in the sale is the original Roland Patch Program Data Cassette and owner’s manual.

This synth sounds and operates like all Juno 60 should, and KSR has fully serviced the synth, so it’s 100% working perfectly and good to go.  Aside from the DCB Port, there is no modern MIDI retrofit to this example, but as it’s in such beautiful original condition it would be such a shame to drill holes into the pristine metal panel.  Kenton still produces a Pro-DCB MIDI converter, so we would recommend going this route to maintain the originality for MIDI functionality, but if you must have a more sophisticated MIDI access then please call and speak to us about what options are available and costs etc.

The price has been agreed with our client to reflect the outstanding condition as we both recognise this to be a vastly superior quality example to what most people are trying to sell online around the world. 

The Juno JSQ-60

This was Roland’s solution to a dedicated polyphonic sequencer for the Juno 60, which connects via the proprietary DCB port on the synth from a Roland sequencer. A useful 2000-step unit that’s simple to use and an effective partner for its time.

As you can see from the photos, the unit comes still contained within its original EO retail packaging. The cosmetic condition is excellent with only tiny areas showing any imperfections, and we have provided some photos below that show all angles of the sequencer so you can get a feel for it’s overall quality.

KSR has fully serviced the synth, so it’s 100% working perfectly and good to go, and we have purchased a brand new 9V DC 1A external power supply (UK model) for this, which is included in the price.

The Boss KM-60 6-Channel Analogue Mixer

A very well-known and sought-after analogue mixer that Boss produced in the late 1970s. It’s a stereo 6-channel machine that offers onboard EQ, effects send and panning,  some lovely VU-meters and a beautiful aesthetic that fits perfectly with the Juno-60 and JSQ-60.  There’s a lot of love for this little mixer, we used to own one back in the day so know it well and have fond memories of our ownership. Certainly, you can buy a lot more ‘mixer’ these days, but period-correct equipment has a unique appeal and the KM-60, especially in this condition, is very much collectable and only set to become more desirable as the years go by.

As you can see from the pictures, it’s is fantastic cosmetic condition with only the smallest evidence that tells you this mixer is over 40 years old.

KSR have fully serviced the mixer, cleaned all the potentiometers and jack-sockets and re-capped the PSU, so it’s 100% working perfectly.  We all know that mixers impart a lot of character to the tone of the instruments used through them, and the KM-60 was produced with the Roland product set being sold at that time in mind, so the Juno-60 is the perfect partner for it. Its a trackable mixer but this example has never been used that was so is completely unblemished…stunning.

In Summary:

The Juno 60, JSQ-60 and KM-60 are all sold through RL Music with a 3-month warranty and operate on EU/UK 220v~240v. 

Our client, the owner, also provided original printed copies of the Juno-60 Owners Manual and the JSQ-60 Owners Manual, although the latter shows some historic water damage to the paper. 

The Juno-60 and KM-60 use a hard-wired flex that terminates to a UK-style 3-pin plug. They are able to operate within the EU without any external power-regulation transformers, although your own country-type plug would need to be fitted. The JSQ-60 operated from a brand new 9V DC 1A external power supply (UK plug-type version).

Remarks: A good all original condition Yamaha DX-1, which we have previously sold to the current owner but they are now Brokering it back through us for re-sale.

What is there to say on this 1983 flagship synthesizer that has not already been written, but it’s a very rare machine with only 140 reported to have ever been manufactured, so a really unique find in 2023. Classic Gear -The Yamaha DX1: Owning and Recreating the King of FM

We are not affiliated, nor have we contributed or edited any of the information provided in the link above, so this is an independent source for the DX-1 which we hope you find of interest.

Cosmetic Condition:

The overall condition of this example is very good, with the normal amount of wear we would expect to see on a synth this age, size and quality. We sold this DX-1 to our EU customer, so it was shipped out of the UK against the original sale and then was re-imported in May this year, having been sent straight to Kent Spong at KSR for some servicing, where the instrument currently resides. 

The photos below were taken at KSR, so are un-doctored and show the overall presentation.

Operational Condition:

The following declaration is made in good faith and is an honest account of the current operational condition of this example.  

All the controls, LEDs, functions of the control panel work as they should, so LED buttons are all operational.  However,  Bank A Voice 5 button feels slightly different to operate than the others which suggests the component is faulty, but it does function, although it can be intermittent. We are not aware of a replacement for this part as it would appear to be a DX-1 specific component but we are declaring this as a known issue.

The LDC display is fully working with all segments showing properly and brightness is perfectly readable.  The volume LED indicator on the right hand side, next to where to says ‘DX-1  ’ on the front panel has one of the tiny LED segments that is dimmer than all the rest (the 14db) and one that does not work (the 96 db) – I’ve attached a photo I took when we had it set up in the workshop .

The sliders top the right of the instrument all work correctly.

The modulation and pitch-wheel both operate correctly.

The DX- sound engine itself operates correctly.  There are some classic ‘DX’ patches loaded in the system, I did try to edit some sounds and all the edit functions were available are working, although I didn’t save those changes.

The professional weighted 73 note wood keyboard was fully working in terms of triggering notes, and the velocity was 100% working across all keys.

The Polyphonic After-Touch (Poly-AT) is not operating at more than 30% of the keyboard. Kent has gone though each key to check the after-touch sensors and there are many that simply are not working.  Kent at KSR does not currently have any supply for replacements, so this is not something Kent has a resolution for, but the owner is aware and this is factored into the sale price.

In consulting with Kent at KSR on the reality on getting the Poly-AT system fully restored, as I know this would be of interest to any potential buyer,  Kent told me that every DX-1 he had seen had similar issues as there are no replacement parts for the Poly-AT sensors at present.  He said that in the last 6 years he had serviced two DX-1 owned by MI professionals, and both those machines also had significant Poly-AT sensor failures, so it would seem to be consistent with the age of these machines.  I personally would be very suspicious of anyone selling a DX-1 stating that the Poly-AT system was 100% based on this reality.

Summary:

We have seen people advertising the Yamaha DX-1 from £60,000 to nearly £150,000 GBP in recent years, which is eye-watering, but with such a small production run plus is being such an historic instrument with A-list users like Dire Straits and Michael Jackson et al, it’s not hard to understand why people might value them this high.  With the declared operational condition of this particular DX-1 in mind, we have agreed with our Client, the owner, to price this example much more realistically. The price below is not subject to VAT in the UK as this is a commission sale but it might be subject to import duties in your own country, if you are purchasing outside the UK.

This DX-1 has multiple power settings so it’s able to operate in any country around the world without he need for any external power-supplies to step-up or down. We will also supply  a PDF copy of the owners manual.

Remarks: A beautiful condition Roland Jupiter 8 (12bit model) – Serial Number: 161512, which has been retrofitted with a Groove MIDI kit.

We are always very happy to sell any Jupiter 8 and this one is an excellent representative example that has MIDI as well. What can we say that hasn’t already been written about the JP8…honestly, nothing new.  However, we’ve seen relative values for this flagship vintage analogy poly-synth climb sharply in recent years, so they’ve become unaffordable to most people, which is a real shame.

The overall condition is excellent, with far less than he normal amount of wear we would expect to see on a synth this age, so this example has been very well cared for throughout its existence. The photos below tell the story, but even the base of this JP8 is in great shape.

We discussed the price at some length with our client and agreed keep the sale price as reasonable as is possible for this model, so we think you will find this cheaper by far than any currently available JP8 for sale in the world right now, in comparable condition, with MIDI, fully serviced and sold with a guarantee. 

Our client purchased a Stardust (pictured) cover for the synth to keep it well protected, so this is supplied in the sale.

Remarks: Much has been written on these incredible synthesizers and it’s understandable when you use them as they really can deliver a thick analogue wall of sound, and are perfect pad and brass sources just for starters.

The Xpander lineage includes the Matrix 6 and 12 and is a fully midi configured, 6 voice Polysynth – an excellent addition to any analogue set-up and has to be heard to be believed. he Xpander offers a deep programmable architecture for those of you into tweaking but can also be a very user-friendly hands-on preset machine.  This means they sit between that digital and analogue medium perfectly and are arguably the best of the hybrid technology of the early to mid-1980s.

This example is a USA built unit that works perfectly, and as mentioned above, has just been fully serviced by KSR.  The cosmetic condition is excellent, as you can see from the pictures below, with only minimal wear and marks to the painted surfaces.

This Oberheim Xpander has come to us from a private owner who purchased this from new in 1986, so it’s a single owner machine. 

The Xpander runs on US115~230V (switchable), is supplied with an IEC cable with UK-plug fitted and photocopy of the June 1984 user manual by Daniel Soferan. In addition, an original factory presets cassette is also supplied.

Remarks: The classic rack polysynth combo is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the best sounding vintage analogue rack-synths ever.

The MKS-80 Super Jupiter is powerful velocity and pressure sensitive 8 voice/16 VCO analogue polysynth with that big vintage Roland sound, and a stack of modulation and editing facilities.  The accompanying MPG80 controller is an essential piece of kit if you want to really dig down into the programming and open up the synth’s capabilities, and is a joy to use.

This unit (Serial #633634) is the much sought after Rev.5 version of the MKS-80 (see PCB picture below) featuring the Roland IR3R03 VCO and VCF/VCA IR3R05 chipset, amongst other architectural differences to the earlier versions.  Many say the Rev.5 comes closest to sounding like the Jupiter 8, but we’ll leave that debate to the internet to continue.

The cosmetic condition of this MKS-80 is outstanding, with only very light markings in evidence that this rack-synth has been very well looked after by our Client, whom has owned this instrument around 22 years, and only ever used in his home.

The MKS-80 work perfectly and contains many of their original patches, and they’re simple to set up in your studio and get to work with straight out of the box.

Remarks: We are delighted to offer this superb condition example Yamaha CS-60, which is supplied with its original lid, legs and expression & sustain pedals.

The CS-60 is an 8 x VCO – 8 note true polyphonic synth with essentially the same panel layout and identical sound engine as the flagship CS-80, including aftertouch (mono). Also, this model offers user-programmable sounds/storage, which might not sound much of a big deal in 2023, but in 1978 that was a key selling point and something the cheaper CS-50 didn’t offer.

As mentioned above, this CS-60 (serial #1237) was fully serviced by master CS Series technician; Kent Spong at KSR in December 2022, so it is 100% fully operational. The cosmetic condition of the front panel is excellent, and Tolex covering in very good shape overall with some light wear but no damage/tears, and the metal catches and hinges are all present, although the chrome does show patina. This CS-60 is complete as it comes with its original lid, legs, expression and sustain pedals and bag.

This example is factory stock in terms of specification, so no modifications have been implemented. Kenton is still producing a MIDI retrofit kit for this model.  If you would like to have MIDI fitted, please speak to us about your requirements when you enquire, and we will provide the costs for the supply of the kit and installation by Kent at KSR.

Quite remarkably, our client purchased this CS-60 new from the London Synth Centre in 1978, and it’s only ever been used at home.  This exceptional provenance can be documented as a signed letter should the buyer of this synth wish to have that as proof.  This does add intrinsic value as a single-owner machine is such a rare occurrence for a 45 year old instrument.

Remarks: We are delighted to offer this excellent condition example Yamaha CS50, which is supplied with its original lid.

The Yamaha CS series polysynths have a beautifully characterful and distinctive sound that is unique. The CS50 has essentially the same panel layout and sound engine that CS-60 and CS-80 use, including aftertouch (mono). Remarks: The demand for high-quality examples of the world’s most famous drum machine never relents, so we were delighted to be able to offer this good condition TR-808 with MIDI.

Our client has owned this TR-808 since 2018, having purchased it then from a reputable UK vintage synth dealer, so it had been fully serviced and prepared for sale at that time, and the dealer also fitted a MIDI-in modification for our client, through the TR-808 Din-Sync socket at back of the unit, although the switch next to the socket still provides the option to just use the Din-Sync if preferred. 

Our client purchased the Stardust cover, so this is supplied in the sale.

The TR-808 is fully operational of course and looking at the cosmetic presentation, it’s in very good overall condition, fully intact, although showing a patina to the painted finish surfaces, which is consistent with many other 40+ years old TR-808s the we have seen.  The pictures below show you the drum-machine from all angles, so you can asses it for yourself, but it’s a solid working example that would suit regular studio use.

Remarks: The TR909 is simply a classic sounding analogue drum machine and used by a huge array of top artists with thousands of reviews on-line so we’re not going to tell you anything new here. Most professional musicians we know have at least 2 or even 3 of these machines and they usually get very heavy studio and live use which is a testament to the rugged, stable and reliable design from Roland in the mid 80s.

Our client has owned this TR-909 since 2018, having purchased it from a reputable synth dealer in Japan, so it had been fully serviced prior to shipping.  Kent at KSR has just given the TR-909 a full health check, including fitting new batteries, so it’s all ready for its new owner.

Remarks: The CR78 has to be one of the most distinctive drum machines ever made, and has been used by used by artist such as: Brian Ferry, Gary Numan, 808 State, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates, Ultravox etc. 

Our client has owned this CR78 since mid-2019, having purchased it from a private seller in Belgium, whom had owned it from new. Kent at KSR has just given the CR78 a full health check, so it’s all ready for its new owner.

This CR78 is fully operational, does not have any modifications and the cosmetic presentation is excellent aside some tiny marks to the faux wood cabinet (see pictures below).

Included in the sale is also a Future Retro Swynx unit (pictured below), a sync box that converts MIDI signals into MIDI clock, DinSync24, CR-78 clock and analog clock.  Our client has supplied to us the Swynx and its external UK (220~240V) 3-pin type power-supply but no cables.

Restoration Status: A full restoration was carried out in 2017.

Remarks: We have a remarkable opportunity for you to own a true one-off example of what is considered to be one of the finest vintage synths ever made – the Arp 2600, but with a lot of extra added value.

Standard Arp 2600 features: Semi-normalised – 3 VCOs (4027=1), 4 pole Lowpass VCF (4012), VCA, Ring Modulator, 2 EGs, sample & hold Noise, Mic Preamp, Spring Reverb, Voltage Processor and Four Octave Keyboard….the list goes on. This is an Arp 2600 (2600P V3.0). There is no Keyboard controller included with this sale.

What is different about this Arp 2600?

Wood Cabinet: As you can see from the pictures below, our client decided to have a custom Walnut cabinet made (by Lamond Design) in 2017 for the synth, replacing the original plywood/tolexed case. the cabinet was hand-made by Ross Lamond and finished (stained and waxed) by Kent Spong at KSR post-build. The results are sublime, and as far as we know, this is unique…stunning! All the metal hardware was also replaced with the black anodised fittings to the case. KSR spent 4 days carrying out this highly skilled work in 2017.

Metal Control Panel: The main control panel has been stripped, repainted and screen printed to produce an ‘as new’ finish. This is expensive and very time-consuming work and the panel restoration was completed at the end of 2017. KSR had to strip down the Arp completely so the panel could be sent away for the cosmetic treatment, so the synth has been fully rebuilt by KSR and serviced – around 50 hours work in total (not including the cabinet refinishing work).

Modifications by CMS (Phil Cirocco): Our client commission CMS in the USA to carry out some mods on this Arp 2600, so here is a list of what’s been done to this synth:
>Variable octave switches and pot for all 3 VCOs, range of 2 octaves
>Sync switches 2-3, 3
>17″ reverb tank upgrade
>1/4″ input and outputs (main in/outs)
>Upgraded PSU – running EU 220V
>All sliders were chemically cleaned and lubricated, VCO trimmers replaced

The original owner had invested thousands of pounds on having this Arp 2600 prepared to such a high standard and it certainly stands out as a unique and stunningly beautiful example. The sales price does reflect the investment made and quality of the finish, the technical preparation by two of the industries leading vintage synth specialists.

Brokering Status:

We sold this custom Arp 2600 to its current owner in 2018, and the synth now resides with them in Finland, so it’s located within the EU boarders.  The owner has verified that the instrument is 100% fully operational and in the same condition as when we sold it.  To save potential EU buyers form the complexity and additional  VAT burden of buying this item from RL Music in the UK, we have decided to not to import it back here but to sell it from our client in Finland.  This means that we are not able to sell the Arp with a warranty, so it is sold in ‘as-is’ condition, but it is available to demo upon request.

This custom rebuilt Arp 2600 operates on EU 220V. Included in the sale is proprietary Arp power-cable, and we will also include a PDF copy of the user manual.

Remarks: 

Around 1981, The Gnat Special was produced by Wasp Synthesisers Ltd, a business Adrian Wagner set up in competition with EDP Ltd, when he left them as managing director.  This is an extremely limited run machine, and we have never seen one before, so likely one of the rarest synths ever produced.  

This Gnat Special’s origins are clearly derived from the Wasp Deluxe, but it’s a cut-down version of that! So a very basic synth with no internal speaker, but it down has an unbuilt transformer so can operate straight from the UK Mains (220~240V).

This is clearly a collectors instrument, and considering we are also selling the Wasp Deluxe & Spider at the moment, would make a beautiful collection to own, and we doubt many, if anyone, could match this set.

Background:

Our client was a teenager in 1981, and her father purchased this Gnat Special for her (a really cool dad!).  She admitted to us that this synth had little if any appeal to her teenage life at the time, so it was put away in a cupboard and has resided there for pretty much 41 years.

The little Gnat was in need of some attention when our client approached us about Brokering it, so she commissioned KSR to carry out a full service on the synth, so it’s all 100% fully working.

Condition:

The cosmetic condition is excellent, and please check out our photos to verify that. The build quality is not Moog, so think hand-made British boutique on a budget, and you get a feel for the construction, but it’s in amazing original condition.

Remarks: 

A rare opportunity to buy the instrument that Vangelis made his own and is largely recognised as the finest analogue polysynth ever produced, the Yamaha CS-80.

Background:

This CS80 we are offering for sale comes to us for Brokering from a private owner who had sent the instrument to KSR directly for a full service to ensure it’s fully operational and ready for us to sell for them.  The serial number (#1107) tells us this is an earlier production version, so will date back to around 1978.  

Kent at KSR told us that he had this actual CS-80 in for a full operational refurbishment several years ago, so it’s had all the critical updates done for stability and longevity.  The service that’s just been carried out has mainly focussed on calibrations and a replacement Key-Assigner IC.  We fully tested the CS-80 at the KSR workshop on 11th August and can attest to it being 100% perfectly working – it’s got a lovely tone, with it being an earlier production model.

Most CS-80 have lost their ‘pedals, music stand and legs’ over the years, so we cannot supply these original accessories to the new owner, and like so many, this example for sale does not have most of these either, although it is supplied with a Yamaha branded sustain pedal (pictured).  This CS-80 does not have its original lid either. It will come supplies with an original Yamaha CS-80 service manual, which is actually a folder full of original schematics.  Lastly, the current owner has included an historic bill of sale that’s survived with this instrument dated from 1988, which rather amusingly priced the CS-80 at £325, so a nice piece of provenance at least.

If MIDI is required on the CS-80, then we can normally supply and install the Kenton Midi retrofit Kits for an additional charge, so please ask us for a quote to supply and install this for you. Please note that any modifications like fitting MIDI are only carried out after the synth has been purchased in full.

This CS-80 operates on EU220V but can be converted to US110V if required by Kent at KSR (subject to quotation).

Condition:

The overall cosmetic condition of this CS-80 is good, but it does show signs of wear to the control surfaces and tolex, as we would expect from a 44-year-old instrument, and we hope the pictures we have provided with this listing give you a good feel for how it presents.  Most importantly, it’s working perfectly, so it would serve as a superb studio machine, and because of the world-renowned skills of Kent at KSR with this model, he’s able to ‘dial in’ the tuning of the VCO to work optimally for this specific machine.  This CS-80 has not had any modifications done to it, so it’s a completely original example.

With Kent’s agreement, we took a picture of him with the CS-80.  As many of you will know, Kent Spong is recognised worldwide as one of the top CS-80 specialist technicians, so you could not have a more qualified person to set up this synth and support it.  Just Google ‘Kent Spong and CS-80’, and you will see that his reputation is well deserved where the CS-80 is concerned, and of course, just about any make and model of vintage synth.

Warranty provided on this CS80:

The CS80 is sold with a 3-month warranty as standard, which covers all parts and labour and telephone/Skype technical support from KSR.  The CS-80 currently resides at the KSR workshop, where it is available for demo (upon request).
