“When considering where to have your precious vintage synth restored, repaired, or improved, one could hardly do better than to go with the creativity, attention to detail, personal service, and overall professionalism that the folks at KSR & RL Music bring to their work”

“I first approached Kent and Richard several years ago when I wanted to have all my analog studio synths serviced, one at a time. Kent (of KSR) restored my Oberheim OB-8, Roland JX3p, System 100m and System 100 to an AMAZING standard, and swiftly, too. I then asked Richard (of RL Music) if they could locate some other analog synths for me and he was on the case before I could even think about saying “are you sure you can find them?”…now that’s something id not experienced before, which for me, translates to a REAL PASSION for one’s work, and DEDICATION to the customer.  I can say hand on my heart, that both Kent and Richard, through KSR AND RL Music, are without doubt among some of the most professional organisations I have dealt with.  Maybe its because they REALLY ENJOY what they do, and for them, the CUSTOMER is there to be not just helped, but kept happy in the long run…to build a relationship with.  Its a comfort to know they are there for those of us who love, own and USE both modern and vintage electronic music instruments. Im happy to recommend them to everyone…which I have done, time and time again”

“I first came into contact with R L Music in 2005 while looking for a Korg MS-20. Having spent good money fixing so called ‘mint condition’ instruments purchased off the auction websites it made sense to approach a company of reputation that offered the genuine article. From the outset Richard was open and helpful and walked me through the process each of his instruments went through prior to sale. Naturally the cost reflected this service but enthused by his clear expertise and with full after sales care provided I took the plunge. A few weeks later I received a call that my MS-20 was ready and she was everything that I had hoped for.

It was a smooth transaction that has led to many more and to a very special one in particular.

A year or so later Richard posted a Roland Jupiter-8 on the website. She had come into his possession as a part exchange and although electronically sound was cosmetically in need of some attention and priced accordingly. Seeing this as an opportunity to buy a JP-8 at what was an exceptional price I put in a call and then jumped in the car. A couple of hours later we were giving the unit a good work out over a cup of coffee. Richard explained that he was in the early stages of establishing a full restoration process for the JP-8 and my unit would be a good candidate for this, once that process was proven. So we agreed that we would see how that developed and in time she could be restored by R L Music. Richard was true to his word and around a year later invited me down to his premises to see one of the finished prototypes. It was simply stunning. In 2008 my restoration took place and the result is without doubt the pride of my studio. My JP-8 now sits along side an RL Music restored Minimoog among other classic pieces collected over the years.

It’s been a real pleasure dealing with Richard over the last 7 years and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend RL Music to anyone seeking a vintage or  classic electronic instrument. Thanks Rich for your excellent service, your expertise and friendship. I look forward to doing business with you for many years to come”

“I’ve dealt with RL Music many times over the last ten years and have always found them to absolutely reliable: every synth is exactly as it’s described, all work is done to perfectionist standards, all repairs have been completed exactly as promised, and everything happens exactly to the promised schedule.  In addition, they’re friendly and extremely knowledgable and utterly trustworthy. I can’t think of any synthesizer company I’ve enjoyed dealing with more”

“I have dealt with RL Music many times over the years buying (e.g. a  Buchla 200e, parts of a System 700), using their brokering service for some very high value vintage synths including a Moog System 55, LAMM etc, servicing vintage synths (is there nothing super synth man Kent can’t fix?) and sales often involving complex international management and transport issues –  And I wouldn’t hesitate to do so again, because of the very high levels of personal service, knowledge, enthusiasm, commitment and integrity”

“I discovered RL Music a few months ago, reading on Facebook about the possibility to subscribe to a paper newsletter for free (which I started to receive in France !). I was looking for a Roland SH-101 to buy on internet and found only 2 in France… then I thought about RL Music and saw that they were restoring one and offering nice guarantee on this totally refitted legend. I contacted Richard by email and from then everything has been perfect to organize the shipping to France. The synth is in a fantastic condition and works perfect ; I love it ! If I had more money I would without a doubt order more synths from RL Music as I think Richard is a real vintage synth lover and really loves his “products”. I dream about Prophets, ARP, Moog and spend (too much) time looking to the pictures on RL website… Definitely, if you love vintage, think RL music”

“It’s always been a pleasure to purchase vintage synths to RL Music. You get pro service and outstanding quality. You won’t find lots of scratches or dings, and no place for defect voices or scratchy pots. Richard sold me Matrix-12, OB8 and PPG Wave 2.3 and they are still top notch – almost like new! The first was beautifully packed and well protected then shipped to me like a charm. For the two others I drove to Rich’s home from North-East of France to meet the man (1500 km). It’s always a pleasure to have a cup of tea in his authentic XVIth century house accompanied by his dog and his CS80…”

“I’ve dealt with RL Music for many years and got to know Richard through a shared passion for/appreciation of synths. Richard & Kent’s knowledge of, and experience with, analogue synths is impressive to say the least. I’ve sourced/serviced a number of larger synths (CS80s, Arp 2600, OB Four voice, etc) with them over the years and have always been more than happy with the work/service.  Buying vintage analogue synths on eBay/etc is a risky business. If you’re looking for a fully working example of a particular synth, in as close to ‘mint’ condition as you’re ever likely to find, you can buy with confidence from RL Music”

“A couple of years ago I bought a restored Prophet T8 from RL Music. Richard could not have been friendlier when discussing the purchase and then very kindly agreed to deliver it personally – a 14-hour drive! “For so many years, RL Music has been the first and most reliable business to find and acquire rare and valuable vintage synthesizer hardware. I was planning to purchase a Rhodes Chroma for nearly 10 years. Knowing about this instrument’s  susceptibility to failure and malfunction, I knew that the only source that could provide a fully functional instrument with the highest possible electronic upgrade and in perfect cosmetic condition was Richard Lawson. In fact, after a few months checking RL Music`s website on a regular basis, a beautifully restored Chroma with a matching Expander was offered for sale. Not only could I purchase this  precious instrument, but I could also enjoy Mr. Lawson`s amazing hospitality and have an interesting talk about electronic instruments. Mr Lawson proved to be not only a very professional and great person to do business with, but also an audiophile connoisseur of electronic music with an incredible amount of knowledge and passion for this field. Ever since I acquired this Chroma/Expander 3 years ago, I have enjoyed its stunning beauty and perfect function. It is obvious to me that it was not restored by someone who wanted to make a good sale, but by somebody with dedication and devotion to this revered and rare instrument. Whenever I plan to purchase another vintage synthesizer, there will be no other place but RL Music. Vintage analog technology is exceeding 30 years of age now, and only dedicated experts can provide the quality of restoration and repair. And, obviously, there was no other person in the world but Kent Spong to be entrusted with the restoration of my beloved Yamaha CS-80. Now, it looks like new and works perfectly. Thank you, Mr. Lawson, thank you Mr. Spong, for this amazing work”

“My experience with RL music was really excellent. Fast, kind and precise communication and, overall, a top quality of the items I bought from RL.  I shipped a Synthex to him, from Italy to UK, and bought a Moog 960 Double sequencer complement: everything went smooth like silk and the sequencer is still as new – as if it come out of a time machine…! I am a collector, not a pro musician, so I am very interested in both the esthetic and functional conditions of the machines that I buy: today I would buy anything from such a professional dealer with high level of confidence,  because I am sure I hardly could find something that really respond more accurately to the reported specifications than the RL synths”

“As a synthesizer enthusiast since my early teens, I became aware of RL Music through their website not long after it had launched. I purchased my wonderful prized Yamaha CS80 in October of 2005 and was struck by how helpful and equally enthusiastic about synthesizers Richard was when I met him at his home in Reading to have a test play of his own CS80 while the one I subsequently bought was being meticulously restored by Richard’s talented partner and technical guru Kent Spong. I met with Kent shortly afterwards at his workshop to see the work actually being done and was impressed with not only how thoroughly the work was being carried out and the pride he takes in his work but also Kent’s obvious joy & passion for synthesizers.

Since then Richard & Kent have always been extremely helpful and responsive to my enquiries, whether I was looking to buy another synth, needing something urgently repaired or simply for some advice or an educated and informed opinion about a particular piece of gear. Whether you’re looking for a pristine restored classic or simply getting something repaired and back into serviceable condition I can thoroughly recommend Richard & Kent at RL Music/KSR”

“I saw an absolute pristine example of a Sequential Circuits Pro one on RL website and after some really informed inquiring with Richard (proprietor) I bought it and he delivered it very promptly indeed .It had been sent so well protected ,without doubt the best parcel wrap i’d ever received. The synth was of course perfect ,I linked it up straight away ,let it warm up and was blown away with its sounds and also the condition of it. I hope very much to do business with Richard again and again. His customer service is absolutely 1st rate ,his response to emails /texts /phone calls were all 10/10 topped off with superb quality gear, you’ve got to hand it to RL Music. I’m a delighted customer and feel very strongly that I can rely on RL Music to look after my gear for years and years to come and will highly recommend everyone I know to buy from Richard”

“Anyone who has grown to appreciate the world of vintage synths will understand that it’s good to have a trusted guide. I have used RL music for buying, selling and repairs and have always been pleased with their skill and service. Richard approaches this world with passion as well as professionalism and has some good contacts and fantastic keyboards to road-test. I found myself quickly parting with a pocket of cash for a large dose of dependable analogue squelch!”

“Vintage synthesizers can be very expensive and given the nature of 30+ year old pieces of technology, reliability can be an issue.  RL Music takes the risk away of purchasing a synth from online auction/classified ads websites.  You’re guaranteed to get your favorite synth in immaculate condition both cosmetically and internally.  Another strength of the company is excellent communication, through conventional means and the Facebook page.  After dealing with RL Music you have the impression that you are genuinely valued as a customer.  The Facebook page has grown to become an online community for synthesizer fans and experts to share knowledge, music and opinions.   I’d absolutely recommend RL Music to anybody thinking about purchasing a vintage synth.  I’m sure I’ll be buying another synth from RL Music, you can never have enough synths!”

“I’m the first one to admit that I’m a huge fan of Vangelis. Reading about his music and gear, one synth dominated everything else and that was the Yamaha CS80. I had to find more about it. The internet was just taking off big time, so information was scarce but it was there. It was huge, finicky (some would say unreliable), getting more expensive by the minute and the days of “throwing away, come pick it up” were long gone. Not to mention they were rare! I did find some for sale here and there, but in unknown condition and for prices that were unreachable for a lowly student. So after a while it became a distant, yet persistent dream and my humble studio started to fill up with other synths. I do have to defend myself a bit here, by saying that I don’t go out and buy everything my idols use. The DX7, for instance? Not for me, thank you. I always try to find out WHY he or she is using this or that particular piece of equipment. Do I like the sound, does it give me something I can’t get from anywhere else? The CS80 ticked all the boxes for me.

Reading some trade magazines like Future Music, Sound on Sound and of course browsing the internet forums, I came across an interesting English shop called RL Music, who were specializing in vintage synths. I kept checking them out now and then over the years, drooling over the photos and reading nothing but good things about them and the awesome work they did with KSR in refurbishing old synths. And yes, of course they had the CS80. *Sigh…*

But then, one day some 2-3 years back I had a small epiphany. “Hang on.. I’m working now, I have a steady income… waaaait a minute!!” I didn’t get much sleep that night! Trawling the net some more, I came to the conclusion that, yes I could get a “cheap” CS80 from online auctions, but with a risk of getting a synth in who-knows-what condition and then spending the same amount in repairs. However, the buzz was that RL Music, along with Kent Spong of KSR, was THE way to go, especially when it came to the CS80. So emails were exchanged with Richard, who was patient with my asking questions and after I had arranged things in my end, a deal was struck. While at it, I also got two mods for it (blasphemy!), namely the Kenton MIDI kit and the KSR Cascade Unison Mod. Holy cr*p, what have I done!! Another sleepless night!

As the CS80’s are worked on only after an order is placed, I knew I had to wait a couple of loooong months. There were some delays, but Richard was always on the job providing updates and generally keeping me updated. Also, when it finally came time to ship it by boat as planned, harbor workers in Finland went on strike. Richard, distraught with the delays (that, to be honest, weren’t THAT long) promised to send it via air for the same cost. He sent it off on monday, the expected delivery date was on thursday. I got it on tuesday. Hot beans!

For nearly 15 years I had dreamed of this moment. It looked imposing, bigger than I expected. With some trepidation, I switched on, letting it warm up for 30 mins and then..

“fnjoooo”

Er.. that’s it? It was the first preset (Strings 1) the CS80 defaults to on startup. I spent all that for this weedy, nasally fart in a desert?? “Ok, let’s see..” changing the presets and dialing the front panel this way and that.. aaaaah! There it was.. the SOUND! The feel of the keyboard, sliders and the felt covered ribbon.. I even found a use for Strings 1. This was it, this was what I had been dreaming of all those years and there was still more to be discovered.

I tried the VST version of CS80 once, but .. it just isn’t the same. You have to sit in front of one and PLAY to understand what it’s all about. As I’ve said to my friends and family, it’s my Harley Davidson, my trip to Goa, my summer-cottage by the lake.. you get the idea. Yes, it wasn’t cheap – quality rarely is – and it was a risk. But I HAD to do it and now… I have a Yamaha CS80!

I knew what I was getting into, so I wasn’t that surprised that the tuning was off here and there, but I had the manuals and I got in touch with Kent and he helped me out tremendously putting it straight, and all done on Skype! I know that if I ever have some issues with it (or with any of my synths) I can go straight to the best. They even recommended another company to work on my Korg Polysix. This is the kind of service that makes you want to come back again and again and I can’t recommend them enough! Thank you RL Music and KSR! I’m keeping my eye on your Facebook and website. That one Mini in particular looks soooo good…”

“I bought a Korg MS-20 off RL Music back in 2009. I was after a synth but had scant knowledge of synthesizers wanted something vintage and analogue. Looked on eBay at a few old synths and a few websites. I found RL’s site, gave Richard a call….sorted! After a few phone calls where he gave me good advice, I settled on the Korg. Before delivery he sent me lots of pics and info. I was knocked out when the courier delivered my Korg. It was really well packaged, bang on time and all I wanted.

My MS-20 is the best example I’ve seen – its pristine. After dealing with silly sods on eBay it was nice to deal with a professional company. Cool, hassle free transaction. Saving up for a Moog next, when I have the cash I’ll give Richard a ring. Yeah I know what your thinking, we’ve all heard the BS, all I can say is give em a call and see for yourself”

“I’d had been searching for a DX7 in good condition for some time when Richard mentioned on his Facebook page  that he had one for sale. I sent him a message enquiring about the DX and got a reply within a few minutes with details of the synth and clear pictures showing the condition.

Once Richard had received my payment the DX arrived quickly, by courier, well packed in a sturdy box filled with protective foam chips. The condition was exactly as described by Richard in his earlier email, even down to the tiny scratch he’d pointed out on the side panel. I was happy to buy from Richard rather than Ebay or a private seller as I knew exactly what I was getting and that since it was being despatched via a reputable courier it wouldn’t get damaged in the post.

This was my first purchase from Richard although I had contacted him a couple of times in the past asking his opinion on various synth related matters and his replies had been very useful. I would certainly recommend RL music to anyone looking for quality vintage/classic synths and suggest keeping an eye on the RL Facebook page to see what comes up for sale at RL and for fascinating discussion on everything synth related.”

“Over the last 10 years, I have bought from, and sold to, Richard Lawson on many occasions and have always been delighted. He has fantastic service, always delivers on his promises and has a true passion for synths. It’s always been a joy, when buying a synth to visit his ‘Alladins cave’ of synth treasures and see all the other amazing instruments available. Amongst the synths I bought was a Korg MS20 in mint (I mean virtually as-new) condition and a fantastic Pro one. I also got a good deal on the instruments I sold to him and was impressed that he gives them all a full service before putting them on the market again. If you want to buy a vintage synth and don’t want to take any risks then I would wholeheartedly recommend RL Music – Ill be using them again!”

“Richard and the team at RL Music clearly have a passion for what they do, which is evidenced in the quality of their beautifully restored synths. When I buy from RL Music I know I’m buying a vintage instrument that’s been restored to the highest possible standards and will last for years to come. The Matrix-12 I purchased was in absolutely fantastic condition considering its age, and sounds even better than it looks! Richard has a friendly approach and always gives outstanding customer care with great after sales support. I have made several purchases from RL over the years and will continue to do so, confident that I’ll receive a flawless instrument coupled with professional service. In my experience RL Music is unrivaled when it comes to synth restoration and vintage gear. I don’t bother to look elsewhere because I like to buy from people I can trust. Whether you’re a professional or an enthusiast in vintage gear, I can’t recommend RL Music highly enough!”

“I first encountered RL Music in 2004 when I got it into my head that I had to own a set of the legendary Moog Taurus Bass pedals. Searches on eBay and various classifieds continually led me to cosmetically ropey units for too much money. RL came to the rescue with a pristine set, reflecting their high-quality cosmetic and electronic preparation. Richard’s energetic enthusiasm and copious knowledge was very impressive and I felt confident that I was spending my money wisely and that my custom was genuinely appreciated. In due course I got to meet Kent Spong at KSR, a man whose cabin of analogue treasures should be listed as one of the Wonders of the World. If your favorite analogue device’s pulse has stopped, “Doctor” Kent is without doubt the one to get it to beat again, and without a heart-stopping bill.”

“I was looking for a vintage polyphonic synthesizer, but was wary of paying the high prices on eBay for something untried and untested as these instruments are getting on for thirty years old . I searched online and found that RL Music had a mint condition Oberheim OB8 ready to ship. Sure, it was a little more expensive than I’d pay for a private purchase, but it was serviced, guaranteed and Richard himself delivered the synth right to my door. I can’t fault the service and Richard is an interesting and knowledgable guy so we spent some time chatting about vintage gear and synthesizers. I’ve been using the synth continuously and its dulcet tones will appear on several albums released in the upcoming year. I’d recommend RL Music in a heartbeat if you’re after a synth that you can be sure is going to function as well as it did when it was born – and that you can use right away in your work. I’m now on the look out for an ARP Odyssey – and RL will be my first port of call”

“RL are quite unique,  they don’t just sell synthesizers, they sell GREAT synthesizers, if Richard tells you this is “Best he’s seen”, he means it… at least up the point at which he uncovers another gem lurking in a basement which you can’t live without! Then there’s Tech Guru Kent Spong who cares more than anyone I’ve  met when it comes to keeping these machines making a noise. He recently restored my Moog modular with an attention to detail that almost makes me feel guilty every time I ‘stab it’ with a patch-cord.  Everything’s perfectly working too… these are instruments, built to make music, not museum pieces, and RL understands the need to be keep them working. Advice and opinions are always forthcoming too, unbiased and straightforward. Their stock often throws up surprises too, the last time I looked they had not one, but three amazing MiniMoogs, all different in their own way and still no plug in comes close.”

“I first had dealings with RL Music a few years ago when Richard Lawson sold a Korg MS20 for me.  Several people had wanted that MS20 but they didn’t have the money, which is why I went to RL.  The price Richard gave me was excellent – exactly what I’d been asking, in fact.  He sold it on for a higher price, naturally, but the buyer got a synth that had benefited from the complete refurbishment that all instruments get before being sold by RL.

Richard was friendly and hospitable, and we had a good talk about synths while looking at the other instruments he had in stock at the time.  It was clear I was talking with someone who genuinely cares about vintage synths and has a great deal of knowledge and experience. I’ve since bought a Lexicon reverb from RL, at an excellent price.  I’d happily buy a lot more if I had the money.  From talking with Richard and from knowing what was done with my MS20 I know I’d be buying instruments in excellent condition, skillfully and faithfully restored.  Knowing what problems can occur with vintage synths and how difficult it can be to find a reliable tech willing to take on repair work, I realise how much it makes sense to buy one of RL’s instruments with repair and restoration work already done. It’s good to know these superb instruments are being restored and made available to musicians who can continue to make good use of them.”

“Take it from me (a non professional hobbyist): “What you see at RL Music is what you get.” Literally. I got in touch (2007) with Richard and Kent (KSR) when I was after their immaculate looking/working OB-8 (Oberheim)

The website is accurate/detailed, both in description (items) and background information (business model): it reflects a unique & professional approach and gives a fair impression of their ‘behind the scenes’ work (something I felt confident about before buying my OB-8 from them in 2007) Ever since then RL Music has provided me “plug and play” instruments, backed up by Kent (KSR): always in perfect working order (technically) and up to the highest possible standards (cosmetic condition) Communication is important and was excellent so far. We’ve talked many things through (e-mail/on the phone) before trading.

As I prefer to collect my synths in person, I’ve visited Richard on several occasions driving from Belgium to the UK, this gave our business a more personal touch/feeling, mainly due to his warm approach (along with that of the Lady of the house) When it comes to Vintage/Classic Synths, RL Music is the one you can’t ignore. A happy customer is a customer who returns. And I’m still happy. Whenever I’m in search for something specific, I’ll check this website first. Meanwhile spread these words: RL Music/KSR. You won’t be disappointed in their services. I can guarantee :-)”

“Over the last 10 years, i have bought various vintage synths from RL music / Richard Lawson (Arp-2600, Korg MS-50, for example). They all arrived in mint condition and in a great and safe packaging. Communication with RL Music was always great and Richard was always helpful with my various questions.

if you want a vintage synth that is in top condition and that will remain in fully working condition for many years to come, then you have to consider buying one from RL music. I can easily say that their service is second to none.”

“RL Music was one of my first stops for sourcing an Oberheim OB-1 in brilliant condition. Their reputation for reliability, quality of service and communication was well deserved and I got a great refurb’d unit in perfect working order. I was also very happy with the care taken to package the unit safely for shipping, which showed a genuine concern that the synth arrived with no faults, something that doesn’t always happen when buying vintage equipment!

I’d have no hesitation in recommending RL Music to anyone considering servicing their vintage synths, after all these synths are an investment that needs looking after and RL will help you do that professionally. I’ll definitely be doing the same again myself in future.”

“After many attempts to find a professional dealer in vintage synthesizers on the web, finally I found RL Music.  RL Music is a very good business for everybody to find an old synth or electric piano or any vintage musical instruments in perfect condition. I felt they really cared in our communications and supported me before and after buying my Jupiter 6 and 8 – two fantastic keyboards I use during live performances with my band, and for recording. Each time I visit the RL website I can see a Prophet 5, a Minimoog or a Memory moog, an Arp 2600, Synthex, Rhodes, CP, Wurly and so on, as if they were brand new! Trust me, no other new synthesizers or modern computer DAW can challenge with these original vintage machines!  I recommend RL Music on all web channels so that these vintage monsters can still exist and work because of these guys!”

“RL Music came across my path over ten years ago. I have since kept going back as their customer service is second to none, hands up! dealing with instruments that are so electronically complex means that, occasionally things can go wrong. You need to deal with professionals who are reliable and who you trust they are going to fix things quick and right. RLMusic have continuously done that.

My finest experience has been with the legendary CS80 who was carefully restored and nearly 8 years down the line, still performs beautifully. Richard was caring enough to provide the machine with her original manual, which was a most appreciated and professional touch!

I always keep an eye on their website and will continue to do so. There is, let me emphasise this, no better port of call to buy vintage and rare synths. We wish them all the best for the future!”

“I purchased three synthesisers from RL Music; a Yamaha CS80, an EMS VCS3 and keyboard, and a Roland MKS80. The Roland and the Yamaha were in very good condition and the EMS was in mint condition. I found RL Music easy to communicate with and fair and honest in their dealings.

“RL music is the only place to buy a professionally restored synthesizers ready for recording. The reason is Richard and Kent’s passion and expertise plus a huge inventory of hard to find spare parts. I bought a Korg PS-3200 which is a joy and fully restored a Yamaha CS-80 to tuning stability and beauty beyond belief. Loads of people charge high prices for vintage synths but I found that only RL truly does the job of restoring to as new or better.
