RA Moog Modular IIIC...

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from January 2025

Servicing Status:  Subject to negotiation – see notes below.

Remarks:

We have decided to sell our 1968 RA Moog Modular IIIC – a 3-cabinet authentic, period correct all RA Moog modules system that dates from 1968.

This instrument forms a part of the RL Music Vintage Synthesizer Collection.  We have managed to keep some of the very best examples of Vintage Synthesizers that have come through our business over the last 22 years which we kept for our pleasure and interest. Whilst having a privileged position as a specialist dealer in this genre of equipment, we managed to hang on to particular instruments that were interesting and inspiring.  The RA Moog Modular IIIC is one of 40 instruments we have, but is the oldest and most historically important.

Due to the nature of such a rare and historic instrument, certain aspects of the sale will be unique, so we have tried our best here to fully represent the instrument with all the information we have available and honestly and acutely describe it. We encourage any prospective buyer to ensure you have all you need to make an informed decision to purchase it, so we are available to field any enquiry you may have, but we hope the following information covers all the pertinent details on this very special instrument.

Provenance:

We purchased this system via a VEMIA auction in November 2014 and collected it from the seller directly in the UK. The owner at that time of the sale had renowned synth-tech, James Walker, carry out a health check.  After we collected it from the seller in December 2014, we set it up and fully tested it and it was all working perfectly, but it has been in storage since so will need servicing.

We were told by the seller that they purchased it directly from Martin Newcomb’s Synthesiser Museum in 1999, so this RA Moog is featured in the Analog Heaven video production.  We have the original VHS cassette from this, but you can now find that on YouTube, link below:

https://youtu.be/IXaJnLsx1kg?si=ywAAFijJP1T6gsj2

The VEMIA Auction details for this RA Moog did highlight a modification carried out by Moog themselves, which we noted, so here are the details:

Moog (in the USA) updated some control components in the 901A Oscillator Controllers (not the Oscillators themselves) so that the 901A Oscillators can now tune to scale across the full 5 Octaves.

This modification does not of course alter the Oscillator tone. James Walker then replicated this modification to the other 2 x 901A Oscillator Controllers. Before this update, the RA Moog only accurately scaled across a single Octave, which is typical for these very early Moog instruments.

The other item of note from the VEMIA Auction in November 2014 on this system was that many of the yellow labels on the modules are no longer attached. The seller in 2014 did not know why these labels had been removed but it’s something that had been done during the lifetime of the instrument. Some modules have their yellow tags still attached, so you can see these from the photos of the reader of the cabinets below, but these are all 100% genuine RA Moog modules.

Historical Context:

The RA Moog Modular synthesizer, designed by Robert Arthur Moog in the 1960s, holds a seminal place in the history of music technology and electronic sound design. This essay explores its historical significance, cultural impact, technical innovations, and enduring legacy in detail.

Introduction

The advent of the RA Moog Modular marked a transformative moment in music. By making electronic sound synthesis accessible, flexible, and expressive, it catalysed the growth of electronic music and shaped numerous genres. Robert Moog’s groundbreaking work not only redefined how music could be produced but also introduced entirely new auditory experiences that resonated across artistic and scientific domains.

The Pre-Moog Era: Setting the Stage

Before the Moog Modular, electronic sound generation was largely confined to academic institutions and cumbersome, experimental devices such as the RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer. These early machines were complex, immobile, and lacked the intuitive interfaces necessary for broader adoption. The idea of a portable and modular synthesizer—something that musicians could use in real-time performances or studio sessions—was virtually non-existent. The RA Moog Modular emerged as a response to these limitations, building upon the pioneering ideas of early electronic music visionaries like Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Raymond Scott.

Technical Innovations

1. Modular Design

The RA Moog Modular’s most groundbreaking feature was its modular architecture. Musicians could assemble a system tailored to their needs by connecting individual modules, such as oscillators, filters, and envelope generators. This flexibility revolutionised the approach to sound synthesis.

2. Voltage-Controlled Oscillators (VCOs)

Voltage-controlled oscillators allowed precise and dynamic control of pitch, a cornerstone of analogue synthesis. The RA Moog Modular’s VCOs provided stability and tunability unmatched by earlier technologies.

3. Voltage-Controlled Filters (VCFs)

The ladder filter design, patented by Robert Moog, became iconic for its warm, musical tone. This filter’s ability to sculpt harmonic content with resonance was a defining characteristic of the Moog sound.

4. Envelope Generators and Amplifiers

The inclusion of envelope generators (ADSR—Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) enabled nuanced articulation of sounds. Paired with voltage-controlled amplifiers (VCAs), these tools gave musicians unprecedented expressive capabilities.

5. Patch Cables and Signal Routing

The use of patch cables to connect modules offered an intuitive, hands-on approach to sound design. This method inspired creativity and experimentation, making the instrument a powerful tool for composers and performers.

Cultural and Artistic Impact

1. Adoption by Pioneering Musicians

The RA Moog Modular quickly found its way into the hands of forward-thinking musicians and composers. Wendy Carlos’s 1968 album *Switched-On Bach* demonstrated the potential of the synthesizer as a legitimate musical instrument, bridging classical music and modern technology. Similarly, artists like Keith Emerson, Isao Tomita, and Sun Ra pushed the boundaries of what the synthesizer could achieve in various genres.

2. Integration into Popular Music

The Moog Modular became a staple in the emerging psychedelic and progressive rock scenes of the late 1960s and 1970s. Bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Yes incorporated its distinctive sounds into their recordings, helping to propel the synthesizer into mainstream popularity.

3. Influence on Electronic and Experimental Genres

Beyond popular music, the RA Moog Modular catalysed the evolution of electronic genres. Early pioneers of ambient, techno, and industrial music used the instrument to explore new sonic landscapes, laying the groundwork for countless sub-genres.

Educational and Scientific Contributions

1. Tools for Academia

Universities and research institutions adopted the RA Moog Modular for teaching and experimental purposes. Its versatility made it an invaluable resource for studying acoustics, psychoacoustics, and sound synthesis.

2. Inspiration for Future Innovators

The RA Moog Modular’s design principles inspired subsequent generations of synthesizer engineers. Its modular approach influenced the development of Eurorack systems and software synthesizers, ensuring its legacy in both hardware and digital domains.

Enduring Legacy

1. Vintage Appeal and Collectibility

Today, original RA Moog Modular systems are highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts. Their iconic status and historical value make them prized artefacts in the world of music technology.

2. Reissues and Modern Adaptations

Modern reissues and software emulations continue to honour the RA Moog Modular’s legacy. These products enable contemporary musicians to experience the instrument’s capabilities while benefiting from advances in technology.

3. Influence on Modern Synthesis

The concepts pioneered by the RA Moog Modular—modularity, voltage control, and user-centric design—remain foundational in modern synthesizer design. From analogue revival instruments to digital workstations, the Moog ethos endures.

Conclusion

The RA Moog Modular synthesizer is more than an instrument; it is a cornerstone of modern music history. Its technical innovations, cultural impact, and enduring influence on music and technology underscore its importance as a transformative force. By bridging the gap between experimental sound and mainstream music, Robert Moog’s creation empowered generations of musicians to redefine the boundaries of sonic expression. As a symbol of creativity and innovation, the RA Moog Modular continues to inspire, proving its relevance more than half a century after its inception.

About Conservation & Servicing:

The RA Moog has been stored in our secure facility for 10 years, so will require servicing, but we are not having this work carried out in advance of the instrument going up for sale, the reasons for this are as follows:

Depending on your preference, will can have our Vintage Moog specialist synth-tech, Kent Spong at KSR, carry out the servicing work once we have completed the sale but we will not include restoration work to any of the modules or the wood cabinets as this historic instrument needs to be protected and conserved in its original condition.  This means any servicing would be carried out sympathetically and would clean and refurbish any parts as necessary but not replace anything unless it’s a critical requirement to ensure operational stability.

Some buyers may have a preferred tech do this work or in fact might prefer the Moog to be left untouched, so we have quoted a two-tier price option below so you can decide what you want to do.

If you would like us to have the RA Moog serviced by Kent at KSR, then the system will come with a 3-month warranty from us.  If you prefer to take the RA Moog ‘as-is’ and make arrangements to have any servicing carried out by your tech then we will not be providing any warranty on the sale of the instrument.

This RA Moog Modular came from the factory as a US 110V system, so we had not modified it in any way from the factory stock spec. All three cabinets operate on US 110V. We will supply two step-down transformers for use in the UK/EU in the sale.

We do not have any original user or service manuals or cables with this system, other than the power cables for the cabinets. Accessory items like 1/4″ inch Patch-Cables and S-trig cables can be sourced from excellent suppliers like synthesizers.com in the USA – link to their website: https://shop.synthesizers.com/pages/cables

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this RA Moog Modular System worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.

We partner exclusively with established and trusted shipping providers that offer door-to-door service with online tracking. The goods will be fully insured for their sales value under a separate Marine Insurance Policy, the cost of which will be provided upon quotation. Please note that due to the significant bureaucracy involved in shipping overseas from the UK, there may be additional unforeseen administrative costs. These charges will be identified as a post-sale activity and passed on to the buyer at cost, ensuring that we do not profit from any logistics or packaging-related expenses.

We intend to have the Moog professionally packaged and palletised to ensure minimum handling and maximum safety during transport.  There would be some delays in getting the packaging solution quoted for our professional packaging partner (Neal Brothers Packaging and Export Packing UK).

Alternatively, UK buyers can collect the RA Moog from us in Reading, Berkshire, or we might be able to arrange a dedicated delivery in person, subject to the destination address & quotation. We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

Sales Price:

£125,000 GBP – supplied without any servicing work – sold ‘as is’

£130,000 GBP  – Servicing by KSR included

(KSR – Service Fees £5,000 GBP – RL Music 90-day warranty included)

As this RA Moog Modular is owned by RL Music, VAT is applicable on the sale of this to UK buyers. Packing & shipping are also subject to VAT @ 20% should you need the goods shipped to you.

Korg PS-3200 –...

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from January 2025

Servicing Status:

KSR had undertaken an extensive cosmetic and operational restoration, with the project spanning several years but mostly completed by the end of 2024, thanks to the fine efforts of Kent Spong.

Remarks:

We have decided to sell our complete system Korg PS-3200.  This instrument forms a part of the RL Music Vintage Synthesizer Collection.  We have managed to keep some of the very best examples of Vintage Synthesizers that come through our business over the last 22 years which we kept for our pleasure and interest. Whilst having a privileged position as a specialist dealer in this genre of equipment, we managed to hang on to particular instruments that were interesting and inspiring to us.  This Korg PS-3200 is among 40 instruments we own, and it has been the subject of a full and very detailed cosmetic and operational restoration by our trusted vintage synth tech, Kent Spong of KSR.

It’s generally accepted that Korg only produced around 200 of the PS-3200, a number that is difficult to verify with any accuracy, but regardless of it being 100 or 500 units made, such limited quantities make this model a very rare hand-made instrument by any definition.

Due to the nature of limited production run instruments like this Korg PS-3200, certain aspects to the sale will be unique, so we have tried our best here to fully represent the instrument with all the information we have available and honestly and acutely describe it. We encourage any prospective buyer to ensure you have all you need to make an informed decision to purchase it, so we are available to field any enquiry you may have, but we hope the following information covers all the pertinent details on this very special instrument.

Provenance:

We purchased this PS-3200 from a UK seller (an expert user) in 2015, and we collected it in person from their studio in the South of England. At the time of the sale, the Korg was fully working but had not been professionally serviced so we decided to add it to our Korg ‘PS’ collection as this completed the full lineup and then decide later on what we wanted to do with it. We do not have any prior history about this PS-3200, but like most examples of this model we have seen over the years, they are generally well looked after, robust and reliable hand-made instruments by Korg.

The overall condition of the PS-3200 was all original and very good but it was showing signs of wear to all the cosmetic surfaces and the faux wooden cabinet, wear that was indicative of a 35+-year-old (at the time) synthesizer, so after some consideration, we decided to go for a full operational and cosmetic restoration.  This kind of very high-level restoration was something we used to do quite a lot in the past but demand for highly restored vintage synths has declined in recent times due to the accelerating prices for vintage gear in any condition, so we found that prices have dominated people’s decisions rather than the added value (and cost) that comes with restoration work. However, as we owned this PS-3200 for our private collection then the huge restoration effort and costs were a personal choice, and it most certainly added value to this particular example.

System Configuration:

PS-3200 – Main frame

PS-3010 – Keyboard Controller

PS-3030 – Remote

PS-3001 – Cable

Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kit Fitted

This particular PS-3200 comes with the extremely rare PS-3030 Remote, which was a unique solution for live-playing musicians to have access to the PS-3200 patch memories. It’s rather a quirky device through modern eyes but in the context of a synth player in 1978, this was a remarkable high-tech, ground-breaking facility for a polyphonic synthesiser for its time.

We purchased a brand new MIDI retrofit kit from Kenton Electronics UK for this PS-3200, so KSR installed this into the Korg at the time the operational restoration work was being carried out.

Historical Context:

The Korg PS-3200 is a historically significant synthesizer that emerged during a transformative period in electronic music. Here’s a detailed historical context for its development and impact:

  1. The Synthesizer Revolution of the 1970s

The 1970s were a golden age for synthesizer innovation. As electronic music gained popularity, musicians and producers sought more expressive and versatile instruments. Early synthesizers, like the Moog Modular systems and ARP 2600, were groundbreaking but often monophonic (capable of playing only one note at a time). The demand for polyphonic synthesizers—capable of playing multiple notes simultaneously—grew, leading to the development of instruments like the Korg PS-3200.

2. Korg’s Entry into the Synthesizer Market

Korg, founded in 1962 by Tsutomu Katoh and Tadashi Osanai, initially focused on producing rhythm machines and electronic keyboards. By the mid-1970s, Korg had established itself as a serious competitor in the synthesizer market with instruments like the Korg MiniKorg 700 and the Korg MaxiKorg. The PS-3200, released in 1978, was part of Korg’s PS (Polyphonic Synthesizer) series, which also included the PS-3100 and PS-3300. These instruments were designed to meet the growing demand for polyphonic capabilities in a professional studio and live performance context.

3. Technological Advancements in the PS-3200

The PS-3200 was a technological marvel for its time. Key features included:

48-note polyphony: Unprecedented for an analogue synthesizer, allowing for rich, layered sounds.

Programmable presets: Unlike many analogue synthesizers of the era, the PS-3200 allowed users to save and recall sounds, a feature that was highly innovative.

Unison detuning: This feature allowed for thick, chorused sounds that became a hallmark of the PS-3200’s sonic character.

These advancements made the PS-3200 one of the most advanced synthesizers of its time, competing with other high-end polyphonic synthesizers like the Yamaha GX-1 and the Oberheim Polyphonic Synthesizer.

4. Limited Production and Exclusivity

The PS-3200 was a hand-built instrument, requiring significant labor and expertise to assemble. This, combined with its high cost limited its production would have had a niche appeal to buyers in the late 1970’s. As a result, it was primarily used by professional musicians, studios, and wealthy enthusiasts. Its exclusivity and advanced features contributed to its legendary status.

5. Influence on Music and Culture

The PS-3200 was used by prominent artists and producers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its lush, analogue sound made it ideal for creating pads, strings, and atmospheric textures. While it was not as widely adopted as some other synthesizers of the era (like the Minimoog or Prophet-5), it had a significant impact on the development of electronic music and synthesizer design.

6. Legacy and Historical Significance

The Korg PS-3200 represents a pivotal moment in the history of synthesizers. It showcased the potential of polyphonic analogue synthesis and programmable presets, paving the way for future innovations in electronic music technology. Today, the PS-3200 is a highly sought-after collector’s item, valued for its rarity, historical importance, and unique sound.

Conclusion

The Korg PS-3200 is a symbol of the creativity and ambition of the late 1970s synthesizer industry. Its advanced features and limited production have cemented its place as a classic in the history of electronic music, influencing both the technology and the artistry of sound synthesis.

About Restoration & Servicing:

This Korg PS-3200 has been subjected to what we used to term as ‘Total Restoration,’ so a complete operational and cosmetic overhaul plus brand new cabinets were produced by Ross Lamond in solid Walnut for the mainframe, PS-3010 Keyboard Controller and the end-cheeks for the PS-3030 Remote device. The original faux chipboard and synthetic veneer cabinets were donated to Ross Lamond at the time of manufacture so he could correctly replicate the cabinets, these are no longer available, but the beautiful solid Walnut cabinets are stunning.

Our good friend and highly regarded vintage synth tech – Kent Spong at KSR,  was commissioned to undertake the restoration work, but there were several specialist suppliers involved in the restoration, so here are the highlights of what has been done to this PS-3200.

  • Complete disassembly of all control surfaces, so all potentiometers and jack socks are removed from all panels by KSR.
  • mainframe control surface, PS-3010 Keyboard and PS-3030 Remote panels sent to a professional powder coating business in the UK.
  • Post-powder-coating, the panels were hand-delivered to our printing specialist in the UK to have all the screen printing carried out. All the artwork for this was custom produced and paid for by us and our printer carried out all the work.
  • Walnut Wood Cabinets collected by hand from Lamond Design (no longer trading) and delivered to KSR for preparation – staining and waxing etc.
  • A MIDI Retrofit Kit was purchased from Kenton Electronics.
  • Brand new 1/4 inch Switchcraft jack sockets for both the mainframe and PS-3010 Controller
  • Brand new power socket on the mainframe control panel.
  • Once all the various parts were ready from our restoration partners (above) then everything was delivered to KSR for assembly:

– Re-capped the entire PS-3200 with new capacitors, inc PSU

– Replace all 1/4 inch jack sockets with new Switchcraft sockets

– Cleaned all PCB edge-connections

– Reassembly of all control surface components

– Install Kenton MIDI Kit-Finalising – system-wide testing and calibrations

-The card-edge connectors on this PS-3200 were all in excellent condition so the decision was taken not to replace these during the restoration.

KSR do not produce restoration reports but the above works carried out are extensive and the final product is more akin to a brand new instrument. We don’t know how much labour was involved in this restoration project as a whole but with all the parties involved, it’s likely hundreds of hours and (we know) thousands of £-pounds.

For many discerning buyers, the investment we have made into this PS-3200 is highly valued, and at the time of producing this document, we are not aware of any comparable PS-3200 being offered for sale in the world.

This Korg PS-3200 came from the factory with a manually switchable power supply, so this can operate on JPN 100v, US 110V or EU 220V.  In the UK, we have this set to 220V.

We do not have any original user or service manuals but will provide a PDF copy of the user manual.

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this PS-3200 worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.  We intend to have the Korg professionally packaged by us to ensure maximum safety during transport.  This would require custom-sized export-grade boxes and associated packing materials, which would be ordered from our packaging partner, specifically tailored to the unique physical dimensions of the components that make up this system, so the consignment would be for 2 boxes minimum. We don’t think it would need to be palletised, but it will be fully insured for the sale price below, and a customer insurance policy will be required for the consignment (subject to quotation).

Unless specified by the buyer, we would not remove all the PCBs and ship these separately, but this can be accommodated if required but this will add additional packaging materials and labour costs, plus that option will impact the post-sale warranty terms.

The packaging solution will be tailored to the buyers’ needs, so please speak to us about your preferences at the time of ordering and we will provide a solution and quotation that meets your requirements.

Alternatively, UK buyers can collect the PS-3200 from us in Reading, Berkshire, or we might be able to arrange a dedicated delivery in person, subject to the destination address & quotation. We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

Sales Price:

£25,000 GBP

As this Korg PS-3200 is owned by RL Music, VAT is applicable on the sale of this to UK buyers. Packing & shipping are also subject to VAT @ 20% should you need the goods shipped to you.

Payment:

Due to the values involved, we can only accept payment by bank transfer, details of which will be supplied in our invoice.  International Bank Wire Transfer is therefore accepted.

Vostok & Oberko...

We are Brokering these instruments for and on behalf of our UK customer</strong>

Came into stock: December 2020.

Restoration Status: A full health-check by KSR was carried out in December, so both these instruments are ready for sale now.

Remarks: We are Brokering this Analogue Solutions Vostok and Oberkorn Sequencer for our UK based client.  Both items have only had very light use at our clients home, so are in almost ‘as-new’ condition and fully operational.

Our client purchased the Vostok around 2010, so believes this is version 2,  and the sequencer is the Oberkorn 3 Version.

There is a lot of information on the internet about these models, so we won’t go into any detail here, but these pure analogue instruments are beautifully made, boutique, buy Tom Carpenter of Analogue Solutions.  Tom builds some amazing instruments, and currently is offering an EMS Synthi 100 type, console synthesizer which blows our minds! You can fully appreciate the talent and love of analog synths with all of Tom’s creations.  The Vostok has a clear nod toward the Synthi A of course, but all the AS models are built to an exceptionally high standard and made to last.

In order to encourage buying the two instruments together, as a package, our client has agreed to a really very good price for both units, so see the details below.

We have the owners manual for both instruments available as a PDF.

Note on Demos, and because…Covid:  This Analogue Solutions combo is currently based in Surrey (UK) with our tech, Kent at KSR.  Although there are strict Covid-19 restrictions in place throughout the UK at present, Kent has very kindly offered for anyone who would like to see and demo the synth & Seq before buying it, to demo it at his premises.  Kent is able to set up the synth & sequencer in a place that meets distancing rules, that’s safe for him and the customer, so if you want to check the synth out then that option is open to you.

Alternately (recommended), Kent can produce short video demo’s to show the working condition of the Synthi A, but this is by request only.  If we get a single request to do this then we will, of course, upload that to the KSR YouTube channel and probably just post it here in the listing, but Kent’s a very busy guy (good techs always are) so he’s not had the time to proactively do this for us and/or these instruments.

Packing & Shipping: We can ship this worldwide, although the packing & shipping cost is not included in the sale price below, and is subject to quotation.  We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics.

Ordering From the EU (Post 1st Jan 2021):

Thanks to all those who voted us out of the European Union, we/you now have new levels of bureaucracy to deal with when you buy equipment from any business in the UK, for onward delivery to any destination in the EU.  In order for us to be able to ship to the EU now, we will require you to supply an EORI number if you are buying from us as a business, which will be provided in the Commercial Invoice that goes with the consignment.  Private individuals purchasing equipment from us will not require an EORI number but the goods will still be subject to VAT, which is charged by your own countries Customs, to clear the goods, so we now do not charge VAT on our purchasing invoice. The VAT rate applied upon import into your country will be set by your own countries applicable VAT rates.

Sales Price for both Vostok & Oberkorn3: £3,200 GBP

Sales Price for Vostok: £2950 GBP

Sales Price for Oberkorn3: £470 GBP

Availability: The AS Vostok & Oberkorn 3 are no longer available for sale now – this listing was updated on 30th November 2021 @ 17:17 GMT.

Note on pictures, again due to Covid: Click on the thumbnail for a higher resolution photo of the actual instruments for sale.  Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, Kent has offered to photograph the P5 at his premises in Surrey, so these photos come straight from him using the best photo-equipment he has available. It’s our workaround for the Covid issues/restrictions and we’re very grateful to Kent for helping us all out…but he’s like that.

If you require specific pictures not already featured of the instrument then please contact us so we can request that Kent at KSR can accommodate your request, but there may be a short delay in getting this done for us/you.

Pictures of the actual Vostok & Oberkorn 3 for sale are below.

BUY VOSTOCK & OBERKORN3

Korg MS20

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK Client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from February 2020.

Servicing Status: A health-check has been carried out by KSR but we will have it fully serviced as a priority once the sale has been completed.

Remarks: We are brokering this good condition example for a UK client who has owned it for 20+ years.

With all the variety of Korg MS20 now available, it’s easy to get confused about which is the one to have, but the fact remains that the original 1970s MS20 is still the ‘real deal’ and a much-coveted full-sized semi-modular system with true vintage authenticity.  The pleasure of owning an original/vintage analogue synthesizer can’t be understated just because Korg reissued it (and the other copies out there).  All the MS20 variants have certainly fired up everyone’s imagination though, which has to be a good thing for analogue fans.

Second-hand prices for the genuine 1970s built Korg MS20 have seen a reduction in the last few years, but we are starting to see a strong recovery for the vintage originals, so now is the time to consider buying one for keeps.

This example is an Mk2 variant, so the filter was re-designed around the LM13600 operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) – sounds great too! There have been no modifications to this synth, and as you can see from the pictures, it’s in good all original condition showing only the normal amount of wear you would expect for a for 40-year-old synth

This was imported from its homeland in Japan, so operates on 100~110V.  We can provide a step-down transformer if needed (subject to your requirements & quotation).

Brokered through RL Music, it is being sold with a full 3-month warranty and can be shipped worldwide.

<em>As with all Brokered Sales, the Korg MS20 will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The servicing is carried out as a priority once the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.</em>

Demos are available by appointment only.

This price has been agreed with our client to keep it keen, affordable, so we know this represents excellent value compared to any other dealer supplied MS20 being offered around the world right now.

Servicing Status: A health-check has just been carried out by KSR. The OSCar was fully serviced in 2019, so it’s ready for sale now.

Remarks: This particular example has been very well cared for throughout the time my client has owned it (since 1990), a testament to that is the beautiful cosmetic condition throughout, and only ever used in the home.

This is a late model OSCar with factory MIDI fitted,

The operational condition of this particular example is 100% perfect. It was fully serviced by James Walker, a renown UK tech, in May 2019 (service receipt available).

The cosmetic condition is stunning, so this would easily qualify as a collector’s piece, but it sounds so good it should be played every day, as well as just appreciated.

Roland Juno 6

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from February 2020.

Servicing Status: A health-check has been carried out by KSR but we will have it fully serviced as a priority once the sale has been completed.

Remarks: We are brokering this excellent condition example for a UK client who has owned it for 20+ years.

This wonderful 6 voice system came from a time when Roland made such cool looking synths and had a warm and timeless vintage sound to them. The Juno 6 was many peoples first polysynth and we have had many tell us that they sold theirs years ago and regretted it – well, you can have one again…and a really beautiful example as well.

Although lacking MIDI, this synth has a nostalgic appeal and is perfectly useable to make music today but you have to use your hands and not a remote computer to play it. The digitally controlled/generated oscillator keeps the system in perfect tune, and this model has the exact same sound and programming capability of the Juno 60 but without the extra price.

As you can see from the pictures below, the cosmetic condition of the panels and faux wood is excellent. The only item of note is a small ‘etched’ number into the paint on the back-plane, next to the output section, which was presumably for an asset ID for some previous owner.

This Juno 6 is sold through RL Music with a 3-month warranty and can be shipped worldwide. The synth operates on EU 220V (UK plug fitted).

Demos are available by appointment only.

<em>As with all Brokered Sales, the Juno 6 will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner.

Price: £1,250 GBP.

Availability: This Juno 6 is no longer available for sale – updated as of 19th March 2020.

Oberheim Matrix 6R

We are Brokering these instruments for and on behalf of our UK Client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from February 2020.

Servicing Status: A health-check has been carried out by KSR but we will have both Both Matrix 6R fully serviced as a priority once the sale has been completed.

Remarks: We are brokering these good condition examples for a UK client who has owned them for 20+ years.

The Matrix 6R was one of the last of models produced by Oberheim during the late 1980s that still offered the warmth of the famous Matrix 12/Xpander sound though its analogue filters, and was a hybrid, so digital in control.  An extremely versatile machine with complex programming facilities, offering 6 voice polyphony (2 DCO per voice), LPF, 2 VCA, 2 LFO, 2-part multitimbral and patch-memory of course.

It’s a nice sounding instrument, and a very cheap way to dial into that ‘Matrix/Xpander’ sound at a fraction of the cost.

We’ve taken some photo’s from all angles so you can see how the racks look.  There are some cosmetic issues with tape reside & wear, and one of the heat-grills has taken a knock, but all of this is hidden from view once the synths are racked, or facing the user.

The rack-eared unit us a UK/EU voltage 230V unit.

The non-rack-Eared unit us a US voltage 120V unit. We can provide a step-down transformer if needed (subject to your requirements & quotation).

Both Matrix 6R sold through RL Music come with a 3-month warranty and can be shipped worldwide.

Demos are available by appointment only.

<em>As with all Brokered Sales, the Korg MS20 will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. Price: Rack-eared example = £790 GBP.

Xmas 2019 Comp

Following on from our facebook post on 13th December 2019:

Facebook Post Link

We’ve been thinking about running a competition, something for Christmas.  In the past, we’ve given away restored vintage synths, but those are nostalgic memories now, much like the instruments themselves, and way out of our budget this days, so how about something simple, cheap and fun.

We have here a couple of new/unopened ‘Vintage Synth Trumps 2’ packs that some of you might know about. We provided some of the pictures for the first version of these.  These were produced by Dave & Chris at G-Force a few years back and they are a good laugh for us synth nerds, and are now collectable items!

Okay, so this is no grand gesture with some expensive synth to win, but just a simple game that’s vintage synth related and will appeal to the synth-nerd in us all.  🙂

All you have to do to enter to win one of the two packs available is sign-up with your email for the ’Vintage Synth Trumps 2 Xmas Competition’ – click the link below:

On Christmas Eve, we’ll pick at random, 2 people from the list and then contact you for your address so we can post the pack out to you.

Click on the image below to get signed up. You’ll get a confirmation email once accepted, which is all done in accordance with GPDR rules.

muSonics Minimoog

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our client in the USA.

We are very pleased to be able to offer an early muSonics Minimoog which are highly prized and rare models. These early Minimoog versions differ from the mainstream production versions (post 1973) in that they exclusively used the much fabled ‘RA Moog’ circuitry, metal-etched control panels (with more detailed incremental graphics), Walnut cabinets, squared back panel, clear perspex pitch/mod wheels.

The generally accepted wisdom on actual numbers of the muSonics Minimoogs manufactured suggest there were only around 150 or so ever made. There is an informative website dedicated to the Minimoog serial number history and registrations here:

Lords of the Mini
http://monsite-orange.fr/MiniMoog/page1/index.html

The serial numbers around this era were written with ink on the back sticker. This number has worn off, but by looking at the numbers on a couple of the boards inside it show that this unit is in the higher 128X range which would be correct as it was made in Williamsville, NY.

This actual instrument has just gone through a complete professional cosmetic & operational restoration in the USA, so is sold with a full warranty, but below is a summary of the work carried out by a professional vintage synth restorer.

Notes on the Cosmetic Restoration:
The original walnut cabinet was unfortunately beyond restoration, so a brand new one was commissioned for this Minimoog, This muSonics has a new set of knobs (from the original company that supplied Moog back on the 1970s), all new keys, a re-anodized back panel, new Switchcraft washers & nuts and all of the external black anodized screws have been replaced. The original lamp style cord has been retained.

The restoration has not been extended to include changing the etched metal front-panel work as it was felt that this cosmetic component was key to the ‘look’ of the Minimoog, so this remains original, although does of course show signs of age, but it’s still in very good condition for a 43+ year old instrument.

Notes on the Operational Restoration:
The Moog has been completely disassembled and cleaned, all electrolytic capacitors replaced (all boards/rectifier board, power supply), all switches burnished & cleaned, all potentiometers have been replaced ((including the modulation + pitch controls)) with brand new ones, all trim pots replaced, all edge card connectors re-soldered, has a new set of matched precision octave resistors and both noise generator transistors replaced – everything tightened. the keyboard has been completely rebuilt with new stand-offs, new keys, new key bushings, all pivot points on the keyboard re-lubed, the buss-bars burnished, keyboard leveled, new cable ties & clamps, and the synth has been fully calibrated (power supply, A440, octave switches, oscillators and vcf).

Please Note:
The MuSonics Mini is based in the USA (runs on 110V), so the cost of packing & shipping, and any applicable import duties are not covered in the advertised sales price below. For a quote to ship it to you the please contact Richard at RL Music directly to discuss your requirements etc.

Guide Price: £10,600 GBP.

Availability: This stunning vintage muSonics Minimoog is no longer available for sale now – updated 17th September 2017.

Roland SH101 FREE Gi...

To celebrate the relaunch of RL Music in our milestone 10th anniversary, we have sweetened the news with the announcement that we’re running a free competition for all you synth fans out there.

I had originally wanted to hold and raffle style competition to sell tickets and raise funds to offer a high value prize and donate 40% of the proceeds to charity (did you see the RL Music Facebook post about that?). Alas, UK lottery & competition laws expressly prohibit me from doing that so….that’s that unfortunately.

The alternate way to get a really nice prize out to you all in the synth community was to offer one of my pro-restored synths for nothing….FREE! The Roland SH101 has a retail value to me of £695 UK Pounds and is a fantastic vintage analogue synth. I can just about afford to offer this great monosynth on a free competition basis and all I ask in return is the following:

If you sign up for the RL Music Newsletter (details in the footer on EVERY page on the RL Music website), then you’ll be registered for the competition.

Existing Newsletter registrants are automatically entered so there is no need to re-register..I have your details.

The SH101 give-away is open to everyone (world-wide) and the competition starts today – 3rd August 2012, and will remain open for registration until the 30th September 2012. A draw will take place on Sunday the 7th October to find the lucky winner.

The SH101 give-away competition includes all packing and shipping (fully insured) to the winner and the synth is supplied with a full 3 month warranty.

So, there you are..a professionally restored Roland SH101 vintage analogue synth for FREE, and you will also get our next newsletter in the post (printed edition) so a double whammy!
