Moog 16-Channel Vocoder MBVO (1979) Oct20

Moog 16-Channel Voco...

Description

We’re delighted to present this beautiful example of the Moog 16-Channel Vocoder MBVO, manufactured in 1979 — one of the most revered and capable analogue vocoders ever produced.

As one of the very few full-spec Moog Vocoders to emerge onto the collector’s market, this 16-channel version delivers the unmistakable warmth, intelligibility, and tonal depth that made it the studio standard for professional voice synthesis and sound design in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

This example has been carefully maintained throughout its life, having spent its time in a private studio environment. It remains in excellent cosmetic condition, with only minor signs of age appropriate to a 45-year-old instrument. The construction quality of the Moog Vocoder is substantial, and the overall presentation reflects that heritage perfectly — a serious studio tool, engineered for professional use and longevity.

So good they built it twice!

In 2020, Moog Music reissued the original 16-Channel Vocoder design after more than four decades of absence from production. The decision to recreate such a complex and specialist piece of analogue equipment was a remarkable statement of intent — a tribute to the enduring reputation and relevance of the original 1979 model.

Moog’s reissue was built to the same circuit topology as the MBVO, retaining its fully analogue signal path, 16 filter bands, and iconic control layout. This was not a reinterpretation, but a faithful recreation — evidence of how well the original concept still stood the test of time. For collectors and musicians alike, it reaffirmed what those who have used the vintage units already knew: the Moog Vocoder is a benchmark in musical signal processing, and its sonic character remains as inspiring today as it was when first released.

Technical Specification

The Moog 16-Channel Vocoder MBVO is a fully analogue signal processor designed to analyse and resynthesise the spectral characteristics of one signal (the “modulator”) and impose them upon another (the “carrier”). This model, developed by Moog Music in the late 1970s, represents the pinnacle of classic analogue vocoding design.

The MBVO offers 16 independent filter bands spanning the full audio range, each with precision band-pass characteristics for exceptionally clear speech intelligibility and musical timbral control. The wide channel count, coupled with Moog’s high-quality VCF and VCA topology, delivers a uniquely natural and articulate sound compared to lower-band vocoders of the era.

Input and output routing is fully professional, with balanced line-level connections for both modulator and carrier paths, along with front-panel patch points enabling external filtering, envelope following, and formant shaping. A built-in voiced/unvoiced detector automatically controls sibilant articulation, and a pitch-tracking oscillator allows for synthetic speech or musical tone generation without an external carrier.

The unit is housed in a robust 6U 19-inch rack chassis, featuring high-quality illuminated switches and precision pots throughout — a testament to Moog’s engineering standards of the period.

Power is supplied via standard IEC mains input, suitable for UK and European voltage operation.

Servicing & Condition

This unit was fully serviced by Kent Spong at KSR in April 2025, ensuring it is performing to factory specification and ready for immediate use in any high-end studio environment.

Aside from this comprehensive KSR service, there are no prior maintenance or service records available for this example.

Cosmetically, the instrument presents really well — the front panel, controls, and chassis are all in excellent condition. These vocoders were typically rack-mounted and used in controlled environments, and this example is consistent with that history.

Provenance

This Moog Vocoder was inherited by our client from their father, meaning it has remained within the same family for over 40 years — a rare and reassuring provenance that adds further authenticity to this already exceptional example.

Accessories

No original accessories or documentation were provided with this item, but RL Music will supply a brand new IEC mains cable with the unit.

A PDF of the original Moog Vocoder Owner’s Manual is available from our archive (see Handy Links below).

RA Moog Modular IIIC – 1968 Jan28

RA Moog Modular IIIC...

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from January 2025

Servicing Status:  Subject to negotiation – see notes below.

Remarks:

We have decided to sell our 1968 RA Moog Modular IIIC – a 3-cabinet authentic, period correct all RA Moog modules system that dates from 1968.

This instrument forms a part of the RL Music Vintage Synthesizer Collection.  We have managed to keep some of the very best examples of Vintage Synthesizers that have come through our business over the last 22 years which we kept for our pleasure and interest. Whilst having a privileged position as a specialist dealer in this genre of equipment, we managed to hang on to particular instruments that were interesting and inspiring.  The RA Moog Modular IIIC is one of 40 instruments we have, but is the oldest and most historically important.

Due to the nature of such a rare and historic instrument, certain aspects of the sale will be unique, so we have tried our best here to fully represent the instrument with all the information we have available and honestly and acutely describe it. We encourage any prospective buyer to ensure you have all you need to make an informed decision to purchase it, so we are available to field any enquiry you may have, but we hope the following information covers all the pertinent details on this very special instrument.

Provenance:

We purchased this system via a VEMIA auction in November 2014 and collected it from the seller directly in the UK. The owner at that time of the sale had renowned synth-tech, James Walker, carry out a health check.  After we collected it from the seller in December 2014, we set it up and fully tested it and it was all working perfectly, but it has been in storage since so will need servicing.

We were told by the seller that they purchased it directly from Martin Newcomb’s Synthesiser Museum in 1999, so this RA Moog is featured in the Analog Heaven video production.  We have the original VHS cassette from this, but you can now find that on YouTube, link below:

https://youtu.be/IXaJnLsx1kg?si=ywAAFijJP1T6gsj2

The VEMIA Auction details for this RA Moog did highlight a modification carried out by Moog themselves, which we noted, so here are the details:

Moog (in the USA) updated some control components in the 901A Oscillator Controllers (not the Oscillators themselves) so that the 901A Oscillators can now tune to scale across the full 5 Octaves.

This modification does not of course alter the Oscillator tone. James Walker then replicated this modification to the other 2 x 901A Oscillator Controllers. Before this update, the RA Moog only accurately scaled across a single Octave, which is typical for these very early Moog instruments.

The other item of note from the VEMIA Auction in November 2014 on this system was that many of the yellow labels on the modules are no longer attached. The seller in 2014 did not know why these labels had been removed but it’s something that had been done during the lifetime of the instrument. Some modules have their yellow tags still attached, so you can see these from the photos of the reader of the cabinets below, but these are all 100% genuine RA Moog modules.

Historical Context:

The RA Moog Modular synthesizer, designed by Robert Arthur Moog in the 1960s, holds a seminal place in the history of music technology and electronic sound design. This essay explores its historical significance, cultural impact, technical innovations, and enduring legacy in detail.

Introduction

The advent of the RA Moog Modular marked a transformative moment in music. By making electronic sound synthesis accessible, flexible, and expressive, it catalysed the growth of electronic music and shaped numerous genres. Robert Moog’s groundbreaking work not only redefined how music could be produced but also introduced entirely new auditory experiences that resonated across artistic and scientific domains.

The Pre-Moog Era: Setting the Stage

Before the Moog Modular, electronic sound generation was largely confined to academic institutions and cumbersome, experimental devices such as the RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer. These early machines were complex, immobile, and lacked the intuitive interfaces necessary for broader adoption. The idea of a portable and modular synthesizer—something that musicians could use in real-time performances or studio sessions—was virtually non-existent. The RA Moog Modular emerged as a response to these limitations, building upon the pioneering ideas of early electronic music visionaries like Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Raymond Scott.

Technical Innovations

1. Modular Design

The RA Moog Modular’s most groundbreaking feature was its modular architecture. Musicians could assemble a system tailored to their needs by connecting individual modules, such as oscillators, filters, and envelope generators. This flexibility revolutionised the approach to sound synthesis.

2. Voltage-Controlled Oscillators (VCOs)

Voltage-controlled oscillators allowed precise and dynamic control of pitch, a cornerstone of analogue synthesis. The RA Moog Modular’s VCOs provided stability and tunability unmatched by earlier technologies.

3. Voltage-Controlled Filters (VCFs)

The ladder filter design, patented by Robert Moog, became iconic for its warm, musical tone. This filter’s ability to sculpt harmonic content with resonance was a defining characteristic of the Moog sound.

4. Envelope Generators and Amplifiers

The inclusion of envelope generators (ADSR—Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) enabled nuanced articulation of sounds. Paired with voltage-controlled amplifiers (VCAs), these tools gave musicians unprecedented expressive capabilities.

5. Patch Cables and Signal Routing

The use of patch cables to connect modules offered an intuitive, hands-on approach to sound design. This method inspired creativity and experimentation, making the instrument a powerful tool for composers and performers.

Cultural and Artistic Impact

1. Adoption by Pioneering Musicians

The RA Moog Modular quickly found its way into the hands of forward-thinking musicians and composers. Wendy Carlos’s 1968 album *Switched-On Bach* demonstrated the potential of the synthesizer as a legitimate musical instrument, bridging classical music and modern technology. Similarly, artists like Keith Emerson, Isao Tomita, and Sun Ra pushed the boundaries of what the synthesizer could achieve in various genres.

2. Integration into Popular Music

The Moog Modular became a staple in the emerging psychedelic and progressive rock scenes of the late 1960s and 1970s. Bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Yes incorporated its distinctive sounds into their recordings, helping to propel the synthesizer into mainstream popularity.

3. Influence on Electronic and Experimental Genres

Beyond popular music, the RA Moog Modular catalysed the evolution of electronic genres. Early pioneers of ambient, techno, and industrial music used the instrument to explore new sonic landscapes, laying the groundwork for countless sub-genres.

Educational and Scientific Contributions

1. Tools for Academia

Universities and research institutions adopted the RA Moog Modular for teaching and experimental purposes. Its versatility made it an invaluable resource for studying acoustics, psychoacoustics, and sound synthesis.

2. Inspiration for Future Innovators

The RA Moog Modular’s design principles inspired subsequent generations of synthesizer engineers. Its modular approach influenced the development of Eurorack systems and software synthesizers, ensuring its legacy in both hardware and digital domains.

Enduring Legacy

1. Vintage Appeal and Collectibility

Today, original RA Moog Modular systems are highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts. Their iconic status and historical value make them prized artefacts in the world of music technology.

2. Reissues and Modern Adaptations

Modern reissues and software emulations continue to honour the RA Moog Modular’s legacy. These products enable contemporary musicians to experience the instrument’s capabilities while benefiting from advances in technology.

3. Influence on Modern Synthesis

The concepts pioneered by the RA Moog Modular—modularity, voltage control, and user-centric design—remain foundational in modern synthesizer design. From analogue revival instruments to digital workstations, the Moog ethos endures.

Conclusion

The RA Moog Modular synthesizer is more than an instrument; it is a cornerstone of modern music history. Its technical innovations, cultural impact, and enduring influence on music and technology underscore its importance as a transformative force. By bridging the gap between experimental sound and mainstream music, Robert Moog’s creation empowered generations of musicians to redefine the boundaries of sonic expression. As a symbol of creativity and innovation, the RA Moog Modular continues to inspire, proving its relevance more than half a century after its inception.

About Conservation & Servicing:

The RA Moog has been stored in our secure facility for 10 years, so will require servicing, but we are not having this work carried out in advance of the instrument going up for sale, the reasons for this are as follows:

Depending on your preference, will can have our Vintage Moog specialist synth-tech, Kent Spong at KSR, carry out the servicing work once we have completed the sale but we will not include restoration work to any of the modules or the wood cabinets as this historic instrument needs to be protected and conserved in its original condition.  This means any servicing would be carried out sympathetically and would clean and refurbish any parts as necessary but not replace anything unless it’s a critical requirement to ensure operational stability.

Some buyers may have a preferred tech do this work or in fact might prefer the Moog to be left untouched, so we have quoted a two-tier price option below so you can decide what you want to do.

If you would like us to have the RA Moog serviced by Kent at KSR, then the system will come with a 3-month warranty from us.  If you prefer to take the RA Moog ‘as-is’ and make arrangements to have any servicing carried out by your tech then we will not be providing any warranty on the sale of the instrument.

This RA Moog Modular came from the factory as a US 110V system, so we had not modified it in any way from the factory stock spec. All three cabinets operate on US 110V. We will supply two step-down transformers for use in the UK/EU in the sale.

We do not have any original user or service manuals or cables with this system, other than the power cables for the cabinets. Accessory items like 1/4″ inch Patch-Cables and S-trig cables can be sourced from excellent suppliers like synthesizers.com in the USA – link to their website: https://shop.synthesizers.com/pages/cables

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this RA Moog Modular System worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.

We partner exclusively with established and trusted shipping providers that offer door-to-door service with online tracking. The goods will be fully insured for their sales value under a separate Marine Insurance Policy, the cost of which will be provided upon quotation. Please note that due to the significant bureaucracy involved in shipping overseas from the UK, there may be additional unforeseen administrative costs. These charges will be identified as a post-sale activity and passed on to the buyer at cost, ensuring that we do not profit from any logistics or packaging-related expenses.

We intend to have the Moog professionally packaged and palletised to ensure minimum handling and maximum safety during transport.  There would be some delays in getting the packaging solution quoted for our professional packaging partner (Neal Brothers Packaging and Export Packing UK).

Alternatively, UK buyers can collect the RA Moog from us in Reading, Berkshire, or we might be able to arrange a dedicated delivery in person, subject to the destination address & quotation. We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

Korg PS-3200 – Total Restoration Jan28

Korg PS-3200 –...

Korg PS-3200 System

One of the finest fully configured surviving examples of Korg’s iconic PS-3200 — a true masterpiece of 1970s analogue engineering, fully restored for the modern collector.

Servicing Status

KSR has undertaken an extensive cosmetic and operational restoration of this PS-3200, a project spanning several years but largely completed by the end of 2024 — thanks to the exceptional work of Kent Spong of KSR. The Korg has been held in our secure facility throughout 2025, so post-sale, we will have the instrument and all accessories fully checked before shipping or delivering to the new owner. This process will add approximately 10 to 14 days to the post-sale completion time.

Remarks

We have decided to offer for sale our complete Korg PS-3200 System, which forms part of the RL Music Vintage Synthesizer Collection. Over the last 22 years, we’ve retained a small number of the finest vintage synthesizers to pass through our hands — instruments we found particularly inspiring or significant. This PS-3200 is one such example and has been the subject of a full and detailed cosmetic and operational restoration by our trusted vintage synth technician, Kent Spong of KSR.

It is generally accepted that Korg produced only around 200 units of the PS-3200, although the exact number is difficult to verify. Whether 100 or 500 were made, production was certainly very limited, making this an exceptionally rare, hand-built instrument by any measure.

Due to the rarity and individual nature of instruments like this, we’ve taken great care to provide a comprehensive and honest description of this PS-3200. We encourage any prospective buyer to ensure they have all the information needed to make an informed purchase decision — and of course, we are happy to answer any questions directly.

Provenance

We purchased this PS-3200 from a UK seller (an experienced user) in 2015 and collected it personally from their studio in the South of England. At the time, the instrument was fully working but had not been professionally serviced, so we decided to retain it within our PS-series collection — completing the full lineup — and plan its restoration later.

The overall condition was original and very good but showing signs of cosmetic age typical for a 35+-year-old synthesizer. We therefore elected to undertake a full operational and cosmetic restoration. While the market for highly restored vintage synths has cooled in recent years — as values for unrestored examples have climbed — our motivation for this restoration was personal rather than commercial, as the PS-3200 has always been part of our private collection.

System Configuration

  • PS-3200 Main Frame
  • PS-3010 Keyboard Controller
  • PS-3001 Interconnect Cable
  • PS-3030 Remote
  • PS-3001 Interconnect Cable (second)
  • PS-3040 Dual Pedal
  • Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kit fitted

This particular PS-3200 includes the extremely rare PS-3030 Remote, a unique device allowing live performers access to the patch memories — a groundbreaking feature for 1978.

The PS-3040 and second PS-3001 cable were sourced later from private collections, completing the top-spec configuration that Korg could have supplied in the late 1970s.

A brand-new Kenton MIDI retrofit kit was purchased and professionally installed by KSR during restoration.

Historical Context

The Korg PS-3200 is a landmark in the evolution of analogue polyphonic synthesizers. Released in 1978 as part of Korg’s PS (Polyphonic Synthesizer) series — alongside the PS-3100 and PS-3300 — it combined 48-note polyphony, programmable presets, and unison detuning, placing it among the most technologically advanced synths of its era.

Built entirely by hand in very limited numbers, the PS-3200 was aimed at professional musicians and studios, and its cost placed it firmly in the high-end market. Its rich, layered analogue tone made it a favourite among those who could afford it, and today it remains one of the most collectible and musically significant instruments in Korg’s history.

About Restoration & Servicing

This PS-3200 has undergone what we term a Total Restoration — a complete operational and cosmetic overhaul. New solid-walnut cabinets were crafted by Ross Lamond (Lamond Design) for the mainframe, PS-3010 Keyboard Controller, and PS-3030 Remote. The original faux-wood cabinets were provided to Ross as reference for accurate reproduction. The result is visually stunning and structurally far superior to the original.

Restoration work undertaken includes

  • Complete disassembly of all control surfaces; all potentiometers and jack sockets removed and replaced.
  • Mainframe, PS-3010, and PS-3030 panels professionally powder-coated.
  • Custom screen printing using artwork commissioned and funded by RL Music.
  • New Switchcraft ¼-inch jack sockets throughout.
  • New power socket on the mainframe control panel.
  • Complete re-capping of the PS-3200, including PSU.
  • Cleaning and treatment of all PCB edge connectors.
  • Installation of Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kit.
  • Full system testing, calibration, and final assembly by KSR.

The edge connectors were found to be in excellent condition and were retained.

While KSR does not issue formal restoration reports, the scale and quality of this work are exceptional — the instrument now presents and performs closer to a brand-new PS-3200 than any unrestored example we’ve encountered. The project spanned several years, with hundreds of hours of expert labour and thousands of pounds invested.

This PS-3200 features the factory switchable power supply (100V / 110V / 220V) and is currently configured for 220V UK operation.

Packing & Shipping

We can ship worldwide. Packing, shipping, and insurance are not included in the sale price and are quoted separately.

Our intention is to have the PS-3200 system professionally packaged in custom-sized, export-grade boxes designed specifically for its components (minimum two boxes). Palletisation is not expected to be necessary. All consignments are fully insured for the sale value, and insurance documentation will be provided.

If requested, PCBs can be removed and packed separately, though this adds labour and material costs and may affect warranty terms.

UK buyers are welcome to collect the instrument from us in Reading, Berkshire, or we may be able to arrange personal delivery subject to location and quotation.

Sales Price

£25,000 GBP

As this Korg PS-3200 is owned by RL Music, VAT is applicable on the sale to UK buyers. Packing and shipping are also subject to VAT at 20% if required.

Payment

Due to the high value, payment is accepted by bank transfer only.
International wire transfer is accepted; full details will be provided on invoice.

Memorymoog Dec13

Memorymoog

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: December 2024.

Servicing Status: A full service was carried out by Kent Spong at KSR in December 2024.

Remarks:

Nothing sounds like a Memorymoog – so let’s just get that out of the way first as it’s a very powerful hybrid analogue polysynth that is unique and demands attention in the mix!

This particular Memorymoog (Serial #2074X) is what we term a ‘Standard’ model, so a first edition before MIDI and a Sequencer was added in production, so produced from 1981, which would date this particular example as around 42 to 44 years old. This was produced as an EU 220~240V model so would have been exported by Moog in 1981 for the EU/UK market originally, so this is not a subsequent import per se.

Our client has owned this Memorymoog for many years and had a Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kit fitted back in the 1990s.  When the Moog arrived at the KSR workshop there were some operational issues that Kent did a deep-dive diagnosis on and found that the (very old/legacy) Kenton MIDI kit was faulty.  We did speak to Kenton about getting the Kit repaired but they said it was a very early iteration that they no longer can support. The decision was taken to remove the MIDI kit completely, but the Moog retains the MIDI sockets and reset button on the rear of the synth, so a replacement kit can be installed if the new owner would like that facility and the legacy sockets utilised.

Kenton Electronics still produce the MIDI Retrofit Kit for the Memorymoog, their current supply price only is £460 (inc VAT & postage), and KSR would charge an additional £150 to install it.

KSR were commissioned to fully service the Memorymoog after the MIDI kit was removed, the servicing was only completed within the last couple of weeks so the Moog is fresh for the workshop and working perfectly, so among several critical service items, all 6 VCOs are calibrated and tuned to perfection.

Why Buy a Memorymoog?

Buying a vintage Memorymoog, a polyphonic analogue synthesizer from the early 1980s, can be a fantastic choice for several reasons. Here are some key points:

1. Rich, Analog Sound

  • The Memorymoog features six voices, each with three oscillators, offering an incredibly lush, warm, and powerful analogue tone. Its sound is often described as massive, capable of producing pads, leads, and basses with immense character that modern digital emulations struggle to replicate.

2. Classic Moog Filter

  • It incorporates the classic Moog 24 dB/octave ladder filter, renowned for its smooth resonance and musical warmth, contributing to its signature analogue character.

3. Polyphonic Capabilities

  • While many classic Moog synthesizers are monophonic, the Memorymoog provides six-voice polyphony, making it highly versatile for chords, pads, and complex soundscapes.

4. Historical Significance

  • The Memorymoog represents a milestone in synthesizer history as one of the most powerful analogue polysynths of its time. Owning one is akin to having a piece of musical heritage.

5. Hands-On Control

  • With an array of knobs and sliders, the Memorymoog offers immediate and tactile control over sound parameters, appealing to musicians who prefer physical interfaces over digital menus.

6. Unique Character

  • Each vintage Memorymoog has its quirks due to ageing components, giving it a distinctive character that adds to its charm. Many musicians appreciate this unpredictability as part of the analogue experience.

7. Investment Value

  • Vintage synthesizers like the Memorymoog do appreciate over time. Well-maintained units are sought after by collectors and musicians, making it a potential investment.

8. Sound Design and Studio Use

  • Its unique tonal palette and rich sonic capabilities make it a valuable tool for sound designers and producers, especially in genres like electronic, ambient, and cinematic music.

If you value authentic analogue sound and the charm of a vintage instrument, the Memorymoog could be a rewarding addition to your setup, and we stated earlier, that nothing sounds like this instrument.

If you would like to have MIDI fitted to this post-sale then please call or email Richard and discuss your requirements with him. The MIDI kit can be purchased and fitted as a post-sale activity, although there will be a delay in completing the work as the MIDI kits are made-to-order by Kenton and they usually quote a 4-week lead-time from order to dispatch, but we can have the kit posted straight to Kent at KSR, for him to fit if your prefer.

This Memorymoog will come with a 3-month warranty from us and operates on EU 220V (fitted with UK UK-style 3-pin plug). We can supply a PDF copy of the User Manual.

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this Memorymoog worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.  There may be some short delays in getting the packaging materials produced for shipping as they are custom-ordered for the specific dimensions of each instrument.  We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

Sales Price:  £9,490 GBP

As this is a brokered sale, VAT is not applicable on the sale of this Memorymoog to UK buyers, however, packing & shipping/insurance is subject to VAT @ 20% should you need the goods shipped to you.

Roland TR-808 w/MIDI

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: December 2024.

Servicing Status: A full service was carried out by Kent Spong at KSR in December 2024.

Remarks:

The demand for high-quality examples of the world’s most famous drum machine never relents, so we were delighted to be able to offer this exceptionally good-condition TR-808 with MIDI.

Our client has owned this TR-808 for many years and had a Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kit fitted.  The drum machine had not been used for a while so KSR were commissioned to fully service it, which was only completed within the last couple of weeks.

The TR-808 is working beautifully and is in excellent cosmetic condition for an instrument that’s 40+ years old and certainly one of the finer examples we have had come through our business in the last 20 years, although it does show some reasonable signs of use. The pictures we took show you the drum machine from all angles, so you can assess it for yourself, but it’s a super condition fully working example that has MIDI, so would suit regular professional studio or home use.

Why Buy a Vintage Roland TR-808?

Buying a vintage Roland TR-808 is appealing for several compelling reasons, especially for musicians, producers, and collectors:

1. Iconic Sound

  • The TR-808’s analogue drum sounds are unmistakable and have become the foundation of many music genres, such as hip-hop, house, techno, and pop.
  • Its deep, punchy bass drum, snappy snare, and sizzling hi-hats are renowned for their warmth, depth, and character.
  • The distinctive cowbell and tom sounds add unique flair, making the TR-808 stand out in a mix.

2. Hands-On Workflow

  • The intuitive step sequencer makes it easy to build patterns, experiment with rhythms, and tweak sounds in real time.
  • Its tactile interface encourages creativity and spontaneity in a way that software or digital machines can’t replicate.

3. Analog Warmth and Character

  • The TR-808’s fully analogue sound circuitry gives it a natural warmth and richness that digital emulations often struggle to reproduce.
  • Subtle variations in tone and behaviour make each vintage unit slightly unique, adding to its charm.

4. Historical and Cultural Significance

  • The TR-808 is a cornerstone of modern music production, having been used by countless legendary artists over the last 44 years.
  • Owning an original TR-808 is owning a piece of music history, symbolising the birth of electronic music and its evolution.

5. Collectible and Investment Value

  • As production of the TR-808 stopped in 1983, vintage units in fine condition have become increasingly rare.
  • Their value has risen steadily over time, making them a solid investment for collectors.

6. Creative Limitations Breed Innovation

  • The TR-808’s relatively simple sound engine encourages creative sound design through external effects, layering, and processing.
  • Its limitations often inspire innovative solutions, leading to unique sonic results.

7. Prestige and Nostalgia

  • Owning a vintage TR-808 is a badge of honour for producers and collectors, showcasing an appreciation for classic gear.
  • Its retro aesthetic, complete with colourful buttons and sliders, evokes a sense of nostalgia and authenticity.

8. Unique Sonic Imperfections

  • Over time, vintage TR-808 units develop individual quirks due to ageing components, which can result in slight variations in tone that add personality to the machine.

While modern alternatives like many clones and even Roland’s own TR-8S, or various software emulations exist, nothing fully captures the original TR-808’s authentic analogue sound, cultural gravitas, and tactile joy. If you value these qualities, a vintage TR-808 is worth the investment.

This TR-808 will come with a 3-month warranty from us and operates on EU 220V (fitted with UK style 3-pin plug). We also have the original Roland TR-808 user manual and the clear plastic overlay that protects the control surface is also supplied (pictured below).

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this TR-808 worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.  There may be some short delays in getting the packaging materials produced for shipping as they are custom-ordered for the specific dimensions of each instrument.  We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

Sales Price:

Korg Trident Mk1 w/MIDI Dec13

Korg Trident Mk1 w/M...

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: December 2024.

Servicing Status: A full service was carried out by Kent Spong at KSR in December 2024.

Remarks:

This Korg Trident Mk1 has been in our client’s ownership for many years and they had a MIDI retrofit kit added, so this example does have MIDI. The Trident had been unused and stored for a while so KSR were commissioned to fully service it, which was only completed within the last couple of weeks so it’s fresh out of the workshop and ready for a new owner to enjoy it.

The cosmetic condition is excellent, and although not quite as pristine as the other Mk1 Trident we are offering for sale right now, it’s certainly another rare opportunity to find such a nice-looking example, and with MIDI.

Why Buy a Vintage Korg Trident MK1?

The Korg Trident Mk1 is celebrated for several reasons that make it a beloved instrument among synthesizer enthusiasts and musicians:

1. Triple Synthesis Sections

The Trident Mk1 combines three distinct sections:

  • Synthesizer Section: Offers a classic analogue subtractive synthesis engine with rich, warm tones.
  • Brass Section: Features ensemble-style brass sounds with a lush character.
  • Strings Section: Known for its silky, lush string ensemble tones, enhanced by onboard modulation options.

This versatility allows for complex layering and sound design possibilities that were groundbreaking at its release.

2. Polyphony and Layering

The Trident Mk1 provides an 8-voice polyphony in its synth section and 16-voice polyphony in its string section. The ability to split and layer sounds across the keyboard is a major draw, enabling deep, evolving textures.

3. Analog Warmth

The instrument’s fully analogue signal path delivers a warm, organic sound characteristic of vintage synthesizers. This analogue warmth is particularly cherished in modern music production, where such a character is often emulated digitally.

4. Onboard Ensemble Effects

The built-in ensemble effect is a standout feature, adding depth and lushness to the sound, especially in the strings and brass sections. This effect is integral to the Trident’s iconic sound.

5. Intuitive Interface

The Trident Mk1 has a straightforward, hands-on interface with dedicated sliders and controls for each section. This makes it easy to shape and blend sounds in real-time, a significant advantage for live performance and spontaneous creativity.

6. Build Quality and Aesthetics

The Korg Trident Mk1 has a robust build with a vintage aesthetic that appeals to collectors and musicians alike. Its wooden end panels and tactile controls exude a sense of quality and craftsmanship.

7. Historical Significance

Released in 1980, the Trident Mk1 represents a pivotal moment in synthesizer history, bridging the gap between fully analogue machines and more complex hybrid systems. Its sound palette was a staple in many genres, including progressive rock, new wave, and early electronic music.

8. Cult Following

Its relative rarity and unique features have given it a cult following. Musicians and producers who own one often praise its distinctive sound and character.

In short, the Trident Mk1 is a versatile, beautifully designed instrument that combines the best elements of early 1980s analogue synthesis, making it both a nostalgic and practical choice for sound enthusiasts.

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this Trident worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.  There may be some short delays in getting the packaging materials produced for shipping as they are custom-ordered for the specific dimensions of each instrument.  We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

BUY THIS TRIDENT MK1

Yamaha CS-70M

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Servicing Status: KSR will carry out a full service of this CS-70M post-sale.

Remarks:

This was one of those ‘time capsule’ moments when the owner of the CS-70M turned up with the instrument contained in its original retail packaging and revealed the best condition example I have ever seen in 22 years as a specialist vintage synth dealer. This CS-70M was purchased new by my Client on 25th February 1983. We have an image of the original sales invoice from 1983 (kept confidential but will be supplied to the new owner), along with all the original documentation, so the Owners Manual, Service Manual and the colour-printed Yamaha Sales Brochure for the CS070M (all pictured below).

The CS-70M has for many people been overlooked, overshadowed by its bigger brother – the CS80, but this instrument has ascended in popularity among aficionados, and we know this synth is highly sought after by those who truly appreciate it.

6 Voice, dual-channel (stereo), aftertouch, 30 memories, ring-mod, chorus & Leslie effects, lowpass, high-pass, and bandpass VCF, fully programmable and with a 4-channel polyphonic sequencer etc.

Those in the know will already tell you that this is one of the finest hybrid analogue polysynths ever made and a work of audio art in its own right.  It shares most of the same technology as the CS80 and many of the characteristics and tonal qualities as well. The big ‘plus’ over the CS-80 is the digital auto-tune facility that snaps the voice cards into tune upon powering up the synth.  These models do not suffer from any wayward tuning issues, so this was a step-change for Yamaha when this hybrid polysynth hit the market, of that over the CS-80 and its pure analogue foibles at least.

There are a few demos on YouTube of these but we like this rather ambient-noodling one from the Channel of MoreAnalog as it demonstrates nicely how the CS70M has that beautiful ambient CS80 vibe we love about this synth:

https://youtu.be/1_jy9ERBTPs

Background:

As mentioned above, this is a remarkable single-owner example that perfectly meets all the criteria to be a fine collector’s item, as well as a usable musical instrument. This is a complete factory stock survivor machine, so has not been retrofitted with MIDI, and no holes have been drilled into its pristine case, so this lacks MIDI, but once you buy it then you can decide if that’s important to you to have implemented or if you prefer to retain its originality and collectable value by keeping it original.

The serial number for this CS-70M is: 1654

Condition:

The cosmetic condition of this example is exemplary with no perceivable ageing to the control surfaces. The faux wood laminate cabinet is in outstanding condition, unmarked, We would grade this as in Excellent condition – 10 out of 10 cosmetically…really.

All the original controls, slider-caps and knobs are present and everything still looks sharp and clean.  We have all the original manuals and other documentation as mentioned above. There is even the small rubber cover for the Keycode port on the rear panel still in place.

Operational Condition:

Operationally, our trusted and world-renowned ‘Yamaha CS Series restoration expert – Kent Spong of KSR, has already carried out a full service on the CS70M, so it’s 100% perfectly working and ready for its new owner now.  Servicing included re-capping the PSU, full system-wide test and calibrations and cleaning of sliders and pots where needed as the synth has been sat unused for some time so it did need some light attention, but we wanted a very light touch with this instrument.

The only item that we need to report that is non-functional is the magnetic strip reader as there is a custom Yamaha IC that has failed on the reader and that part is no longer available. This is a very common problem on the CS-70M and we don’t currently have any workaround for this, so we are declaring it here so you have full knowledge when considering purchasing the instrument.

The CS-70M operates from 100V to 240V as there is a switchable PSU switch(s) on the back panel, and this Yamaha is supplied with its original & proprietary 2-pin power cable. The unit has been fully tested under UK 240V conditions at the KSR workshop.

Packing, Shipping, Insurance and Warranty:

We can ship this CS-70M worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.  As this is supplied in its original retail box, then we would have to order a custom sized export-grade cardboard carton that encompasses the OE box as well, so it will be a large and heavy.

There may be some short delays in getting the packaging materials produced for shipping as they are custom ordered for the specific dimensions of each instrument.  We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote, but you are also welcome to collect it from us in person in Reading, UK.

As the instrument is being Brokered through RL Music, it will be sold with a full 3-month (return-to-dealer) warranty, covering all parts and labour.

Sales Price:  £11,990 GBP

VAT does not apply to UK buyers, however, the packing & shipping costs are subject to VAT @ 20%, should you need the goods shipped to you.

Availability:

This CS-70M is now SOLD. This listing was updated on Monday 23rd December 2024 @ 10:14 GMT.

Minimoog Reissue #08...

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from November 2024

Servicing Status:  A full health check has been carried out RL Music.

Remarks:

We present an excellent condition 2016 Moog Minimoog Reissue – serial #0860, which is currently in our possession in Reading UK, and has been fully tested and verified to be in perfect working order.

The Moog Minimoog Reissue, based on the venerable Model D, is a faithful recreation of one of the most iconic synthesizers in music history. Here’s why someone you should buy it, aside from the fact it’s considerably cheaper than a vintage original.

1. Authentic Vintage Sound

The reissue captures the original Minimoog Model D’s legendary sound, with warm, rich tones and fat baselines that define analogue synthesis.

Built using the same circuits and components (where possible), ensuring sonic authenticity.

MIDI integration for seamless control in modern setups.

Improved pitch wheel and modulation controls for enhanced performance.

Roland Jupiter 4

We are Brokering this Roland Jupiter 4, for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from November 2024

Servicing Status:  A full service was carried out by Kent Spong at KSR in August 2024.

Remarks:

We present an excellent condition Roland Jupiter 4, which is 100% original and unmodified and has been part of our client’s collection for only a few years.  Our client recently commissioned KSR to fully overhaul the JP4, to get it ready for sale through us.

The Roland Jupiter-4, released in 1978, was groundbreaking as Roland’s first polyphonic synthesizer and remains celebrated for several reasons. Here’s why it stood out and still holds appeal today:

1. Warm Analog Sound

The discrete analogue voice architecture on Jupiter 4 gives it a uniquely lush and organic sound.

Its single oscillator per voice (with a sub-oscillator) creates rich, punchy tones, ideal for bass, leads, and pads.

2. Early Polyphony

With 4 voices of polyphony, it brought true polyphonic synthesis to a relatively compact and affordable instrument in its time.

3. Built-in Presets and User Programmability

Featured 10 presets (strings, brass, organ, etc.) and space for 8 user-programmable patches, which was innovative in the late 1970s.

Allowed musicians to save their custom sounds, making it more practical for live performances.

4. Iconic Roland Filter

The Jupiter-4 uses the IR3109 filter chip, giving it a characteristic smooth and resonant Roland sound.

The filter’s behaviour has a unique “bite,” making it especially expressive.

5. Ensemble Effect

Its ensemble (chorus) effect adds depth and width, contributing to its lush, dreamy textures, similar to a string machine.

Cosmetic Condition:

The control surfaces/panels on the synth & keyboard have been deep cleaned and are in outstanding condition and retain all original slider caps and controls. The cabinets and faux wood side-cheeks are all in excellent condition and show minimal but reasonable wear for a 50-year-old synthesizer.

Notes on the Servicing:

Kent at KSR has gone through the entire instrument.  Many original parts were retained to ensure continuity and authenticity but some ageing components like power conditioning caps have been replaced, but only were necessary. all the sliders and potentiometers had been deep cleaned and a full function test of every PCB.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy what’s largely considered to be a ‘gem’ in the vintage synth world, and finding examples that are in entirely original condition is rare so this is a wonderful opportunity to own something quite special.

The JP4 runs on EU 220~240V.  We can also supply a PDF copy of the owner’s manual.

All our vintage instruments are sold with a 3-month warranty, please see our Terms & Conditions for full details.
