Here’s a very rare opportunity to pick up a beautiful vintage Oberheim collection that centres around a superb condition OB-Xa, and is companioned by the DX Drum Machine and  DSX Polyphonic Sequencer.  

Background:

Our client, the owner of this superb condition collection, originally purchased the OB-Xa from us in 2017, when we had fully restored it that year, so it’s been good to see this synth again.  Our client went to a lot of time, expense and trouble to subsequently source the DX and DSX machines from collectors, and was only ever interested in absolutely top condition examples.  All three machines have been located in our client’s home studio since he purchased them.

In addition, our client had made some very high-quality (branded) covers for the OB-Xa and DX Drum Machine.  The DSX also has the original proprietary interconnect cable to run the sequencer into the OB-Xa. We’ve included multiple pictures here to show all these items.

Condition:

The cosmetic condition is excellent with just some small signs of wear to the control surfaces and wood end-cheeks of all three machines.  You can also see from the pictures we took that all three instruments are fully 100% intact, so all have their original Oberheim knobs, faders etc.   

This OB-Xa is an 8 voice system that has the 120 program memory upgrade fitted, as well as a Kenton MIDI kit.

Health-Check & Servicing:

As mentioned above, this system has been through the hands of Kent at KSR as a pre-sales health check and everything was 100% operational, but we will have all three instruments fully checked again post-sale and any service items needed will be applied, but the OB-Xa was fully restored in 2017, as mentioned.

The OB-Xa & DSX operates on either US110V or EU220V, the DX is an EU voltage model. A UK type IEC cable will be supplied in the sale for all three machines. We also can produce a PDF copy of the user manual for the OB-Xa and DSX.

Remarks: 

We’re excited to be able to get hold of this really super condition CS-70M as they really are quite magnificent synths for a whole number of reasons.  These were proper old-school designed hybrid digital/analogue systems made between 1981 and 1984, and it wasn’t long after these came out that the DX7 was introduced, which seems hard to believe really.

The CS-70M has for many people been overlooked, overshadowed by its bigger brother – the CS80, but this instrument has ascended in popularity among aficionados, and we know this synth is highly sought after by those who truly appreciate it.

6 Voice, dual-channel (stereo), aftertouch, 30 memories, ring-mod, chorus & Leslie effects, lowpass, high-pass, and bandpass VCF, fully programmable and with a 4 channel polyphonic sequencer etc.

Those in the know will already tell you that this is one of the finest analogue polys ever made and a work of audio art in its own right.  It shares most of the same technology as the CS80 and many of the characteristics and tonal qualities as well. The big ‘plus’ over the CS-80 is the digital auto-tune facility that snaps the voice cards into tune upon powering up the synth.  These models do not suffer from any wayward tuning issues, so this was a step-change for Yamaha when this hybrid polysynth hit the market, of that over the CS-80 and its pure analogue foibles at least.

Background:

We purchased this CS-70M from a UK collector who had owned it for over 20 years at his home, where the synth has been in regular use. The Kenton MIDI was retro-fitted to this CS70M before the seller purchased it back in the 90s, but it’s a welcome addition and really helps integrate the Yamaha into a modern studio environment.  The synth is not supplied with the consumable magnetic storage strips eluded to in the user manual.

Condition:

The cosmetic condition of this example is extremely good overall with only light user wear & natural ageing to the control surfaces. The faux wood laminate cabinet is in very good order with only a couple of spots where this has been worn.  We would grade this as “very good original condition – 8.5 out of 10 cosmetically.’

All the original controls, slider-caps, knobs are intact and everything still looks sharp and clean.  We don’t have any accessories with this, or an original user manual, but we can supply one in PDF format for the new owner.

Operationally, our trusted and world-renowned ‘Yamaha CS Series’ restoration expert – Kent Spong of KSR, has already carried out a full service on the CS70M, so it’s 100% perfectly working and ready for its new owner now.  Servicing included re-capping the PSU, full system-wide test and calibrations and cleaning of sliders and pots where needed.

Remarks: A very rare opportunity to own what has to be one of the most impressive looking synths of its era (1980), the mighty Prophet 10 and this example comes with a MIDI retrofit.

We could never have imagined that we would have to say this, but this Prophet 10 is the vintage original model (there’s a clue in the pictures), so not the 2020 Dave Smith re-issue Prophet 5 with extra voicing.

Who wouldn’t have had their mind completely blown away when this came to the market in 1980, a twin keyboard mega-polysynth…just wow!  And, to add the cherry on top, it was a Prophet 5 (CEM based version) with 10 voices, and stackable.  So yes, it’s huge in every respect; footprint and that fabled Prophet sound.

The current owner, our client, has only owned this for a short time, having purchased it in the UK from a specialist vintage keys dealer in 2019 (not us) – it was sold to our client as a  fully serviced unit. KSR has fully health-checked the Prophet 10 for us and it all checks out fine (it was serviced properly), although the original micro-cassette that would have been used to store and recall the poly-sequences on those tiny magnetic tape cartridges, no longer works (very common). 

Cosmetic Appraisal:

Overall, this Prophet 10 is in very good condition but does show some normal signs of use and its age.  We have taken some septic pictures that highlight the most obvious blemishes, but we think it’s a nice example that would make anyone a very proud owner.

This Prophet 10 operates on 240V or US 110V (switchable). It’s sold with a 3-month warranty. We will include an IEC power cable and a copy of the user manual (PDF only).

We’re delighted to be able to offer this beautiful condition Memorymoog which has had the fabled Lintronics upgrade (LAMM) implement into it at some time in its past.  

The Memorymoog is an outstanding analogue hybrid polysynth that is unique and unrivalled in sheer power and character. Moog did something amazing creating this beautiful instrument, and they pushed the technology of the day to its limits. But then, Lintronics developed an amazing upgrade to deliver arguably the most powerful vintage analogue polysynth ever, and a synthesizer that sits perfectly in a 21st Century production environment.

Having a Memorymoog in stock alone would be special enough but these Lintronics versions are highly coveted. The cost of implementing the LAMM upgrade is near the actual supply cost of the donor machine these days, plus factoring in the waiting time to have it done by Rudi means getting hold of these very special versions can test the patience of any fan. We’ve seen demand for LAMM Memorymoog go through the roof in recent years, what with top music professionals buying them up, and this trend is only ever going to go one way, so this should be viewed as a rare opportunity to own your own and the bragging rights the come with it.

Background:

Our client, the owner of this LAMM, a professional studio owner & producer, and owner of a significant vintage synth collection, purchased it from a contact of theirs on Germany back in 2010. In they own words, they ‘rather selfishly’ kept the Moog in the own private studio for the 11 years of their ownership and had ‘lovingly cherished’ the instrument for all that time.  Our client regularly had Kent Spong at KSR service the LAMM (3 times in 11 years including November 2021). They told us that the Memorymoog had ‘taken me on musical journeys of discovery that only a classic Moog can do..’ which perfectly sums up what its like owning one of these very special instruments.

Condition:

The cosmetic condition is excellent, so we would rate this 9/10. The wood cabinet is original, undamaged and has a beautiful light wood stain that has a natural patina.  The aluminium case and control-surface stickers are all in excellent condition with hardly any signs of ware.  The only item of note is a small ‘roll’ on the top of the right hand side aluminium end-cheek; we’ve included a picture below to show this tiny blemish in an otherwise outstanding condition example of a 40+ year old instrument.

Observations:

In its original guise, this was a standard Memorymoog, and looking at the serial number (#1619) and notes supplied from KSR, this is quite an early manufactured example.  The tone of this Moog seems particularly deep & rich, so from an audiophile perspective, it sounds special.  The Lintronics upgrade adds a lot of functionality and increases stability of the Memorymoog from its factory state, but this example being an early model, does take a little while to warm-up, but you’re patience is rewarded with the most beautify sounding example we recall ever playing.

This Memorymoog LAMM has (in the past) been modified to operate on UK/EU 220~240V. As you may know, Memorymoog never came with a simple user-switchable power supply, but the rear of this machine does indicate it was originally a 110V. KSR have printed a small sticker under the IEC socket to indicate the synth is set to 240V status. A UK 3-pin style IEC mains cable will be supplied with the instrument upon sale.

What can we say other than…wow!  How rare are these to find, and then to actually find one that’s been fully serviced and available for sale! 

We’re very proud to be able to offer this magnificent instrument to any discerning buyer and it’s just had a full service from our trusted & expert vintage synth restorer & partner, Kent Spong at KSR.

Background Info:

We purchased this PS3300 with the intention of keeping it for our own collection, but other priorities have meant that we are now letting it go.  We purchased it from a very experienced vintage analogue synth collector in Japan and had it imported over to us in the UK in April 2021.

The person we purchased this from in Japan had owned it since 2012, but he did not have any prior history on the PS3300, but it’s safe to assume it had never left Japan since it was manufactured.  The serial number is 780105, so this might suggest a 1978 manufacture date, but we cannot be certain.  The was likely produced for the local Japan market, hence it only operates on 100~117V @75W.  We’ve included a picture of the serial plate below.

Cosmetic & Operational Appraisal:

As you can see from the pictures we have taken, the overall condition is very good, the cabinet particularly so, stunning!  The anodised metal control surfaces are showing some wear/deterioration in places due to age, which is typical with many Korg synths coming out of Japan of this era.  It would be perfectly feasible to have all the control surfaces restored to look as-new, but we think it’s more important to persevere these extremely rare historic instruments in their original condition, but that’s an option we’re happy to discuss with any potential buyer as we can get this kind of specialist work carried out in the UK, subject to quotation.

Also included in the sale is the Korg PS-3001 (Honda) Cable to operate the PS3010 Keyboard Controller.  The original power cable is also included of course, plus a step-down supply.

A Kenton MIDI has already been fitted into the PS3300, and like a few we have seen, the kit has been implemented through the pedal DIN inputs on the front panel.  You will note from the pictures that there are some stickers that show the input to access the MIDI kit function.  We think this is a very sympathetic way to implement MIDI into these rare & valuable systems as it can easily be reversed/removed if 100% originality is preferred, so no legacy of the kit having been installed would be left.  The downside is you can’t access the pedal inputs if you happen to own a Korg PS-3040 Dual Pedal, but as mentioned, the MIDI can be removed without affecting the authenticity of the PS3300 in any way.

This Korg PS3300 operates on US 110V. but can be operated in the UK/EU on 220V via the external step-down power supply which is included in the sale (pictured below) and we can supply a high-quality colour PDF copy of the user manual. The instrument is sold with a 3-month warranty, please see our website for full terms & conditions. 

The service carried out by KSR in August 2021 covered all the normal stability and calibration checks, full function testing and card-edge connector inspections etc.  There was actually very little to do on the PS3300 as it was last professionally overhauled by FiveG, in Harajuku, Japan,  in November 2020.  Here is a summary of the work that carried in in the service they conducted:

Remarks: We are delighted to offer this fantastic condition Prophet 5 Rev 3.2 w/MIDI, which comes from a private seller based in the UK. The synth has had regular use and maintenance – evidenced by the perfect operational condition.

We could never have imagined that we would have to say this, but this Prophet 5 is the vintage original model, so not the 2020 Dave Smith re-issue.

These are unique sounding instruments, and there’s a certain punch and warmth that this vintage Curtis chipset based system delivers, and you just have to listen to a-ha, Soft Cell and Genesis etc. to appreciate how influential this synth was to musicians in the 1980s….and still is today.

Did you know that the Prophet 5 can be set up to operate in different temperaments from equal-temperament.  The operating system allows you to program microtonal adjustments across the keyboard, and store this in the synth memory locations.  This is not something we have tried, but the user manual goes into some depth about how to achieve it.  

The operational condition is flawless, and as you can see in the high-res pictures below, the overall cosmetic condition (wood cabinet, front panel, modulation panel & rear panel) is outstanding for a 38-year-old instrument, with only very minor wear from use.

This Prophet 5 is sold through RL Music with a 3-month warranty and can operate on US 110V or EU 220V. Also, we have the original user manual so will be supplied with the synth, and the dust cover (pictured).

Remarks: We are Brokering this very rare vintage Prophet 5 Rev 2, for and on behalf of our UK client.

This Prophet 5 Rev 2 has been fitted with Kenton MIDI, a JLC Modification to increase the patch storage memory to 120, and the pitch-bend was replaced with a lever.

Our client has only owned the Prophet 5 since 2018, and all the modifications were carried out to the synth before he purchased them, so we don’t have any documentation or history on when these were done, but all the mods work perfectly.

As always, opinions circulate about the good, bad, and differences between the Rev 2 and Rev 3 Prophets but the fact remains that the SSM based Rev 2 simply sounds (a lot) better.  It’s a significantly more rounded and fuller sound (trying to avoid the word fat you’ll notice) and the fabled SSM oscillators and filters work beautifully within this earlier Dave Smith designed synth.

The system architecture does differ quite significantly from the later versions, in particular with the abundant use of the SSM chipset throughout, but that’s the point of the Rev 2 and why it’s the most coveted model of all the Prophet lineage. Reliability is sometimes muted as a reason to avoid them, but regular use and good care is the key to longevity with any vintage analogue hybrid device and we have seen no less or more reliability with the Rev 3 platforms – and we have seen quite a few of both.

What we do know is that this beautiful instrument has been meticulously maintained, and in regular use. KSR commented that this was in very nice condition ‘on the inside,’ which is as important an indicator as the exterior cosmetic condition is. 

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy (arguably) the ‘best Prophet 5 to have,’ and the price has been agreed with our client to keep it as competitive as possible, for a genuine, vintage Rev 2.

Remarks: This particular example has been very well cared for throughout the time my client has owned it (since 1990), a testament to that is the beautiful cosmetic condition throughout, and only ever used in the home.

The operational condition of this particular example is 100% perfect. It was fully serviced by James Walker, a renown UK tech, in May 2019 (service receipt available). 

The cosmetic condition is stunning, so this would easily qualify as a collector’s piece, but it sounds so good it should be played every day, as well as just appreciated.

Remarks: We are brokering these good condition examples for a UK client who has owned them for 20+ years. 

 The Matrix 6R was one of the last of models produced by Oberheim during the late 1980s that still offered the warmth of the famous Matrix 12/Xpander sound though its analogue filters, and was a hybrid, so digital in control.  An extremely versatile machine with complex programming facilities, offering 6 voice polyphony (2 DCO per voice), LPF, 2 VCA, 2 LFO, 2-part multitimbral and patch-memory of course.

It’s a nice sounding instrument, and a very cheap way to dial into that ‘Matrix/Xpander’ sound at a fraction of the cost.

We’ve taken some photo’s from all angles so you can see how the racks look.  There are some cosmetic issues with tape reside & wear, and one of the heat-grills has taken a knock, but all of this is hidden from view once the synths are racked, or facing the user.

The rack-eared unit us a UK/EU voltage 230V unit.

The non-rack-Eared unit us a US voltage 120V unit. We can provide a step-down transformer if needed (subject to your requirements & quotation).

We are Brokering this Elka Synthex for and on their behalf of a UK customer

Restoration Status: KSR to service once sold, and prior to shipping to the new owner.

Remarks: A truly exemplary condition example of the late version (Mk3) Elka Synthex – with the factory MIDI. We actually sold this beautiful example to the owner, our client, back in 2015, so it’s an ex-RL Music restored Synthex Mk3! Due to health reasons, our client has very reluctantly had to consider letting the Synthex go, so we collected in person from them, to ensure maximum safety in handling in getting it back to us.

This has to be one of the finest analogue polysynths ever made and was used by all the top artists of the ’80s, especially JMJ. Built-in 4 track sequencer 8 voice polyphonic, twin oscillator 24 dB/octave low pass filter 6 & 12 dB/octave bandpass filters 12 dB/octave high pass filter. The specification doesn’t tell you that this is a silky smooth performer and in the right hands can deliver and almost polyphonic modular experience…just an amazing machine.

The overall condition of this Synthex is exemplary and has most definitely been treated with love and care throughout its life, and whilst our client has owned it they have had it set up in their home with a dust cover over it when not in use. It’s a stunning machine, a collector grade instrument: 9.9 out of 10.

We reluctantly sold our own ‘in-house’ Elka Synthex back in 2017, which we considered being the best condition Mk3 example we had ever seen. This Synthex now available, certainly matches that in quality, and will represent a fine instrument and investment for anyone looking for the best condition Synthex in the world.

KSR will be conducting a full service/health-check on the operational side, even though it was fully restored by them in 2015.

Servicing Status: A full service by KSR has already been carried out (July 2019), so this Prophet 5 is ready for sale & shipping now.

Remarks: We are delighted to offer this super condition Prophet 5 Rev 3.2 with a Kenton MIDI retrofit installed. This synth has been in the ownership of our client for at least 20 years, although they told us it was in storage for at least the last 10 years, so they commissioned Kent at KSR to give the Prophet 5 a full overhaul/service etc.

The Kenton MIDI kit works flawlessly and brings the P5 into the DAW environment nicely which keeps the synth in step with all the modern music tech.

The service included full system overhaul (re-capped/calibration etc) and clean and keyboard assembly deep-clean with new bushings. The wood case has been also been refinished by hand. All the potentiometers and micro-switches were cleaned as well so all are smooth to touch and operate. We decided to leave the patches in the Prophet 5 as they are actually really nice, but we can install the factory resent if the buyer of this prefers.

These are unique sounding instruments and don’t be fooled in thinking the Prophet 6 is an alternative…it’s not. There’s a certain punch and warmth that this vintage Curtis chipset based system delivers, and you just have to listen to a-ha, Soft Cell and Genesis etc. to appreciate how influential this synth was to musicians in the 1980s….and still is today.

Did you know that the Prophet 5 can be set up to operate in different temperaments from equal-temperament? The operating system allows you to program microtonal adjustments across the keyboard, and store this in the synth memory locations. This is not something we have tried, but the user manual goes into some depth about how to achieve it.

Kent at KSR commented that this Prophet 5 was in really great shape internally and had clearly been really well maintained throughout its life, including the current owner’s custodianship.

The operational condition is flawless, and as you can see in the high-res pictures below, the overall cosmetic condition is very good for a 35+ year-old instrument, with only minor wear from use. The rear/back panel does show some marks and wear to the factory painted surfaces, so we wouldn’t rate this is a collector grade example, but certainly 8 out of ten, and it looks beautiful where it counts.

Remarks: Here’s a rare opportunity to grab the dedicated Roland MKS80 Controller, the MPG80. We very rarely see these units up or sale on their own, and if you’re an MKS80 user without one, then it’s a no-brainer!

This MPG80 was purchased by our client many years ago, with the plan to get the full combo to use it with, but they never got around to it, so it’s sat used for a while. We happen to have an MKS80 in stock at the moment, so we were able to give the MPG80 a full test after KSR had given the unit a full deep-clean.

This really good cosmetic condition MPG80 works perfectly and looks like it’s never been racked either. Being a MIDI controller is can also be used to operate any other MIDI device as well, so it’s a really useful device to have around.

Remarks: The classic rack polysynth combo is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the best sounding vintage analogue rack-synths ever.

The MKS80 Super Jupiter is powerful velocity and pressure sensitive 8 voice/16 VCO analogue polysynth with that big vintage Roland sound, and a stack of modulation and editing facilities.  The accompanying MPG80 controller is an essential piece of kit if you want to really dig down into the programming and open up the synth’s capabilities, and is a joy to use.

This unit is the much sought after Rev.5 version of the MKS80 (see PCB pictures below) featuring the Roland IR3R03 VCO and VCF/VCA IR3R05 chipset, amongst other architectural differences to the earlier versions. Many say the Rev.5 comes closest to sounding like the Jupiter 8, but we’ll leave that debate to the internet to continue.

Both the operating panels MKS80 & MPG80 programmer are in excellent cosmetic condition as you would expect from a rack system, and the interconnect cable for the MPG80 is present. In addition, there original Roland M-64C Memory Cartridge is also supplied with this combo, providing additional samples for the MKS80.

Both units work perfectly and contain many of their original patches, and they’re simple to set up in your studio and get to work with straight out of the box. This combo has come to us from a private owner who is downsizing his synth collection, which is all in fantastic condition, so home use only for many years, which the overall condition verifies.

This combo sounds and operates like all MKS80 should, so if the sound is more important than looks, then this instrument will make a good studio workhorse for your vintage analogue poly needs.

Remarks: Much has been written on these incredible synthesizers and it’s understandable when you use them as they really can deliver a thick analogue wall of sound, and are perfect pad and brass sources just for starters.

The Xpander lineage includes the Matrix 6 and 12 and is a fully midi configured, 6 voice Polysynth – an excellent addition to any analogue set-up and has to be heard to be believed. he Xpander offers a deep programmable architecture for those of you into tweaking but can also be a very user-friendly hands-on preset machine. This means they sit between that digital and analogue medium perfectly and are arguably the best of the hybrid technology of the early to mid-1980s.

This example is a Japanese build unit (serial #700151), that works perfectly, and as mentioned above, has just been fully serviced by KSR. The cosmetic condition is excellent, as you can see from the pictures below. Kent at KSR has also restored the wood end-cheeks on the Xpander, so the whole presentation is superb.

This Oberheim Xpander has come to us from a private owner who is downsizing his synth collection, which is all in fantastic condition, so home use only for many years, which the overall condition verifies. We’re very pleased to be able to offer this wonderful synthesizer as a Brokered deal, and we will be fully servicing it and selling it with a 3-month warranty.

The Xpander runs on 115~230V, is supplied with an IEC cable with UK-plug fitted and an original Oberheim Xpander Owners Manual.

Servicing Status: A full health-check by KSR will be carried out post-sale but this Synthi was fully serviced by EMS in October 2016.

Remarks: A fabulous opportunity to own a vintage EMS Synthi, and this example is in super all original condition throughout.

This Synthi (serial #4656KS so a Mk2 version) was purchased brand new by our client in 1973 so they are the original and only owner of this instrument. When purchased, this was a (complete) Synthi AKS model and therefore had the Keyboard Sequencer (KS) controller, but our client sold that some decades ago so it no longer comes included with this, hence it’s been advertised as only a Synthi, or Synthi A. There have not been any modifications made to this Synthi so it’s factory spec. One advantage to it being an ex-AKS model is that the PSU is rated to easily run external devices like the KS or DK series controllers.

Since 1973, this Synthi has been in regular home use only, and the owner decided to have a detailed service carried out by Robin at EMS in late 2016. We have the original EMS service receipt which we have scanned and made available to view below so you can see what was carried out.

The cosmetic condition is very good indeed, with only some wear to the screen-print along the matrix, which is not unusual. Both Spartanite cases are in excellent condition. The nickel latches & hinges show signs of oxidisation, which again is normal to see on a 45+ year-old synth, although they easily could be improved with some light restorative work if needed. In all, the instrument shows normal signs of ageing and has not any overt cosmetic restoration carried out, which we know for many people is important in terms of retaining authenticity.

Included in the sale (pictured), is a nearly-new Kenton Pro-Solo Mk2 with PSU and required cables to carry CV/Gate/Filter (cinch-jones connector) to operate this Synthi via MIDI. These are all included in the price, and worth around £200 GBP if purchased new/separately.

These iconic and truly amazing pure analogue music instruments are in great demand by professional users, and prices are being driven up fast on the second-hand market around the world, so now might be a good time to invest in one before they become ‘Vintage Buchla or RA Moog Modular’ prices.

We can’t think of a more iconic, truly portable synthesizer ever being made, and even today the design of the Synthi is considered a triumph of feature and form…incredible.

This EMS Synthi comes with way more than a full set of matrix pins, 35 in total, and 16 of them are brand new (all red), so the pin situation is covered.

KSR will give this Synthi a full health-check post-sale, but we have tested it extensively and can confirm it’s working perfectly, as it should really as Robin did all the refurbishment work only a couple of years ago.

This Synthi is set to operate on EU 220V~240V (front-panel setting). We were also supplied with the original EMS ‘Education manual’ for this model and the proprietary EMS power-cable (with UK 3-pin plug fitted).
