Elka Synthex Mk2

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our customer.

Came into stock: Arrived at RL Music on 17th May 2018.

Servicing Status: Full assessment by KSR carried out on 11th May – full service by KSR will commence post-sale.

Remarks: A really super condition example of the Mk2 Elka Synthex, so MIDI utilised and with MIDI sockets installed (retrofitted).

This has to be one of the finest analogue polysynths ever made and was used by all the top artists of the 80’s, especially JMJ. Built-in 4 track sequencer 8 voice polyphonic, twin oscillator 24 dB/octave low pass filter 6 & 12 dB/octave band-pass filters 12 dB/octave high pass filter. The specification doesn’t tell you that this is a silky smooth performer and in the right hands can deliver an almost polyphonic modular experience…just an amazing machine.

The Synthex was very well cared for during its lifetime at the current owner home (16 years), so the cosmetic condition is excellent, as you can see from the pictures. The main control surfaces are in fantastic condition, and the wood cabinet is in well above average condition for its age, so if you are after a really reliable example that works perfectly and looks beautiful, then look no further.

Our own vintage synth restorers – KSR, have very recently fully health-checked the synth as part of the pre-Brokering assessment, so we’re happy it’s fully operational, with all functions/control working smoothly and as you would expect, but the Synthex will be fully serviced post-sale.

This Synthex operates on EU 220V and is supplied with the user manuals in PDF format. As the instrument is being Brokered through RL Music, it will be sold with a full 3-month warranty and can be shipped worldwide.

Demos are available by appointment only.

As with all Brokered Sales, the synth will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The servicing is carried out as a priority once the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.

Price: £6890 GBP.

Availability: This Elka Synthex is now SOLD, as at 22nd November 2018.

EMS Synthi AKS

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music as at 13th June 2018.

Servicing Status: A full health-check by KSR has already been carried out (June 2018), so this Synthi AKS is ready for sale now. The AKS was also fully serviced in July 2017 by SSC in London.

Remarks: A fabulous opportunity to own your EMS Synthi AKS, and this example is in stunning condition throughout.

This Synthi AKS was owned by our clients family since 1994 and it had been in constant use and maintained regularly during their ownership at their home studio, up until quite recently. We contacted Robin at EMS to ask if he had any historical data on this unit (serial number: 45404KS), and he confirmed that it was sold by EMS on 11th October 1976 to the Greenwich Young People’s Theatre in London. We can ascertain from this that the Synthi AKS was manufactured during 1976.

These iconic and truly amazing pure analogue music instruments are in great demand by professional users, and prices are being driven up fast on the second-hand market around the world, so now might be a good time to invest in one before they become ‘Vintage Buchla or RA Moog Modular’ prices.

We can’t think of a more iconic, truly portable synthesizer ever being made, and even today the design of the Synthi is considered a triumph of feature and form…incredible.

This EMS Synthi AKS did come from the owner with a partial set of worn Matrix pins, which we have used to picture it with, but the pins are in need of replacing to ensure a reliable contact within the matrix panel, so we always recommend you also purchase a brand new (full) set of matrix pins, which we get supplied from EMS directly. Please ask us for a quote if you would like this option.

KSR has just given this Synthi AKS a full health-check, clean and calibration so it’s 100% fully operational, and as you can see from the pictures, in superb all original condition (completely un modified). Cosmetically, this 40+ year-old vintage analogue instrument is in near pristine condition and we would rate this as a Collector Grade – 9 out of 10.

This Synthi AKS operates on EU 220V. We were also supplied with the original EMS user manual for this model. The Cinch-Jones Synthi-to-KS cable and power-cable is also included. As the instrument is being Brokered through RL Music, it will be sold with a full 3-month warranty and we can ship worldwide.

Demos are available by appointment only.

Sales Price: £11,500 GBP.

Availability: This Synthi AKS is now SOLD, as at 1st October 2018.

EMS VCS3 Mk2

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK client

Came into stock:  Available from RL Music as at 19th October 2018.

Restoration Status: A full health-check by KSR has been carried out, so the VCS3 Mk2 is ready for sale now!

Remarks: We are delighted to offer you another rare opportunity to own a (manufactured in late 1972) EMS VCS3 Mk2. This VCS3 has a fascinating provenance as it was once owned by the composer, Edward Williams, a former owner of EMS in the 1980s. It was serviced by Robin at EMS in 2016 and has been modified (also by EMS) with a host of useful upgrades.

Our client, the owner, has prepared an excellent presentation document that describes the provenance he has gathered for this instrument (link to PDF below) that outlines the provenance, so we highly recommend you read this in conjunction with the listing information here:

http://www.rlmusic.co.uk/rlm3/VCS3-Sales-Particulars.pdf

Cosmetic Condition:

The cosmetic condition is excellent, and the photos we have taken clearly show very little wear to the main control surfaces (front & rear). The wood cabinet is completely original and has not had any restorative work carried out, so shows a natural patina, and as you can see from the pictures below, is in fantastic condition. All the controls and pins are present.

Operational Condition:

The VCS3 works flawlessly. KSR has just carried out a detailed health check and could find “nothing to report” on this instrument…not bad at all for 46 year old synthesizer! It has very clearly been very well looked after.

Detail on the modifications:

The modifications carried out on this VCS3 where done by EMS at some time in the past, so were implemented professionally, details of which are:

* The Matrix has been modded to behave like an Mk1 VCS3
* Hi/Lo switches on oscillators 2 & 3
* Envelope shaper source select switch (selects where the envelope gets its trigger from – either 8-way keyboard connector or external gate input)
* External gate input jack on rear of the unit
* Input channel SI/Mult switches (disconnects the link from 8 way keyboard socket – useful if the keyboard and external audio inputs are connected as they can interact and crackle)
* Voltage controlled oscillator shape (3 x 3.5mm jack sockets with special patch-pin leads – modulate OSC shape, especially interesting for stereo effects)
* Dual patchable inverter (uses 3.5mm – patch-pin lead to invert signals)
* Two extra input channels (fitted on back panel for CV or line level audio, joystick position to control levels!) with switch EXT CV / STICK.
* “Multiple” – four 3.5mm jack sockets wired to each other to act as a CV splitter when patching the mods together – control several things at once, for example.

This beautiful VCS3 Mk2 is, without doubt, a ‘collector grade’ instrument, and if we didn’t already own a Putney & Synthi AKS then we’d buy this from the owner for the ‘RL Music Collection.’ Alas, it’s up for general sale and we highly recommend this example to you.

This VCS3 Mk2 operates on EU 220V and is supplied with the proprietary EMS power-cable, a full complement of original Matrix Pins and an assortment of Mini-jacks (as pictured). In addition, there is a copy of the bill of sale from EMS (in the PDF), from 2016, that cover the items detailed in the service, and instructions from EMS on the modifications implemented.

Price: EMS VCS3 Mk2 = £11,990 GBP.

Availability: This EMS VCS3 MK2 is now SOLD, as at 28th October 2018.

Korg PS3200

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock:  3rd March 2017.

Restoration Status: KSR to service once sold, and prior to shipping to the new owner. This PS3200 is in perfect working condition, but the servicing work is standard on all our vintage synths for sale, although it is more akin to a ‘health-check’ on an instrument of this fine condition.

Remarks: We are delighted to present a very rare opportunity to own a true vintage classic – the Korg PS3200. Our client has not owned the Korg for more than a few years, but it has been well cared for in their own home studio during their ownership. Prior to this, the Korg was owned by UK synth collector. The cosmetic condition of the control panels & original wood-veneer cabinets for both the synth & the PS-3010 48-key Polyphonic Keyboard Controller are very good, with only minimal wear for an instrument of this age, and operationally it’s perfectly working. The PS3200 has clearly been very well looked after throughout its 40-year life, and likely regularly serviced as well, although we will carry out a further service on the synth for the new owner.

A couple of items of note:
There is a non-original knob on the PS-3010 Keyboard. The original Korg potentiometer is intact, so we can only assume at some time in the past, the large Korg control knob has been lost and replaced with the one you can see in the pictures below. Also, the battery cover at the rear of the synth is missing. Not huge problems in the scheme of things, but we’re just noting these for full disclosure.

The PS3200 is a fully polyphonic, 16 memory semi-modular system incorporating divide-down technology driving 2 VCO’s and micro tuning ability. The technical specification aside, this instrument defines the word “ambient” and has the most wonderful warm, rich and characterful sound that any vintage polysynth can deliver….a truly unique machine.

The semi-modular nature of the PS3200 provides some fascinating routing options for “polyphonic” sound design, and the remote keyboard offers a number of performance features within the CV/Gate domain.

This PS3200 operates on US 110V, but comes with an EU 220V converter – it will be sold with a 3-month warranty. Included with the sale is the original PS-3001 60-pin locking connection cable, and of course the proprietary power-cable. We will also include a PDF copy of the user manual.

Sales Price: £10900 GBP.

Availability: This PS3200 is no longer available for sale (updated 6th March 2019).

Moog System 12

‘Rare’ doesn’t come close to describing how few and far between these vintage original Moog Modulars are these days, and owners are simply hanging on to them whilst all the reissues from the new Moog company are making their transition into the market. The fact remains that savvy owners truly appreciate the historic value of these genuine ‘Bob Moog’ manufactured instruments, and why this lineage is what really counts at the end of the day, both emotionally, historically and commercially speaking – certainly in investment terms.

So why are we selling this beautiful Moog Modular System 12?

Well, this example comes from the RL Music private collection and has been fully professionally restored in 2015. We are releasing this for sale as we already own 3 other vintage Moog Modulars, and would like to raise some capital for some new vintage modular projects we have planned for this year, so here is a golden opportunity for someone looking to own a genuine piece of synthesizer history.

There is a considerable volume of material written about the amazing Bob Moog and his groundbreaking synthesizer designs from the 60s and 70s. Also, we all appreciate the outstanding sonic capabilities of these amazing instruments and why Bob Moog’s synthesizers changed the world, but to cut to the chase, here are the facts about this System 12 we have for sale.

Background history that we have:

The Moog System 12 unit has serial # 1039 and features some early ‘RA Moog’ modules from the time the Moog factory was located in Trumansburg, NY, and some modules with the later ‘Moog Music used after the move to Williamsburg. This is actually quite normal for these models as the assembly/manufacture date was around the early 1970s, so there would have been some RA Moog modules still available to use when assembling these systems. This puts an approximate age on this System 12 at 44 years old…not bad!

In the 1970s this System 12 belonged to the synthesist Jan Ternald of the Swedish psychedelic rock band Älgarnas Trädgård. After that, it ended up for unknown reasons in a small demo studio in Stockholm where it was left unused and forgotten until it was found and purchased by the last owner in 1984 (of whom RL Music purchased it from in 2015). It was mounted in custom-made flight cases in 1989 to allow touring and live performances. The original live setup also included two Mini Moogs, both stripped of the keyboards and mounted as rack modules, and an oscilloscope + a guitar tuner.

The system was then located in a recording studio in Stockholm, Sweden, and used in numerous productions until 1999. The last owner bought the System 12 to London In 2010 where it was located in the studio of an audio design company – it was continuous use (and professionally maintained) until it was sold to RL Music in 2015.

Modifications of note:

The two 921B oscillator modules have at some time prior to 1984 been modified by replacement of the original potentiometers with 10-round precision pots.

An IEC socket was fitted sometime during the lifetime of the System 12 to enable the system to be used in the EU. The power supply is rated to 220V, so it’s possible it was produced for the EU market by Moog, but we’re fairly sure that these systems were supplied with the standard 3-pin US power-socket from the factory back in the early 70s, so the IEC socket is more useful for EU users.

The System 12 arrived at RL Music without its original lid (lost over the years), so we have had a new one manufactured by Lamond Design, and then the whole system has been re-tolexed, with new nickel-plated hardware fitted by KSR in the UK to finish off.

All the 1/4 inch jack-sockets have been replaced with high-quality Switchcraft® panel mount sockets to improve connectivity. We decided to implement this upgrade as 44-year-old sockets can be very intermittent in connection, regardless of cleaning, and this can be very frustrating for users of voltage controlled/audio systems like these.

Configuration Top to bottom:

903-A Random Signal Generator (RA Moog)
907 Fixed Filter Bank (RA Moog)

Restoration notes:

Our vintage Moog restoration expert, Kent Spong of KSR, undertook an extensive ground-up restoration on the System 12 during 2015. Other than the items noted above in the ‘modifications’ paragraph, no components that affected the sound character of the Moog were replaced (or needed to be in fact). We retained the original knobs though as these are a major cosmetic component to the aesthetic of this authentic vintage instrument.

The only item of note is that ‘power indicator’ bulb is no longer functioning.  This is a mains supplied (and sealed) part that is no longer available.  We did try Moog to see if they would supply one from their reissue range but they did not even reply to our enquiries.  Kent at KSR said that it would be possible to retrofit the light with a modern LED style indicator, but we have not asked him to implement this, but the buyer of this System 12 can decide on if they want that modification done or not, subject to quotation.  We have reduced the sales price of this System 12 to reflect this part not working.

We will service this System 12 prior to shipping to the new owner, so please expect a short delay of up to 2 weeks post-sale before it can be ready to hand over to its new custodian.

This Moog Modular System 12 is sold with a 3-month warranty and mentioned above, runs on EU 220V. We will include a selection of (used) 1/4 inch jacks with the sale if needed, but we do not have any spare cinch-jones cables, although Synthesizers.com can supply these from new here – http://www.synthesizers.com/qmse.html

We will ship this Moog worldwide, so please ask us for a packaging & shipping quote for your preferred destination address.

Price: £11,500 GBP.

Availability: This Moog Modular System 12 is now SOLD, as at 20th May 2020.

Moog System 55

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: Arrived at RL Music in April 2017

Restoration Status: A full cosmetic and operational restoration by KSR has already been carried out (completed in 23rd August 2017), so this Vintage Original System 55 is ready for sale now.

Remarks: We have been granted a unique opportunity here as these Vintage Original Moog System 55 (with RA Moog 950 Keyboard & Garage) are super rare instruments, and highly sought after. We weren’t given a lot of detailed background information on this system other than the last owner purchased it from a well known Moog collector in Italy several years ago. The Italian musician/collector used this system as a part of a larger Moog Modular set-up, which explains why the configuration is not quite late 1970s factory stock.

Our client (the current owner) had commissioned KSR to undertake a full system-wide overhaul of the entire instrument, to prepare it for sale. The restoration included refinishing all the cabinets as well, so the fit & finish on this 40+-year-old Moog is sublime, and of course, it works flawlessly.

This is THE mother of all synthesizers and although there are a plethora of analogue instruments in modular format to choose from these days (which is wonderful), nothing will hold the mystique, power and sheer collectability of an original Moog. These Vintage Moogs come with very strong & proven investment potential, so aside from being outstanding music instruments, they keep giving in other ways also.

The System 55 was the last of the great “walls-of-Moog” and this system being from around 1976, represents the most stable and reliable in terms of module build versions. This particular System 55 has clearly been lovingly cared for, for 40+ years.

Notes on the cosmetic condition:

All cabinets and control surfaces on the main synth sections are in excellent and original condition. The RA Moog 950 keyboard & Garage have their original wood cabinets which are also in excellent condition, although all the cabinets do have a few signs of natural ageing and use, however, the keys are undamaged, having an even colour. The module faceplates themselves are in excellent condition (as are the internal circuits) but there are inevitable signs of some wear from around the locating screws, although this is something we would expect to see in a modular system of this age.

The top cabinet did not come with a rear-enclosure board fitted. Many modulars of this age do not have rear-covers, but KSR have offered to manufacture and fit one if the buyer of the system would like one fitted. There would be no charge for this, but the top cabinet would need to go back to KSR to have that carried out.

We would rate the whole system as 9 out of 10 cosmetically – collector grade.

Notes on the restoration:

An IEC socket was fitted as standard on these late 70s systems. The power-supply has been completely reconditioned, it runs on US 110V or EU 220V, although set on EU 220V whilst here in the UK of course.

All the 1/4 inch jack-sockets have been replaced with high-quality Switchcraft® panel mount sockets to improve connectivity. KSR implemented this upgrade with the owner’s permission as 40+-year-old sockets can be very intermittent in connection, regardless of cleaning, and this can be very frustrating for users of voltage controlled/audio systems like these.

Each and every module and been tested, cleaned & calibrated, and where necessary, any decoupling (power regulation) caps replaced. The 950 Keyboard has been stripped and completely overhauled, with every key cleaned, and the key-bed & contacts cleaned.

All Cinch-Jones S-Trig connectors cleaned/deoxidised.
Wiring loom integrity checked.

Other than the items noted above, no components that affected the sound character of the Moog were replaced (or needed to be in fact). We retained the original knobs though as these are a major cosmetic component to the aesthetic of this authentic vintage instrument.

Thousands of pounds have been spent on the restoration work which has taken Kent Spong of KSR, over 3 months to complete.

Module configuration as follows:

1 x 914 Fixed Filter Bank
1 x 992 Control Voltages
1 x 904A Low Pass Filter
1 x 904-C Filter Coupler
1 x 904B High Pass Filter
1 x 904A Low Pass Filter
3 x 902 VCA
1 x 993 Trig & EG Voltage
5 x 911 EG
1 x 911A Dual Trigger Delay

Bottom cabinet
2 x 921A Oscillator Drivers
6 x 921B Oscillator

Roland Jupiter 6

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK client

Came into stock:  Available from RL Music as at 13th July 2018.

Restoration Status: A full service by KSR has already been carried out (completed in July 2018), so this Jupiter 6 is ready for sale now.

Remarks: This Jupiter 6 was purchased new by our client in the early 1980s, and only ever used in the home. The cosmetic condition is outstanding and the whole synth only shows very light indications of use & ware – this is remarkable for a keyboard over 35 years old! We would grade this as a 9 out of 10 cosmetically, Collector-Grade!

The Jupiter 6 has been a hugely popular polysynth since its arrival in 1983 and offers aficionados that beautiful vintage polyphonic analogue Roland sound for a very reasonable cost, certainly when compared to its sibling, the Jupiter 8. Prices for these models in recent years has seen a significant uplift as vintage polysynths are getting more and more rare to find in good condition, let alone the condition of this example we have available.

This JP6 has not had any modifications to its factory spec. This is often important for buyers who prefer to either leave them as stock or upgrade them according to their own needs & budget, depending on what retrofit solutions may be available in the marketplace.

The Jupiter 6 is a professional-grade vintage instrument that’s only ever going to become more sought after and rarer, so here is your opportunity to buy a beautiful condition example, fresh from the hands of a master synth restorer (Kent Spong), and fully guaranteed by RL Music.

Runs on EU 220V or 110V (switchable) and is supplied with the original Roland owners manual.

Price: £3390 GBP.

Availability: This Roland Jupiter 6 is now SOLD, as at 14th May 2019.

Yamaha CS70M

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our customer

Came into stock: September 2017.

Restoration Status: A full service by KSR has already been carried out (completed on 11th October 2017), so this CS70M is ready for sale now.

Remarks: We’re excited to be able to get hold of this really lovely condition CS70M as they really are quite magnificent synths for a whole number of reasons. These were proper old-school designed hybrid digital/analogue systems made between 1981 and 1984, and it wasn’t long after these came out that the DX7 was introduced, which seems hard to believe really.

The CS70M has for many people been overlooked, or perhaps overshadowed by it’s bigger brother – the CS80, but this instrument has ascended in popularity among aficionados, and we know this synth is highly sought after by those who truly appreciate it.

6 Voice, dual channel (stereo), aftertouch, 30 memories, ring-mod, chorus & Leslie effects, lowpass, highpass, and bandpass VCF, fully programmable and with a 4 channel polyphonic sequencer etc.

Those in the know will already tell you that this is one of the finest analogue polys ever made and a work of audio art in its own right. It shares most of the same technology as the CS80 and many of the characteristics and tonal qualities as well. The other big ‘Hello’ is also the fact you can get really close to the CS80 sound for a lot less money…this makes it even more appealing considering the price.

The UK owner we are selling this magnificent machine for has owned it for over a decade and the synth has been in regular use during that time, with periodic maintenance carried out to keep it in top workmen order. MIDI has already been retrofitted to this CS70M, which adds a lot of value when integrating into a modern studio setup.

The cosmetic condition of this example is extremely good overall with only light user wear & natural ageing to the control surfaces. The faux wood laminate cabinet it in very good order with only a couple of spots where this has been worn. We would grade this is “very good original condition – 8.5 out of 10 cosmetically.’

Operationally, our trusted ‘Yamaha CS Series’ restoration experts – KSR have already carried out a full service on the CS70M, so it’s 100% perfectly working and ready for its new owner.

There are a few demos on YT of these but we like this rather ambient-noodling one from ‘MoreAnalog’ because it demonstrates nicely how the CS70M has the CS80 vibe we are talking about: https://youtu.be/1_jy9ERBTPs

This CS70M is sold through RL Music with a 3-month warranty and can operate on US 110V or EU 220V. Also, we can supply a PDF photocopy of the user manual, and of course, the proprietary Yamaha power-cable.

Price: £6990 GBP

Availability: This CS70M is NO LONGER available for sale – updated on 25th June 2019.

Restoration Status: A full service by KSR has already been carried out (completed in June 2018), so this Jupiter 6 is ready for sale now.

Remarks: This Jupiter 6 came to us as part of a larger collection of vintage synths that we are brokering as part of an Estate clearance. The owner of this JP6 had this beautiful synthesizer maintained with no expense spared, so this synth literally feels and plays like brand new..amazing!

Like all the vintage synths we are Brokering for the estate, this Jupiter 6 is in exemplary condition, and we would describe it as looking ‘nearly new’ to even the closest inspection. Operationally it’s 100% perfectly working and cosmetically pristine – we would grade this as a 9.9 out of 10 cosmetically, Collector-Grade!

The Jupiter 6 has been a hugely popular polysynth since its arrival in 1983 and offers aficionados that beautiful vintage polyphonic analogue Roland sound for very reasonable cost, certainly when compared to its sibling, the Jupiter 8. Yamaha CS80

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our EU client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music as at 28th June 2018, and this CS80 is currently located at our restoration partners – KSR in Surrey, UK.

Servicing Status: A full health-check by KSR has already been carried out (June 2018), so this CS80 is ready for sale now.

Remarks: This CS80 is an exemplary condition example that we sold to our client, the owner, in 2015 when the instrument was subjected to what we term a ‘Total Restoration.’

This CS80 we are offering for sale can be considered among the very finest examples in the world. It is still a 40-year-old instrument with its original keys & buttons etc., but the restoration work invested into it, plus the modifications listed below, mean this is a very special machine, and we have produced only a small number of these very high-level restored examples in the last 16 years for discerning customers around the world.

The CS80 has already been fully cosmetically and operationally restored (Level 2) by KSR. Only RL Music get the ‘’Level 2’ restoration as this includes a much higher level of detailed restoration by KSR, including a full key-bed restoration and point-to-point cabling/solder-contacts integrity checking for the entire loom etc. The Level 2 operational restoration normally costs £4000 GBP (in 2018). We’re pleased to confirm this CS80 already had this work applied of course and is included in the sale price.

The following work has been implemented:

The restoration comprises (not limited to) the total replacement of all the old CMOS Logic IC’s, all of the dual op-amps, voice card, and power supply capacitors & transistors. In addition to this the TKC circuit board, which controls the polyphonic aftertouch of the CS80, is fitted with a set of bypass/decoupling capacitors for each IC to greatly reduce the chance of failure of the touch response circuit. To cap this off, a full calibration is then performed (voltages to within 3 decimal places). The actual list of work is huge, and changes out several hundred components,  and includes a 7 day burn-in test period/stress testing.
All the RL Music supplied CS80s are serviced/restored by the world renown CS80 expert Kent Spong of KSR (Kent Spong Restorations) in London. Sound on Sound magazine (SOS) did an interview article on Kent, which you can find here:

Arp Odyssey Mk3

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music as at 13th June 2018.

Servicing Status: A full service by KSR has already been carried out (June 2018), so the Arp Odyssey Mk3 (model 2821) is available for sale now.

Remarks: We’re very pleased to be able to offer this truly stunning condition example of one of the world best-known & loved vintage synths – much cloned but never surpassed!

This Odyssey Mk3 forms part of a larger collection of vintage synths that we are brokering as part of an Estate clearance. The owner of this Odyssey had this beautiful synthesizer maintained with no expense spared, and at some time in the last 10 years they had ALL the sliders replaced with new original Arp stock (NOS), so this synth literally feels and plays like brand new..amazing!

Cosmetically, this 37+ year-old vintage analogue instrument is in outstanding cosmetic & operational condition and we would rate this as a Collector Grade – 9 out of 10. As mentioned above, KSR has only just fully serviced it, so it’s 100% perfect operationally – this is a real keeper!

The (last produced in 1981) Mk3 Odyssey is arguably the prettiest iteration of the Odyssey family with the striking panel colours and unique design feature with the exposed keys (same as the Quadra), well we think so anyway. The Duophonic Mk3 features the beautiful Arp 4075 discrete four-pole 24dB lowpass/high pass filter. It has CV/Gate/Trig/Filter/Audio/Pedal I/O along the back-plane of the synth, plus the XLR output etc.

This Mk3 Odyssey operates on EU 220V. We do have a user manual (in PDF format). As the instrument is being Brokered through RL Music, it will be sold with a full 3-month warranty and we can ship worldwide.

Demos are available by appointment only.

Price: £1800 GBP.

Availability: This Mk3 Odyssey is now SOLD as at 15th June 2018.

Make Noise B&GS

We are Brokering this Make Noise Black & Gold System for and on behalf of our UK client

Came into stock:  8th May 2018.

Restoration Status: A health-check by KSR will be carried out post-sale.

Remarks: The owner of this system purchased it last year and it has been used on many recordings, some of which were broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The cosmetic condition is ‘as new,’ and operationally it’s perfect – as you would expect from a nearly new machine.

The system is stock except for the following:

It includes the Make Noise Phonogene sampling/looping module. Make Noise have since superseded this with the Morphogene but the Phono is perfectly adept at using audio as either a sound or modulation source. Chop it up as you wish and either play it manually or trigger it from the internal modules or externally.

Our client added Make Noise ‘Brains’ to provide expanded sequencing options and Expert Sleepers ‘Disting Mk 4’ for additional modulation and clocking.

As mentioned, the system is in flawless condition and comes with a few Make Noise blanking panels if needed, but as you can see from the picture below, it is fully populated.

These remarkable systems are retailing for £4.5+ in the UK, so we offer an opportunity here to snag one and save over £900 on a new unit.

KSR Service notes:KSR will carry out a full health-check post-sale, but we know this is a perfectly working system. RL Music will supply this system with a full 3-month warranty.

The owners manual can be found online/downloaded from the following link:

http://www.makenoisemusic.com/content/manuals/sharedsystemmanual_1.10.pdf

Runs on EU 220V via an AC adaptor.

Price: £3590 GBP.

Availability: This Make Noise Black & Gold System is no longer available for sale now (last updated 18th June 2018).

Studio Electronics C...

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from 6th November 2017

Restoration/Servicing Status: KSR to service once sold, and prior to shipping to the new owner.

Remarks: Not a vintage synth, but the Studio Electronics Code 8 has a mighty reputation and is a proper discrete-built analogue poly synth – a serious pro-audio instrument, and a modern classic without any doubt.

This CODE 8 was purchased new buy our client in 2013 from sxpro in London, and was fitted with the 8 x Arp 2600 Filters and the 8 x CS80 Filters upgrade options. It has never been racked, and has sat in his smoke free home studio in the UK since with very little use, hence the decision to sell it to fund new projects.

The synth is in perfect operational and the main control surface is in mint cosmetic condition, as you would expect for something 4 years old, although there are some marks on the large printed logo on the top of the instrument. We will have the synth fully checked over post-sale. It will be supplied with the original owners manual and retail box (as pictured).

This CODE 8 is sold with a 3 month RL Music warranty and runs on either 110V or 220V.

Price: £4500 GBP – price includes the 8 x Arp 2600 and 8 x CS80 Filters.

Availability: This CODE 8 is no longer available for sale – updated 4th July 2018.

Arp 2600 Tonus &...

We are Brokering this Arp 2600 Tonus & 3604-p keyboard for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from 20th March 2018

Restoration/Servicing Status: KSR will fully service this Arp 2600 post-sale.

We present the stunning and iconic early-1970s Arp 2600 semi-modular which contains the sought after (and so-called) pre-lawsuit Moog 4012 style filter. This instrument is around 45 years old and just looks and sounds absolutely amazing.

This very early Arp 2600 Tonus, with original 4012 Filter + 3604P Keyboard controller, features: Semi-normalised – 3 VCOs, 4 pole Lowpass VCF, VCA, Ring Modulator, 2 EGs, sample & hold Noise, Mic Preamp, Spring Reverb, Voltage Processor and Four Octave Keyboard….the list goes on

We previously sold this actual Arp 2600 Tonus back in 2009 to our client we are Brokering it for, so it’s great to see the synth back again looking so beautiful still. The ‘Total Restoration’ work restoration was also carried out in 2009 on this Arp, and covered all cosmetic and operations aspect of the synth, details as follows:

Notes on the cosmetic condition:

The control surfaces/panels on the synth & keyboard were stripped, repainted and screen-printed. The Tolex covering and bright-work was in need of restoration (as is common on the old Arp systems), so KSR re-Tolex’d both units, and replaced all the exterior nickel-plated components. The Keys on the 3604-P were in good shape, so where kept original to retain that authentic vintage ageing across the key-bed.

Notes on the restoration:

Aside the repainting, screen-printing, re-Tolexing and replacement of the exterior brightwork mentioned above, the operational restoration on the 2600 was extensive, and mostly all Arp 2600 systems we see these days need this level of attention. KSR had undertaken a complete ground-up rebuild of the electronics with full test and calibrations and PSU rebuild etc. Each and every slider was split apart, cleaned and rebuilt, every jack cleaned & tested, and a system-wide check of all connectors, and solder joints etc. The keyboard was stripped an completely overhauled, and new busting fitted etc. Where possible, all the original parts were retained to ensure continuity and authenticity but some ageing components like power conditioning caps have been replaced, but only were absolutely necessary.

In the last 9 years since the Arp 2600 was restored by us, the synth was used and kept at home with our UK client, who has taken great care of it. The cosmetic and operational condition is perfect and the same as the day we handed it to them.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the most iconic vintage synths ever made, and the price has been agreed with our client to keep it very competitive, and incomparable to any Arp 2600 being sold anywhere in the world right now…it’s a Total Restoration RL Music vintage synth, after all!

The original 3604P keyboard is useful, and is a historically correct partner for this model of 2600, and has had a modification to the output connector as you can see in the pictures. KSR actually implemented the DIN socket mod, which is a much more reliable connection than the propriety Arp block connector which was always a weak link in the chain we have found. in reality, the 3604-P offers limited access to the extensive inputs into the main synth, so to get the most out of the 2600 we would recommend using a multi-channel Midi to CV device like the Kenton Pro-2000 which can give you 3 note polyphonic control if needed. We can supply a Kenton Pro-200 but is not included in the sales price below, so please ask us for prices.

These outstanding synthesizers are hard to find in decent condition, so here is a rare opportunity to own a superb fully professionally restored example that will only appreciate in value and add something special to your studio.

Supplied with all (restored/Tolexed) lids and DIN CV/Gate interconnect cable. The Arp runs on EU 220V via a standard IEC power connector. We will also supply an Arp 2600 owners manual (PDF).

As with all Brokered Sales, the Arp 2600 will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner, although this synth really only needs a ‘health-check’ as it’s in such good condition throughout. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full 3-month warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The servicing is carried out as a priority once the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.

Price: £7990 GBP.

Availability: This Arp 2600 Tonus is now SOLD as at 23rd March 2018.

EMS Synth A Mk2

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our customer

Came into stock: October 2017.

Restoration Status: A full service by KSR has already been carried out (completed on 1st November 2017), so this instrument is ready for sale now.

We’re delighted to be able to offer an EMS Synthi A Mk2 to our customers who want to experience a vintage EMS but don’t need the extra expense/facility of the KS (Keyboard/Sequencer) that the AKS model offers.

Identical to the Synthi AKS (synth) in sound & operation, the Synthi A is the ultimate portable synth, packaged in the same Spartanite case and offering the endless programming possibilities through the matrix panel interface. EMS originally named the Synth A the “Portabella” which followed the naming conventions of its early synths like the “Putney (VCS3 Mk1)” and Cricklewood (DK1) keyboard etc.

The EMS Synthi A was first brought to the market by EMS the same year as Moog launched the Model D Minimoog to the world – an auspicious year for synth fans indeed! This example we are offering for sale is a later revision, an Mk2, and was manufactured during the Datamonics company ownership period which would have been between 1979 to 1982. The Mk2 Synth A is usually identifiable but the power-conditioning components used internally, but the metal silver anodised panel is another way to quickly identify them, as the earlier (Mk1) versions were usually painted (white), although there may have been some cross-over.

Provenance
Our client literally rescued this Synthi A from a London school back in the late 1990s who were throwing it out, and the synth bears the marks of this being a genuine educational tool for children. You will see from the anodised metal panel that it was been hand-inscribed with “ILEA” and other markings. Most people in the UK would recognise that as meaning “Inner London Education Authority” – so this synth has faithfully served fresh young minds in its time, and perhaps even enthused a few (like we were back in the day) to take their love of synthesis further into adulthood….bravo!

Our client has used this instrument regularly since the 90s and even gigged with it for a few years in London, so this synth is not a ‘glass-case’ collector’s item by far, but to many people that brings its own appeal and means it has a genuine evidenced history & story to tell.
_______

At some time in the life of the instrument, an IEC power socket was fitted to the synth. The implementation is good. We assume that the use of the usual proprietary EMS power-cable was a problem for the school as these easily get lost, so someone fitted the IEC to it.

As this instrument is nearly 40 years old, and quite commonly, it did not come to us any significant service history from our client. We commissioned KSR to carry out an extensive ground-up overhaul to bring it up to a perfect operating specification, whilst ensuring its authenticity is preserved as much as possible. Electronic instruments of this age need a deep level of restoration, but we approach this kind of work sympathetically.

The restoration time & resources invested into this instrument by KSR include:

>Strip-down of panels & Spartanite case.
>Spartanite case deep-cleaned, re-finished & all hardware cleaned.
>Control Panels deep-cleaned.
>Every control component (potentiometers/switches/matrix panel), cleaned & lubricated
>Power-Supply re-capped & calibrated.
>Full system-wide calibration & soak-test.

The above restorative work is the minimum we asked KSR to carry out as they would all need this level of attention due to their age, but In addition to the above, the following work can also be carried out by request. This is a costed option, so is not included in the sales price listed at the bottom of this page:

*VCO stabilisation modification implemented in line with EMS guidelines = £400 GBP

*This Synthi A comes with a full complement of matrix pins, although to be honest, these original 38-year-old pins are well past there best so we would recommend you also purchase a brand new (full) set of matrix pins (supplied from EMS) for = £250 GBP

Our client did not ask us to get get the panels re-anodised/screen-printed as they always felt it’s history was an intrinsic part of the life of the synth, so it comes as it was used and intended for – an educational instrument in the 1970s with a genuine provenance. However, if you prefer to purchase this Synth A and then want to have the panels refinished (re-anodised/screen-printed) to look like new, then this is possible of course, so please contact us for a quote to have this carried out.

This instrument operates on EU 220V. The instrument is sold with a 3-month warranty from RL Music and we will also include a user manual in PDF format and a UK-plug IEC power cable.

Price: £7200 GBP.

Availability: This Synthi A Mk2 is now SOLD on reserve as at 28th March 2018.

EMS Synthi 2013

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: Arrived at RL Music on 21st February 2018

Restoration Status: This nearly new EMS Synthi A is in perfect working condition and KSR have already given it a ‘health-check’ in the last couple of days, so this instrument is ready for sale now.

We’re delighted to offer a rare chance to buy a recently manufactured EMS Synthi A that Robin Wood at EMS only assembled in October 2013 (we have a copy of the original receipt). This Synthi A has also been fully modified by EMS with a suite of upgrades (done at the time of manufacture). As many of you know, the waiting list to buy one of these exquisite machines from Robin has been running at around 12 years, but we spoke to him recently and he confirmed that production is now finishing due to the Spartanite cases no longer being available.

This late 2013 model (serial number 45643) sounds identical & works the same way a vintage Synthi does, plus it has all the advantages of being a nearly new machine! It’s immaculate as you would expect and works flawlessly. This instrument has only had 2 owners since 2013, this first only having it for a couple of months (unused) before emigrating and selling it to our client. Our client found it did not suit their own style of music, so it’s barely had any use at all so it needs to find a new home.

A note of the EMS implemented Mods:
Oscillator Synth on Osc2
Voltage Controlled Shape Osc1 & Osc2
Filter mode switchable 18/24 db/oct
Filter ‘unslew’ switchable on filters CV
Buffered external gate input

Included in the sale (pictured below):
Original EMS Synthi User Manual
Proprietary EMS power-cable
Full set of Matrix Pins
2 x Matrix pin-to-3.5mm cables
Cinch-Jones-to-3.5mm loom

This instrument operates on EU 220V. The instrument is sold with a 3-month warranty from RL Music.

Price: £7990 GBP.
