Korg PS-3200 –...

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from January 2025

Servicing Status:

KSR had undertaken an extensive cosmetic and operational restoration, with the project spanning several years but mostly completed by the end of 2024, thanks to the fine efforts of Kent Spong.

Remarks:

We have decided to sell our complete system Korg PS-3200.  This instrument forms a part of the RL Music Vintage Synthesizer Collection.  We have managed to keep some of the very best examples of Vintage Synthesizers that come through our business over the last 22 years which we kept for our pleasure and interest. Whilst having a privileged position as a specialist dealer in this genre of equipment, we managed to hang on to particular instruments that were interesting and inspiring to us.  This Korg PS-3200 is among 40 instruments we own, and it has been the subject of a full and very detailed cosmetic and operational restoration by our trusted vintage synth tech, Kent Spong of KSR.

It’s generally accepted that Korg only produced around 200 of the PS-3200, a number that is difficult to verify with any accuracy, but regardless of it being 100 or 500 units made, such limited quantities make this model a very rare hand-made instrument by any definition.

Due to the nature of limited production run instruments like this Korg PS-3200, certain aspects to the sale will be unique, so we have tried our best here to fully represent the instrument with all the information we have available and honestly and acutely describe it. We encourage any prospective buyer to ensure you have all you need to make an informed decision to purchase it, so we are available to field any enquiry you may have, but we hope the following information covers all the pertinent details on this very special instrument.

Provenance:

We purchased this PS-3200 from a UK seller (an expert user) in 2015, and we collected it in person from their studio in the South of England. At the time of the sale, the Korg was fully working but had not been professionally serviced so we decided to add it to our Korg ‘PS’ collection as this completed the full lineup and then decide later on what we wanted to do with it. We do not have any prior history about this PS-3200, but like most examples of this model we have seen over the years, they are generally well looked after, robust and reliable hand-made instruments by Korg.

The overall condition of the PS-3200 was all original and very good but it was showing signs of wear to all the cosmetic surfaces and the faux wooden cabinet, wear that was indicative of a 35+-year-old (at the time) synthesizer, so after some consideration, we decided to go for a full operational and cosmetic restoration.  This kind of very high-level restoration was something we used to do quite a lot in the past but demand for highly restored vintage synths has declined in recent times due to the accelerating prices for vintage gear in any condition, so we found that prices have dominated people’s decisions rather than the added value (and cost) that comes with restoration work. However, as we owned this PS-3200 for our private collection then the huge restoration effort and costs were a personal choice, and it most certainly added value to this particular example.

System Configuration:

PS-3200 – Main frame

PS-3010 – Keyboard Controller

PS-3030 – Remote

PS-3001 – Cable

Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kit Fitted

This particular PS-3200 comes with the extremely rare PS-3030 Remote, which was a unique solution for live-playing musicians to have access to the PS-3200 patch memories. It’s rather a quirky device through modern eyes but in the context of a synth player in 1978, this was a remarkable high-tech, ground-breaking facility for a polyphonic synthesiser for its time.

We purchased a brand new MIDI retrofit kit from Kenton Electronics UK for this PS-3200, so KSR installed this into the Korg at the time the operational restoration work was being carried out.

Historical Context:

The Korg PS-3200 is a historically significant synthesizer that emerged during a transformative period in electronic music. Here’s a detailed historical context for its development and impact:

  1. The Synthesizer Revolution of the 1970s

The 1970s were a golden age for synthesizer innovation. As electronic music gained popularity, musicians and producers sought more expressive and versatile instruments. Early synthesizers, like the Moog Modular systems and ARP 2600, were groundbreaking but often monophonic (capable of playing only one note at a time). The demand for polyphonic synthesizers—capable of playing multiple notes simultaneously—grew, leading to the development of instruments like the Korg PS-3200.

2. Korg’s Entry into the Synthesizer Market

Korg, founded in 1962 by Tsutomu Katoh and Tadashi Osanai, initially focused on producing rhythm machines and electronic keyboards. By the mid-1970s, Korg had established itself as a serious competitor in the synthesizer market with instruments like the Korg MiniKorg 700 and the Korg MaxiKorg. The PS-3200, released in 1978, was part of Korg’s PS (Polyphonic Synthesizer) series, which also included the PS-3100 and PS-3300. These instruments were designed to meet the growing demand for polyphonic capabilities in a professional studio and live performance context.

3. Technological Advancements in the PS-3200

The PS-3200 was a technological marvel for its time. Key features included:

48-note polyphony: Unprecedented for an analogue synthesizer, allowing for rich, layered sounds.

Programmable presets: Unlike many analogue synthesizers of the era, the PS-3200 allowed users to save and recall sounds, a feature that was highly innovative.

Unison detuning: This feature allowed for thick, chorused sounds that became a hallmark of the PS-3200’s sonic character.

These advancements made the PS-3200 one of the most advanced synthesizers of its time, competing with other high-end polyphonic synthesizers like the Yamaha GX-1 and the Oberheim Polyphonic Synthesizer.

4. Limited Production and Exclusivity

The PS-3200 was a hand-built instrument, requiring significant labor and expertise to assemble. This, combined with its high cost limited its production would have had a niche appeal to buyers in the late 1970’s. As a result, it was primarily used by professional musicians, studios, and wealthy enthusiasts. Its exclusivity and advanced features contributed to its legendary status.

5. Influence on Music and Culture

The PS-3200 was used by prominent artists and producers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its lush, analogue sound made it ideal for creating pads, strings, and atmospheric textures. While it was not as widely adopted as some other synthesizers of the era (like the Minimoog or Prophet-5), it had a significant impact on the development of electronic music and synthesizer design.

6. Legacy and Historical Significance

The Korg PS-3200 represents a pivotal moment in the history of synthesizers. It showcased the potential of polyphonic analogue synthesis and programmable presets, paving the way for future innovations in electronic music technology. Today, the PS-3200 is a highly sought-after collector’s item, valued for its rarity, historical importance, and unique sound.

Conclusion

The Korg PS-3200 is a symbol of the creativity and ambition of the late 1970s synthesizer industry. Its advanced features and limited production have cemented its place as a classic in the history of electronic music, influencing both the technology and the artistry of sound synthesis.

About Restoration & Servicing:

This Korg PS-3200 has been subjected to what we used to term as ‘Total Restoration,’ so a complete operational and cosmetic overhaul plus brand new cabinets were produced by Ross Lamond in solid Walnut for the mainframe, PS-3010 Keyboard Controller and the end-cheeks for the PS-3030 Remote device. The original faux chipboard and synthetic veneer cabinets were donated to Ross Lamond at the time of manufacture so he could correctly replicate the cabinets, these are no longer available, but the beautiful solid Walnut cabinets are stunning.

Our good friend and highly regarded vintage synth tech – Kent Spong at KSR,  was commissioned to undertake the restoration work, but there were several specialist suppliers involved in the restoration, so here are the highlights of what has been done to this PS-3200.

  • Complete disassembly of all control surfaces, so all potentiometers and jack socks are removed from all panels by KSR.
  • mainframe control surface, PS-3010 Keyboard and PS-3030 Remote panels sent to a professional powder coating business in the UK.
  • Post-powder-coating, the panels were hand-delivered to our printing specialist in the UK to have all the screen printing carried out. All the artwork for this was custom produced and paid for by us and our printer carried out all the work.
  • Walnut Wood Cabinets collected by hand from Lamond Design (no longer trading) and delivered to KSR for preparation – staining and waxing etc.
  • A MIDI Retrofit Kit was purchased from Kenton Electronics.
  • Brand new 1/4 inch Switchcraft jack sockets for both the mainframe and PS-3010 Controller
  • Brand new power socket on the mainframe control panel.
  • Once all the various parts were ready from our restoration partners (above) then everything was delivered to KSR for assembly:

– Re-capped the entire PS-3200 with new capacitors, inc PSU

– Replace all 1/4 inch jack sockets with new Switchcraft sockets

– Cleaned all PCB edge-connections

– Reassembly of all control surface components

– Install Kenton MIDI Kit-Finalising – system-wide testing and calibrations

-The card-edge connectors on this PS-3200 were all in excellent condition so the decision was taken not to replace these during the restoration.

KSR do not produce restoration reports but the above works carried out are extensive and the final product is more akin to a brand new instrument. We don’t know how much labour was involved in this restoration project as a whole but with all the parties involved, it’s likely hundreds of hours and (we know) thousands of £-pounds.

For many discerning buyers, the investment we have made into this PS-3200 is highly valued, and at the time of producing this document, we are not aware of any comparable PS-3200 being offered for sale in the world.

This Korg PS-3200 came from the factory with a manually switchable power supply, so this can operate on JPN 100v, US 110V or EU 220V.  In the UK, we have this set to 220V.

We do not have any original user or service manuals but will provide a PDF copy of the user manual.

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this PS-3200 worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so are subject to quotation.  We intend to have the Korg professionally packaged by us to ensure maximum safety during transport.  This would require custom-sized export-grade boxes and associated packing materials, which would be ordered from our packaging partner, specifically tailored to the unique physical dimensions of the components that make up this system, so the consignment would be for 2 boxes minimum. We don’t think it would need to be palletised, but it will be fully insured for the sale price below, and a customer insurance policy will be required for the consignment (subject to quotation).

Unless specified by the buyer, we would not remove all the PCBs and ship these separately, but this can be accommodated if required but this will add additional packaging materials and labour costs, plus that option will impact the post-sale warranty terms.

The packaging solution will be tailored to the buyers’ needs, so please speak to us about your preferences at the time of ordering and we will provide a solution and quotation that meets your requirements.

Alternatively, UK buyers can collect the PS-3200 from us in Reading, Berkshire, or we might be able to arrange a dedicated delivery in person, subject to the destination address & quotation. We are happy to discuss your requirements so please email us if you have any questions on the logistics and/or need a quote.

Sales Price:

£25,000 GBP

As this Korg PS-3200 is owned by RL Music, VAT is applicable on the sale of this to UK buyers. Packing & shipping are also subject to VAT @ 20% should you need the goods shipped to you.

Payment:

Due to the values involved, we can only accept payment by bank transfer, details of which will be supplied in our invoice.  International Bank Wire Transfer is therefore accepted.

Arp 2600 V4.0 + 3620

We are Brokering this vintage Arp 2600 + 3620 duo-phonic keyboard for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from November 2024

Servicing Status:  A full service was carried out by Kent Spong at KSR in August 2024.

Remarks:

We present the excellent condition vintage Arp 2600 semi-modular which contains the sought after (and so-called) post-lawsuit Moog 4072 style filter. This instrument is at least 50 years old (built between 1972 and 1974) looks beautifully vintage and sounds amazing.

This Arp 2600 is a version 2600P v4.0, with the post-lawsuit 4072 Filter + 3620 Duo-Phonic Keyboard controller. It features Semi-normalised – 3 VCOs (type 4027-1), 4 pole Lowpass VCF, VCA, Ring Modulator, 2 EGs, sample & hold Noise, Mic Preamp, 17-inch Spring Reverb, Voltage Processor and Four Octave Keyboard….the list goes on.

This Arp system has been in the ownership of our client for only around 5 years having got it from the original owner who purchased it new. This 2600 has never been gigged and is 100% original, so has all its original tolex and original circuitry.  When our Client purchased this Arp, it had been stored for several years so KSR was commissioned to carry out a complete overhaul to get it up to spec and ready for sale through us.

Buying a vintage ARP 2600 synthesizer is a fantastic choice for several reasons, especially if you’re passionate about analogue synthesizers and classic sound design. Here’s why:

1. Classic Analog Sound

  • The ARP 2600 has a rich, warm analogue tone that is nearly impossible to replicate digitally. Its oscillators, filters, and modulators create a sound that is both iconic and versatile.
  • Many famous musicians and sound designers have used the ARP 2600, making it a staple in the history of synthesizers.

2. Historical and Collectible Value

  • Released in the early 1970s, it is a piece of synthesizer history. Owning one is like having a relic of the golden era of analogue synthesis.
  • As vintage gear, its value often increases over time, making it not just a tool but also an investment.

3. Hands-On Creativity

  • The semi-modular design lets you patch your signal paths while still being usable without patch cables. This strikes a perfect balance between modular flexibility and ease of use.
  • The tactile interface encourages experimentation and sound design.

4. Build Quality

  • Vintage ARP 2600s were built to last, with solid construction and high-quality components. Properly maintained, they can continue to produce amazing sounds for decades.

5. Unique Features

  • Features like the built-in spring reverb and iconic ARP filter (which varies depending on the production year) make it distinct from modern synthesizers.
  • The integration of pre-patched configurations and modular flexibility offers unmatched creative opportunities.

6. Cultural Significance

  • It has been used in countless classic tracks across genres and is famous for being the voice of R2-D2 in Star Wars. Owning one connects you to this legacy.

Cosmetic Condition:

The control surfaces/panels on the synth & keyboard have been deep cleaned and are in outstanding condition and retain all original slider-caps and controls. All the cabinets/lids for both the synth and keyboard are covered with the original factory-fitted tolex, which is all in excellent condition. These 50-year-old portable semi-modular synthesisers are hard to find in original condition like this so it’s a fantastic opportunity to buy a genuine vintage 2600 that’s in factory spec.

The bright work (nickel-plated components like catches and hinges) are all original and all show a perfectly aged patina.

Notes on the Servicing:

Kent at KSR has gone through the entire synth and keyboard. Many original parts were retained to ensure continuity and authenticity but some ageing components like power conditioning caps have been replaced, but only were necessary. all the sliders and potentiometers had been deep cleaned and a full function test of every PCB.

The keyboard was stripped and completely overhauled, and new neoprene bushes were fitted etc.

The original 3620 keyboard is certainly useful and is the historically correct partner for this model of 2600. The 3620 offers duo-phonic control and pretty decent access to the extensive inputs into the main synth, so to get the most out of the 2600 we would recommend using a multi-channel Midi to CV device like the Kenton Pro-2000 which can give you 3-note polyphonic control if needed, although any 1V/Oct analogue controller/sequencer etc., will work fine.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the most iconic vintage synths ever made with its, completely original control surface cosmetics, original factory-fitted tolex and the unmodified and paired synth and keyboard. The sales price has been agreed with our client to keep it very competitive and by far the best value comparable example in the UK and Europe at the time of posting this page.

These outstanding vintage semi-modular synthesizers are hard to find in decent condition, so here is a rare opportunity to own an original example that will only appreciate and add something special to your studio/home.

Supplied with all lids, OE keyboard CV/Gate interconnect cable and UK type- to-3-pin proprietary power cable. The Arp runs on EU 220~240V.  We also supply the original colour-printed Arp 2600 owner’s manual (pictured below).

All our vintage instruments are sold with a 3-month warranty, please see our Terms & Conditions for full details.

Packing & Shipping:

We can ship this 2600 worldwide, although the packing, shipping & insurance costs are not included in the sale price below, so they are subject to quotation.  The synth is located with us in Reading, so you are welcome to collect it from us if you prefer.

There may be short delays in getting the packaging materials produced for shipping as they are custom ordered for the specific dimensions of each instrument.  We are happy to discuss your requirements, so please email us if you have any questions about the logistics and/or need a quote.

We present a fabulous opportunity to own a stunning condition late production version Arp 2600 that comes partnered with its companion keyboard controller, the 3620. In addition, this beautiful 2600 is complete with the 1621 Sequencer. This production version contains the post-lawsuit Moog 4072 style filter. This instrument is at least 43 years old (likely built in 1979).

Background:

Our client purchased this Arp 2600/3602 and 1621 Sequencer together brand new from Chase Music in Manchester on 16th January 1980 – we have the original sales receipt, although will not publish this as it contains personal data, but it will be provided to the buyer of this Arp combo. The provenance is therefore perfect for this 43+ year old equipment.

Our client had assembled a modest & much valued vintage synth collection over the years, all of which we have the honour for selling for him as he has made the difficult decision to let these instruments pass to new owners/custodians. These beauty vintage Arp instruments have all been cherished, played & enjoyed only ever at home, during his 43 years of ownership.

Servicing:

As mentioned in the introduction, the Arp 2600 Synth, 3602 Keyboard and 1621 Sequencer, all went through a complete professional service by Jim McKenna Singing Cat Services in April/May 2023, as part of the pre-sale diligence in getting it ready for sale and be in top operational condition for the new owner. We have been provided with a service report against the works carried out at Singing Cat Services, so please clock the link below so you can open up the PDF:

Singing Cat Services Service Report – Arp 2600 & 3620 #2602/0208 PDF.

Singing Cat Services Service Report – Arp 1621 Sequencer #1621-01121 PDF.

Also, our client had James Walker at Synth Repair Services carry out a minor service service on the 2600 on 18th April 2016. We have the original receipt so will provide this to the new owner pos-sale but again, we will not publish this online as it contains personal data,

Condition:

We consider all three instructs to be in outstanding condition, stunning, but you can decide yourself by looking at the pictures below. As province goes it does not get any better than a single owner instruments, and they are all 100% completely original machines, so no mods, so true survivors and highly collectable like this.

The Tolex covering on both the synth and keyboard is in exception condition with only some tine blemishes in places, and the nick plated fixtures and fitting are all present and have the expect patine for an instrument of this age. The console surfaces for both instruments is exemplary and all the original control knobs and slider caps are present.

The 1621 Sequencer is also in absolutely top cosmetic condition, probably the very best example we have seen, and is also equipped with all it’s original slider caps and program buttons, which are so bright and white they look like new!

The only proviso on these OE cables are that they are at least 43years old so may not be reliable. We do not cover these parts under any warranty against defects, so we would recommend you purchase some new 3.5mm cables for a more reliable operation as we consider these parts as consumables in real terms.

In addition to the patching cables,  there are 2 foot-pedals included, one is an OE Arp pedal and the other is a third-party device. As with the cables, we do not cover these items under warranty but they are included within the sale as a courtesy.

Health-Check:

As this Arp 2600 3260 & 1621 Sequencer were serviced in May this year, so all items does not need any further attention, but as part of our post-sale process, we will ask Kent Spong at KSR to carry out a health-check on the Arps once the sale has completed.  This will add a couple of weeks to the post-sale timeline.

Arp 2600 v3.0 + 3604...

We are Brokering this Arp 2600 & 3604-p keyboard for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from 22nd November 2019

Servicing Status: KSR have already fully serviced this Arp 2600 & 3604-P in November 2019, so they’re ready for sale now.

Remarks: We present the stunning and iconic Arp 2600 semi-modular which contains the sought after (and so-called) pre-lawsuit Moog 4012 style filter. This instrument is at least 45 years old (built between 1972 to 1974) looks beautifully vintage and sounds absolutely amazing.

This Arp 2600 is a version 2600P v3.0, with original 4012 Filter + 3604P Keyboard controller. It features Semi-normalised – 3 VCOs (type 4027-1), 4 pole Lowpass VCF, VCA, Ring Modulator, 2 EGs, sample & hold Noise, Mic Preamp, 17 inch Spring Reverb, Voltage Processor and Four Octave Keyboard….the list goes on.

This Arp combo has been in the ownership of our client for 30+ years but has been stored for quite a while, so KSR were commissioned to carry out a complete overhaul to get it up to spec and ready for sale through us. Details of the work carried out as follows:

Notes on the cosmetic condition:

The control surfaces/panels on the synth & keyboard have been deep cleaned. To retain authenticity, the original tolex was left untouched but deep-cleaned, and actually is in pretty good shape considering this instrument is 45+ years old. The bright-work (nickel-plated components like catches and hinges) were improved using hand polishing techniques but they are predicability showing signs of ageing, with a natural patina, but we actually feel this is part of the charm of an un-cosmetically restored example, and to some owners, an important character to keep original.

Notes on the restoration:

The operational restoration on this 2600 & keyboard has been extensive, and mostly all Arp 2600 systems we see these days need this level of attention. KSR had undertaken a complete ground-up rebuild of the electronics with full test and calibrations and PSU rebuild etc. Each and every slider was split apart, cleaned and rebuilt, every jack cleaned & tested, and a system-wide check of all connectors, and solder joints etc. The keyboard was stripped and completely overhauled, and new neoprene bushes fitted etc. Where possible, all the original parts were retained to ensure continuity and authenticity but some ageing components like power conditioning caps have been replaced, but only were absolutely necessary.

The original 3604-P keyboard is certainly useful, and not only is it the historically correct partner for this model of 2600, but also the exact serial number match, so they were paired when manufactured (see serial# picture below). in reality, the 3604-P offers limited access to the extensive inputs into the main synth, so to get the most out of the 2600 we would recommend using a multi-channel Midi to CV device like the Kenton Pro-2000 which can give you 3 note polyphonic control if needed, although any 1V/Oct analogue controller/sequencer etc., will work fine. We can supply a Kenton Pro-200 but is not included in the sales price below, so please ask us for prices.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the most iconic vintage synths ever made, original cosmetics and paired synth and keyboard. The sales price has been agreed with our client to keep it very competitive and by far the best value example in the UK and Europe at the time of posting this page.

These outstanding synthesizers are hard to find in decent condition, so here is a rare opportunity to own an original example that will only appreciate in value and add something special to your studio/home.

Supplied with all lids, keyboard CV/Gate interconnect & US 3-pin proprietary power-cable. The Arp runs on US 110V (it cannot be converted to run 220V), so we are including in the sale a suitable step-down transformer so you can operate this in the UK/EU. We also supply an Arp 2600 owners manual (PDF).

Price: £7990 GBP.

Availability: This Arp 2600 & 3604-P are now SOLD, as at 14th January 2020.

BUY THIS ARP 2600

EMS Synthi Mk2

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music as at 9th January 2019.

Servicing Status: A full health-check by KSR will be carried out post-sale but this Synthi was fully serviced by EMS in October 2016.

Remarks: A fabulous opportunity to own a vintage EMS Synthi, and this example is in super all original condition throughout.

This Synthi (serial #4656KS so a Mk2 version) was purchased brand new by our client in 1973 so they are the original and only owner of this instrument. When purchased, this was a (complete) Synthi AKS model and therefore had the Keyboard Sequencer (KS) controller, but our client sold that some decades ago so it no longer comes included with this, hence it’s been advertised as only a Synthi, or Synthi A. There have not been any modifications made to this Synthi so it’s factory spec. One advantage to it being an ex-AKS model is that the PSU is rated to easily run external devices like the KS or DK series controllers.

Since 1973, this Synthi has been in regular home use only, and the owner decided to have a detailed service carried out by Robin at EMS in late 2016. We have the original EMS service receipt which we have scanned and made available to view below so you can see what was carried out.

The cosmetic condition is very good indeed, with only some wear to the screen-print along the matrix, which is not unusual. Both Spartanite cases are in excellent condition. The nickel latches & hinges show signs of oxidisation, which again is normal to see on a 45+ year-old synth, although they easily could be improved with some light restorative work if needed. In all, the instrument shows normal signs of ageing and has not any overt cosmetic restoration carried out, which we know for many people is important in terms of retaining authenticity.

Included in the sale (pictured), is a nearly-new Kenton Pro-Solo Mk2 with PSU and required cables to carry CV/Gate/Filter (cinch-jones connector) to operate this Synthi via MIDI. These are all included in the price, and worth around £200 GBP if purchased new/separately.

These iconic and truly amazing pure analogue music instruments are in great demand by professional users, and prices are being driven up fast on the second-hand market around the world, so now might be a good time to invest in one before they become ‘Vintage Buchla or RA Moog Modular’ prices.

We can’t think of a more iconic, truly portable synthesizer ever being made, and even today the design of the Synthi is considered a triumph of feature and form…incredible.

This EMS Synthi comes with way more than a full set of matrix pins, 35 in total, and 16 of them are brand new (all red), so the pin situation is covered.

KSR will give this Synthi a full health-check post-sale, but we have tested it extensively and can confirm it’s working perfectly, as it should really as Robin did all the refurbishment work only a couple of years ago.

This Synthi is set to operate on EU 220V~240V (front-panel setting). We were also supplied with the original EMS ‘Education manual’ for this model and the proprietary EMS power-cable (with UK 3-pin plug fitted).

As the instrument is being Brokered through RL Music, it will be sold with a full 3-month warranty and we can ship worldwide.

Demos are available by appointment only.

As with all Brokered Sales, the synth will be fully health-checked post-sale, before it’s sent to its new owner. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The work is carried out as a priority once the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.

Sales Price: £9027 GBP.

Availability: This EMS Synthi is available now SOLD, as at 11th February 2020.

Roland 700 Lab

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our customer.

Came into stock: Arrived at RL Music on 28th November 2018.

Servicing Status: A full service by KSR will be carried post-sale.

Remarks: A very rare opportunity to own stunning vintage
modular system from the Roland 700 lineage – the System 700 Lab.

This is a very powerful 3 oscillator normalised system with 1/4 inch jack In/Out for expanded sound creation possibilities and is based entirely on the system architecture of the full System 700. Unusually, we also have a full Roland System 700 for sale at the moment – so you can see that the Lab is the same size as one of the lower wing cabinets.

This is a standard configuration system, so has not been modified from its original factory specification, and the serial number is 660042. This contains all the basic modules necessary for a professional system. It has 3 x VCO, 1 x VCF, 1 x VCA, 1 x LFO, 2 x ADSR EG, Noise (white & pink), Ring Mod, S/H and a Mixer.

The 700 Lab is in excellent all original condition, with only light wear to the modules surfaces, although there is some oxidisation to the anodising, which we are seeing as normal for these 40+-year-old instruments. The Tolex covering and chromed/nickel-plated parts are all intact and in excellent order, although there are a couple of small indentations on the back of the cabinet along the edges.

We would rate this as a collectors condition example – 9.5 out of 10. KSR has just fully serviced the system so it’s 100% perfect operationally.

This is a 1V/Oct system that can be accessed via any suitable CV/Gate controller or MIDI to CV device. To get the most out of the 700 Lab we would recommend using a multi-channel Midi to CV device like the Kenton Pro-2000 which can give you 3 note polyphonic control if needed. We can supply a Kenton Pro-200 but is not included in the sales price below, so please ask us for prices.

This System 700 Lab is sold with our normal 3-month warranty and runs on EU 220V. There was no user documentation supplied by the owner, but we will supply a copy of the System 700 Synthesizer Instruction Manual in PDF format.

As with all Brokered Sales, the synth will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The servicing is carried out as a priority once the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.

Price: £18,600 GBP.

Availability: This System 700 Lab is not currently available.

Arp 2600 Tonus &...

We are Brokering this Arp 2600 Tonus & 3604-p keyboard for and on behalf of our UK client.

Came into stock: Available from RL Music from 20th March 2018

Restoration/Servicing Status: KSR will fully service this Arp 2600 post-sale.

We present the stunning and iconic early-1970s Arp 2600 semi-modular which contains the sought after (and so-called) pre-lawsuit Moog 4012 style filter. This instrument is around 45 years old and just looks and sounds absolutely amazing.

This very early Arp 2600 Tonus, with original 4012 Filter + 3604P Keyboard controller, features: Semi-normalised – 3 VCOs, 4 pole Lowpass VCF, VCA, Ring Modulator, 2 EGs, sample & hold Noise, Mic Preamp, Spring Reverb, Voltage Processor and Four Octave Keyboard….the list goes on

We previously sold this actual Arp 2600 Tonus back in 2009 to our client we are Brokering it for, so it’s great to see the synth back again looking so beautiful still. The ‘Total Restoration’ work restoration was also carried out in 2009 on this Arp, and covered all cosmetic and operations aspect of the synth, details as follows:

Notes on the cosmetic condition:

The control surfaces/panels on the synth & keyboard were stripped, repainted and screen-printed. The Tolex covering and bright-work was in need of restoration (as is common on the old Arp systems), so KSR re-Tolex’d both units, and replaced all the exterior nickel-plated components. The Keys on the 3604-P were in good shape, so where kept original to retain that authentic vintage ageing across the key-bed.

Notes on the restoration:

Aside the repainting, screen-printing, re-Tolexing and replacement of the exterior brightwork mentioned above, the operational restoration on the 2600 was extensive, and mostly all Arp 2600 systems we see these days need this level of attention. KSR had undertaken a complete ground-up rebuild of the electronics with full test and calibrations and PSU rebuild etc. Each and every slider was split apart, cleaned and rebuilt, every jack cleaned & tested, and a system-wide check of all connectors, and solder joints etc. The keyboard was stripped an completely overhauled, and new busting fitted etc. Where possible, all the original parts were retained to ensure continuity and authenticity but some ageing components like power conditioning caps have been replaced, but only were absolutely necessary.

In the last 9 years since the Arp 2600 was restored by us, the synth was used and kept at home with our UK client, who has taken great care of it. The cosmetic and operational condition is perfect and the same as the day we handed it to them.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the most iconic vintage synths ever made, and the price has been agreed with our client to keep it very competitive, and incomparable to any Arp 2600 being sold anywhere in the world right now…it’s a Total Restoration RL Music vintage synth, after all!

The original 3604P keyboard is useful, and is a historically correct partner for this model of 2600, and has had a modification to the output connector as you can see in the pictures. KSR actually implemented the DIN socket mod, which is a much more reliable connection than the propriety Arp block connector which was always a weak link in the chain we have found. in reality, the 3604-P offers limited access to the extensive inputs into the main synth, so to get the most out of the 2600 we would recommend using a multi-channel Midi to CV device like the Kenton Pro-2000 which can give you 3 note polyphonic control if needed. We can supply a Kenton Pro-200 but is not included in the sales price below, so please ask us for prices.

These outstanding synthesizers are hard to find in decent condition, so here is a rare opportunity to own a superb fully professionally restored example that will only appreciate in value and add something special to your studio.

Supplied with all (restored/Tolexed) lids and DIN CV/Gate interconnect cable. The Arp runs on EU 220V via a standard IEC power connector. We will also supply an Arp 2600 owners manual (PDF).

As with all Brokered Sales, the Arp 2600 will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner, although this synth really only needs a ‘health-check’ as it’s in such good condition throughout. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full 3-month warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The servicing is carried out as a priority once the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.

Price: £7990 GBP.

Availability: This Arp 2600 Tonus is now SOLD as at 23rd March 2018.

EMS Synthi 2013

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: Arrived at RL Music on 21st February 2018

Restoration Status: This nearly new EMS Synthi A is in perfect working condition and KSR have already given it a ‘health-check’ in the last couple of days, so this instrument is ready for sale now.

We’re delighted to offer a rare chance to buy a recently manufactured EMS Synthi A that Robin Wood at EMS only assembled in October 2013 (we have a copy of the original receipt). This Synthi A has also been fully modified by EMS with a suite of upgrades (done at the time of manufacture). As many of you know, the waiting list to buy one of these exquisite machines from Robin has been running at around 12 years, but we spoke to him recently and he confirmed that production is now finishing due to the Spartanite cases no longer being available.

This late 2013 model (serial number 45643) sounds identical & works the same way a vintage Synthi does, plus it has all the advantages of being a nearly new machine! It’s immaculate as you would expect and works flawlessly. This instrument has only had 2 owners since 2013, this first only having it for a couple of months (unused) before emigrating and selling it to our client. Our client found it did not suit their own style of music, so it’s barely had any use at all so it needs to find a new home.

A note of the EMS implemented Mods:
Oscillator Synth on Osc2
Voltage Controlled Shape Osc1 & Osc2
Filter mode switchable 18/24 db/oct
Filter ‘unslew’ switchable on filters CV
Buffered external gate input

Included in the sale (pictured below):
Original EMS Synthi User Manual
Proprietary EMS power-cable
Full set of Matrix Pins
2 x Matrix pin-to-3.5mm cables
Cinch-Jones-to-3.5mm loom

This instrument operates on EU 220V. The instrument is sold with a 3-month warranty from RL Music.

Price: £7990 GBP.

Availability: This Synthi A is now SOLD on reserve as at 28th March 2018.

EMS Synthi AKS

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock:  23rd January 2017.

Servicing Status: Full restoration by KSR has already been carried out in February 2017, so this Synthi AKS is ready for sale now.

Remarks: A fabulous opportunity to own your EMS Synthi AKS, and very early model is excellent condition.

We checked the serial number to get the the manufacturing date with EMS, and Robin Wood confirmed the Synthi AKS was made in December 1972.

At some time the past, the Keyboard-Sequencer unit was modified with the vents you can see in the pictures. We did ask EMS about this and Robin said this was not a factory mod, but he acknowledged that the voltage regulators that sit under these vents do get quite warm in operation. The owner honestly can’t remember having this modification done, but it looks okay actually, and obviously does not effect the operation in any way.

These iconic and truly amazing pure analogue music instruments are in great demand by professional users, and prices are being driven up fast on the second-hand market around the world, so now might be a good time to invest in one before they become ‘Vintage Buchla or RA Moog Modular’ prices.

This EMS Synthi AKS did come from the owner with a partial set of worn Matrix pins, which we have used to picture it with, but the pins are in need to replacing to ensure a reliable contact within the matrix panel, so we have purchased a brand new set from EMS which will be supplied with the instrument, and are included in the sales price below.

As this Synthi AKS is 45 years old, and did not have any significant service history, we asked KSR to carry out an extensive ground-up restoration to bring it back to its former glory, whilst ensuring its authenticity is preserved as much as possible. Electronic instruments of this age need a deep level of restoration, but we approach this kind of work sympathetically.

The restoration time & resources invested into this instrument by KSR include:

>Strip-down of panels & Spartanite case.
>Spartanite case deep-cleaned & all hardware cleaned.
>Control Panels deep-cleaned (vary carefully).
>Every control component (potentiometers/switches/matrix panel), cleaned & lubricated
>All three Vernier dials replaced (EMS supplied parts) but original potentiometers retained.
>Power-Supply re-capped & calibrated.
>Brand new Matrix Pin set (from EMS).
>Full system-wide calibration, test & soak-test.

Inevitably, there are some parts that will needed replacement (mostly ageing capacitors). We always work alongside EMS technical guidelines to ensure we can keep the authenticity of these 45+ year old synths intact, so no components that would effect the sound will be changed unless we absolutely have too, and even then, we will only source NOS parts from the same production era.

The above restoration work is the minimum we asked KSR to carry out on the Synthi AKS, but In addition to the above, the following work can also be carried out by request. This is a costed option, so is additional to the sales prices listed at the bottom of this page:

*VCO stabilisation modification implemented in line with EMS guidelines = £400 GBP

This Synthi AKS operates on EU 220V or US 110V (switchable) – it will be sold with a 3 month warranty. Aside the new set of Matrix Pins included, the original Cinch-Jones Synthi-to-KS cable is also included with the instrument.

Sales Price: £12,500 GBP.

Availability: This Synthi AKS is now SOLD as at 21st March 2017.

Korg MS20 (vintage)

We are Brokering this instrument for and on behalf of our UK customer

Came into stock: 12th Aug 2016

Restoration Status: KSR to fully service once sold, and prior to shipping to the new owner.

Remarks: With all the variety of Korg MS20 now available it’s easy to get confused about which is the one to have, but the fact remains that the original 1970s MS20 is still the ‘real deal’ and a much coveted full sized semi-modular system with true vintage authenticity. The pleasure of owning an original/vintage analogue synthesizer can’t be understated just because Korg reissued it, but all the new MS20 variants have certainly fired up everyone’s imagination, which has to be a good thing for analogue fans.

Second hand prices for the ‘vintage Korg MS20’ had seen a reduction in the last couple of years, but we are starting to see a strong recovery for the vintage originals, so now is the time to consider buying one, especially a really nice one!

This example we are Brokering is a stunning condition example, which was imported from its homeland in Japan, so operates on 100~110V, and importantly, has the original Korg 35 filter IC. There have been no modifications to this synth, and as you can see from the pictures, it’s in museum/collector grade condition.

As with all Brokered Sales, the Korg MS20 will be fully serviced post-sale before it’s sent to its new owner. We do this to ensure that the instrument leaves us in perfect operational condition, and it is backed up by our full warranty to give the new owner complete peace of mind. The servicing is carried out as a priority once the the sale has been completed, and although it will delay shipping/delivery by a short time, we know from experience that customers are happy to wait.

VCS3 Mk1 & DK2

We are Brokering this vintage EMS VCS3 Mk1 & DK2 for and on their behalf of our UK customer.

Restoration Status: Restoration is now complete on both instruments (Nov 2015) by our RL Music Service Partner – KSR (Kent Spong Restorations), so both items are ready for sale & shipping now!

Remarks: So how about owning an early 1970s Mk1 Putney – one of the most sought after synthesizers in the world, we very rarely have these in stock, and having a 43+ year old historic music instrument in our possession is always an honour and privilege.

This iconic, and historically important, synthesizer comes from a time when the whole concept of electronic music instruments was in its infancy. This VCS3 would have been made around the time that the first Minimoog appeared to the world, and only a few years after the first Moog modular was created for musicians…wonderous times indeed for electronic music.

Also, having the slightly later EMS DK2 Keyboard Controller is a real bonus as some players like having the option of a more traditional playing style whilst using the VCS3, as well as having the natural hard-core experimental nature of the synth via drones & the joy-stick useage etc. So the VCS3 certainly benefits from accessing the synth via this keyboard, and it provides a complete package for anyone looking for the genuine article in terms of an true vintage EMS analogue controller, and a third VCO in fact (on board the DK2).

We are Brokering this vintage EMS system for our UK owner who had both instruments kept in his professional London studio for the best part of 30 years. The owner admitted that neither the VCS3 of DK2 has seen much use in production, so felt it was time now to let someone else enjoy using these amazing machines. Both the synth and keyboard were well taken care of during the last 3 decades, and upon early assessment from our restoration guru – Kent at KSR, he commented that the internals of the VCS3 “looked like new” & not 40 years old!

Although both the VCS3 Mk1 ‘Putney’ & DK2 had been very well looked after, we have asked KSR to carry out an extensive ground-up restoration to bring bring both items back to their former glory, whilst ensuring we preserved their authenticity at the same time. Electronic instruments of this age need a deep level of restoration, but we approach this kind of work sympathetically.

The time & resources invested into this instrument will include:

>Strip-down of every component, panels, cabinet
>Original wood cabinet to be stripped back to bare wood and re-finished by hand (preserved patina).
>Control Panels deep-cleaned (vary carefully).
>Every control component (potentiometers/switches/matrix panel) stripped, cleaned & lubricated
>Each original Matrix pin cleaned & tested.
>Power-Supply re-capped & distribution PCB upgraded, calibrated.
>Replacement chrome Cliff caps/inserts for some knobs.
>Brand new power cable.
>Full system-wide test & calibration.

The above restoration work is the minimum we are investing into the instruments.

In addition to the above, the following work can also be carried out by request. These are costed options, so are additional to the sales prices listed at the bottom of this page:

VCO stabilisation modification implemented in line with EMS guidelines = £400 GBP
A brand new (full) set of gold-plated matrix pins supplied (from EMS) = £240 GBP

Inevitably, there are some parts that have needed replacement (mostly ageing capacitors). We always work alongside EMS technical guidelines to ensure we can keep the authenticity of these 40+ year old synths intact, so no components that would effect the sound will be changed unless we absolutley have too, and even then, we will only source NOS parts from the same production era. Also, we will not replace the original cabinet, or get the panels repainted/screen-printed, so both instruments are going to be kept 100% original. The final presentation on both items (as you can see from the pictures below) is stunning, and offers an excellent investment if you have been looking for a ‘keeper’ for your own collection.

Price:

Mk1 VCS3 ‘The Putney’ and DK2 Keyboard Controller = £11,480 GBP

Arp 2600 & 3604...

We are Brokering this vintage Arp 2600 Tonus for and on behalf of our UK customer

We present the stunning and iconic early-1970s Arp 2600 semi-modular which contains the sought after (and so called) pre-lawsuit Moog 4012 style filter. This instrument is approaching 43 years old and just sounds absolutely amazing.

This very early Arp 2600 Tonus, with original 4012 Filter + 3604P Keyboard controller, features: Semi-normalised – 3 VCOs, 4 pole Lowpass VCF, VCA, Ring Modulator, 2 EGs, sample & hold Noise, Mic Preamp, Spring Reverb, Voltage Processor and Four Octave Keyboard….the list goes on

This beautiful instrument has been maintained meticulously over the last 15 years, with no expense spared in its upkeep. The Arp has been in regular use since the current owner purchased it from the USA in the 90s, so works perfectly, and is one of the finest all original examples we have ever seen having all the panels (paint & screen printing) in excellent condition.

We have already had our vintage synth restoration experts – KSR, fully service the Arp, and we asked them to improve the presentation of the cabinets of both the synth and keyboard by re-tolexing them all and fitting new nickel fixtures etc. The finished results are outstanding, with this beautiful synth now looking in top condition.

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the most icon vintage synths ever made, and the price has been agreed with our client to keep it very competitive, so even cheaper than any complete system you will find being sold privately anywhere in the world right now, and this is sold with a full warranty.

The original 3604P keyboard is useful, and is a historically correct partner for this model of 2600, but in reality offers limited access to the extensive inputs into the main synth, so to get the most out of the 2600 we would recommend using a multi-channel Midi to CV device like the Kenton Pro-2000…which we can supply but is not included in the price.

These unique synths have become very hard to find in even ‘average to poor’ condition these days, so here is a rare opportunity to own a superb fully professionally restored example that will only appreciate in value and add something special to your studio.

Supplied with all (restored) lids and cables (not pictured) & runs on US 110V. We can provide a step-down transformer for this free of charge if the eventual buyer is EU based.

Price: £6990 GBP.

Availability: This Arp 2600 Tonus is now SOLD as at 7th August 2015

Arp 2600 + 3604P

Status: This item is in stock

Restoration Status: Restoration has been completed and synth is available for sale now!

Remarks: Although these are not rare by some vintage synth standards, finding an Arp 2600 in anything approaching even good condition is a real challenge in 2014. This is why we invest such a lot of time, resources and money into getting them restored to the highest possible level that can be achieved – a FULL cosmetic and operational project restoration!

This Arp 2600 comes with a 3604P keyboard controller, original Arp power cable, keyboard-to-synth cable, and runs EU 220V. The actual version is a 2600P V3.0, manufactured between 1972 to 1974.

Original Arp Filter for this model (un-encapsulated) 4072
VCOs are original (encapsulated) Arp 4027-1
VCA is (encapsulated) 4019

The restoration work we invest into the Arp 2600 is extensive (what we term Total Restoration).  The work includes re-Tolexing the cabinets & lids, stripping the panels to bare metal and having them professionally repainted and screen-printed. We have all the sliders and sockets deep cleaned and the whole synth is electronically restored including the a PSU rebuild/re-cap etc. In addition, we have fitted a brand new 17 inch Acutronics Reverb Tank, and a full set of brand new slider caps.

This RL Music prepared Arp 2600 is over 40 years old, and is in ‘as-new’ condition.  On average we spend around £2800 GBP just in restoration costs for these models (synth & keys), so there is no equivalent in terms of quality offered by any person, or business, in the world. If you have been looking to own the ‘perfect’ Arp 2600 then look no further. These highly pro-restored examples are all sold with a full 6 months warranty.

Price: £8500 GBP.

EMS SYNTHI AKS

Came into stock: 1st December 2013

Restoration Status: Being restored by KSR.

ETR (estimated time from restoration): End of February 2014.

This example is in absolutely immaculate cosmetic condition and completely unmodified. The whole synth is being stripped and rebuilt by KSR, with every operational aspect of the AKS being addressed as part of the detailed restoration work.

These models are becoming extremely hard to source anywhere in the world, and combined with the demand by professional users, the ‘global market’ prices are being driven up fast so now might be a good time to invest in one before they become ‘Vintage Buchla or Moog Modular’ prices.

This Synthi AKS has a full compliment of Matrix pins and operates on EU 220V.

Guide Price Post-Restoration: £10,500 UK Pounds.

Availability: This Synthi AKS is now SOLD as at 6th January 2013.

Korg MS20

This is for an original Korg MS20 (vintage) from the late 1970s.

With all the interest with the new Korg MS20 Mini it’d easy to get caught up in all the excitement, but the fact remains that the original MS20 is still the ‘real deal’ and a much coveted full sized semi-modular system with true vintage authenticity. The pleasure of owning an original/vintage analogue synthesizer can’t be understated just because a new boy is on the block from Korg, and this new mini-synth has certainly fired up everyone’s imagination, which has to be a good thing for analogue fans.

The other good news is that second hand prices for the ‘vintage Korg MS20’ have seen a reduction in the last year or so, so we were also able to source this really super condition example for a reasonable price.

So now is a good time to get hold of an original MS20, and we have this really beautiful condition example for sale.

The excellent cosmetic condition suggests only ever light home use during it’s life over the last 30+ years. KSR have just fully restored the synth, which is quite a big job on these models and requires the whole synth to be disassembled and rebuilt. There’s a lot done: every potentiometer, knob and jack-socket is deep cleaned, the PSU is re-capped, key-bed overhauled and a system-wide calibration carried out etc.

This particular machine runs 110V, but the synth will be supplied with a brand new step-down transformer if sold within the EU. Also, the MS20 sold with a full 3 month warranty.

Price: £1190 GBP.

Availability: This Korg MS20 is now SOLD as at 10th September 2013

Korg PS3200

Came into stock: 28th February 2013

Restoration Status: KSR & other RL Music Service Partners now undertaking full restoration.

ETR (estimated time from restoration): Should be ready by August 2013

Remarks: It’s a real privilege to own this wonderful and rare 1970s vintage analogue Korg PS3200 polysynth, and we’re very happy to be able to offer such an amazing instrument for sale.

The PS3200 is a fully polyphonic, 16 memory semi-modular system incorporating divide-down technology driving 2 VCO’s and micro tuning ability. The technical specification aside, this instrument defines the word “ambient” and has the most wonderful warm, rich and charecterful sound that any vintage polysynth can deliver….a truly unique machine.

This PS3200 has very recently been extensively operationally overhauled so is in perfect working condition but KSR will fastidiously go over the whole machine for us as it’s being stripped down and rebuilt. Due to it’s age and wear, we are having the panels re-finished on this which includes re-spraing and re-screen printing etc. In addition, we are commissioning Lamond Design to build a new sold Walnut Cabinet (renewable resourced) for the synth and keyboard. This level of restoration is a significant investment in time and resources but for such a rare and historically important synth it’s worth the effort and expense. Once the restoration is complete this will without doubt be the best condition PS3200 in the world.

We have also purchased a brand new Kenton MIDI retrofit Kit for this PS3200 which will be fitted as part of the overall restoration work, so this instrument is sold with MIDI functionality.

The picture supplied below is from an earlier PS3200 we restored & sold, but we anticipate this next one to be as beautiful as this example.

Guide Price Post-Restoration: Guide price (post-restoration) will be £9390 UK pounds.

Availability: This Korg PS3200 is now SOLD as at 7th October 2013.
